Mobile Computer Music for Percussionists

Martin, Charles January 2012 (has links)
This thesis traces the development of a number of mobile computer music systems and their use in ensemble percussion performances. The research is motivated by the challenges of working with laptop based computer music systems in ensemble situations. The aims were to develop elegant, portable, and flexible computer music tools, to make these tools accessible to other percussionists, and to discover the opportunities that they enable in performance practice. These aims have been explored through three musical projects for percussion and Apple's iOS devices: Nordlig Vinter, a suite of duo compositions; and two collaborative works, 3p3p and Snow Music developed together with two other percussionists.Articulated from a performer's perspective, this artistic research examines a number of software frameworks for developing mobile computer music applications. The development, rehearsal process and performances of the musical projects have been documented with video and audio recordings. An ethnographic investigation of this data has given insight into the limitations and affordances of mobile computer music devices in a variety of performance contexts. All of the projects implemented elegant computer music setups and the limited visual interfaces of the mobile devices demanded simple but clear interface design. In Snow Music in particular, "percussive" interaction with the mobile devices along with an improvised performance practice contributed to a collaborative development cycle. This process revealed some of the limits of expression with the computer sounds used and led to a very successful series of performance outcomes. /
Validerat; 20120614 (anonymous)

Design and analysis of a compact two phase cooling system for a laptop computer

Ali, Adya Alisha 13 July 2004 (has links)
Technological advancement, as well as consumer demands, has motivated the miniaturization of electronic/mechanical systems and increase of device power and performance. The notebook computer is not an exception, and innovative thermal management solutions must be employed to compensate for the increased heat dissipation in the space-constrained enclosures. The majority of current cooling systems in laptop computers rely on heat pipes attached to a remote heat exchanger with micro-fans providing forced convection to reject heat to the ambient, however this technique can not accommodate the increasing heat fluxes in the confined laptop enclosure. In this study, a two-phase closed loop cooling system is designed and tested for a laptop computer. The cooling system consists of an evaporator structure containing boiling structures connected to a compact condenser with mini fans providing external forced convection. A pump is also incorporated to assist the return of the condensate back to the evaporator. The cooling system is characterized by a parametric study which determines the effects of volume fill ratio of coolant, initial system pressure, and pump flow rate on the thermal performance of the closed loop. Experimental data shows the optimum parametric values which can dissipate 25 W of chip power with a chip temperature maintained at 95C. Numerical analysis provides additional data to further enhance the heat dissipation from the external air-cooled side of the condenser by studying the effects of ventilation and air flow rate across the system. Thermal management of mobile systems must be considered during the early design phases, and this research shows the feasibility of implementing of a two-phase cooling system to dissipate 25 W in a laptop computer.

Impact of Webpage Access on the Design of Single-Chip Heterogeneous Multiprocessors

Somers, Marc Steven 25 May 2007 (has links)
Mobile devices are currently designed similar to embedded systems where performance is derived from a specification that allows the device to interact in a periodic manner with the environment. However, as mobile devices increasingly interact with the Internet they exhibit a different style of computing that does not fit the embedded system model. At the same time, a mobile device designer needs to consider many different issues such as the number and types of processors, scheduling strategies, applications, power consumption, and dimensions of the device, which increase the total number of design decisions at an alarming rate. This research shows that by using a more realistic model of mobile devices using webpage-based benchmarks, customization can allow specialized architectures to improve performance up to 70 percent over a homogeneous multiprocessor composed of general purpose processors and 25 percent additional improvement over the next best architecture when individual user preferences were also considered. Webpage access, to include user profiling for individual utilization, is clearly a significant factor in the design of mobile devices — and thus should be included in future benchmarks based upon webpage content and webpage access patterns. When new evaluation techniques are developed, new design strategies can be discovered and employed. / Master of Science

This work aimed to analyze the Mobile Computer Room (SIM – Sala de Informática Móvel) project that was established as a pilot study in 2011 in three schools from the Municipal Education Schools of Belo Horizonte (RME-BH), in order to understand the process of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) integration in teachers’ practicing. The work was developed at the Professional Post-graduate Program in Management and Public Education Evaluation of the Public Policy and Education Evaluation Center from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora,. The SIM project consisted of a wireless network infrastructure installing and the use of mobile computers that enabled the use of such equipments in a classroom or at other school sites. The project was designed to enable schools with not enough physical space to have access to computer room resources. The survey adopted a qualitative methodology, and the data collection involved a documentary analysis of two reports designed in the years of 2011 and 2013, for project monitoring purposes. It also provided questionnaires to teachers and interviews with managers. Data analysis showed that teachers yearn for innovative methods to use in their classes development and hope to integrate ICT into their practicing; however, they do not feel prepared. There was a lack of support by the ones responsible for the schools management team, that seem not to be clear about how to have a meaningful use of the ICT. This shows that there is a need for a closer monitoring from the municipal office and the regional education managers in the schools, and it also should offer a continuing education program that would take into account, besides specific aspects of the pedagogical use of ICT, the SIM specificities, in order to ensure that computing resources provided by this project would be integrated into teachers practicing inside classroom. In order to soften and, perhaps, solve the highlighted problems, an Educational Action Plan was proposed, consisting of the following: teachers and administrators training; experience sharing environment for all RME-BH teachers and managers; an ICT pedagogical use annual seminar within education.

Digital organizing of brief notes and schedules : supporting the collaboration between paper and digital artifacts

Kruse, Anna, Åström, Mirja January 2001 (has links)
Living in a time where mobility and wireless information are of great interest when developing new computer artifacts, but paper and pen, which are the most used artifacts of today for taking brief notes and scheduling, are easy not to consider even though we have seen that they are very mobile. In this report we are discussing the use of both paper and mobile computer artifacts and their properties to see where mobile computer artifacts can support or replace paper artifacts in connection to brief notes and schedules. We believe that the work toward a design is just as important as the design it self, which is why this report also includes the methods and the results from it. Our research question is how different designs affect the possibilities of taking notes, planning and also what paper artifacts mediate to you, which digital do not do today. The question resulted in ideas of how the properties of paper and digital artifacts should be considered in the developing of computer artifacts for taking brief notes and scheduling, design ideas and a mock-up of our Digital Interactive Organizer.
