A UML Extension for the Model-driven Specification of Audit Rules

In recent years, a number of laws and regulations (such as the Basel II accord or SOX) demand that organizations record certain activities or decisions to fulfill legally enforced reporting duties. Most of these regulations have a direct impact on the information systems that support an organization's business processes. Therefore, the definition of audit requirements at the modeling-level is an important prerequisite for the thorough implementation and enforcement of corresponding policies in a software system. In this paper, we present a UML extension for the specification of audit properties. The extension is generic and can be applied to a wide variety of UML elements. In a model-driven development (MDD) approach, our extension can be used to generate corresponding audit rules via model transformations. (author's abstract)

Juvenile Delinquency in Five High Schools in Shenyang, China: An Empirical Analysis under an Integrated Model

Youth crime has been increasing rapidly since the Economy Reform and Open-door Policy in 1979 and become a serious social problem in China. Researches on explanations of juvenile delinquency, however, are relatively limited, while a number of scholars in western countries have developed delicate theoretical models to explore this problem. General strain, differential association, and social bond theory are employed in the current study to test if western theories can be applied to a different social context and to empirically explain the causes of youth crime in China. An integrated model is addressed through a self-reported survey with 385 respondents. The respondents are high school students in the city of Shenyang, aged from 16 to 18. Data from the questionnaire survey suggests that these three theories could explain Chinese youth crime. Two separate Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models are built for analyzing delinquency of males and females. Predictors related to strain and differential association theory are directly associated with youth crime, while weak social bonds have indirect impacts on juvenile delinquency. Males and females are influenced by different factors when they are involved in delinquency. The thesis concludes with a discussion of establishing a theoretical integrated model for Chinese adolescence and provides policy implications for protection programs.

Development and application of new constitutive models to simulate the hydraulic-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated swelling clay

Unsaturated swelling clays are used in engineered barriers for waste disposal facilities due to their self-sealing ability and low hydraulic conductivity. The characterization of unsaturated clay behaviour is required for design of these barriers. In recent years, several small-scale laboratory and full-scale field tests have been conducted to characterize the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of the unsaturated swelling clay. This focus of the present study is towards the development of constitutive models to simulate hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of precompacted unsaturated swelling clay, called the bentonite-sand buffer (BSB) material. Development, calibration, implementation, and application of the proposed constitutive models form the scope of the study. The results of laboratory triaxial tests with controlled suction and suction measurements are used to calibrate the constitutive models presented. An algorithm, called the PEM (Parameter Evaluation Method), which is useful to estimate constitutive model parameters and evaluate the performance of constitutive models is proposed. This algorithm has been used to estimate the parameters of two elasto-plastic constitutive models (i.e., the BBM (Alonso et al. 1990) and the BGM (Blatz and Graham 2003)) based on the laboratory tests results on the BSB material. New 3-dimensional porosity-dependent permeability model (kwn) and water retention surface (WRS) are developed in this study. The mathematical formulations of these models using parameters calibrated with laboratory tests conducted on the BSB material are provided. Implementation algorithms of the BBM, the BGM, the kwn, and the WRS in 2-phase flow hydraulic-mechanical (H-M) analysis using a 2D-finite difference method are also provided . Three combinations of hydraulic and mechanical constitutive models (linear elastic model, BGM, vanGenuchten (1980) and kwn models) are used to simulate small-scale infiltration processes in the BSB material. Two types of tests, constant volume (CV) and constant mean stress (CMS) tests are simulated using 2D-finite difference H-M analysis. The full-scale isothermal test (ITT) of AECL is modelled using 3 combinations of H-M constitutive models. The ITT experiment comprises of buffer, rock, and concrete materials. The selected combinations of H-M constitutive models are used in three types of analyses: buffer-only (BO); buffer-rock with 20x30m domain (BR); and time-dependent boundary conditions (BCt). The results of the study show that the applications of the elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive models and porosity-dependent permeability (kwn) model are improvements over existing constitutive models to model this class of problem. The rock properties and applied boundary conditions are significant in modelling the ITT experiment. The application of the time-dependent boundary condition can reduce the uncertainty of the rock properties and boundary conditions within the rock, so that it improves the model ability to simulate the hydraulic-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated swelling clay. / October 2007

Predicting the Evolution of Influenza A

Vaccination against the Influenza A virus (IAV) is often an important and critical task for much of the population, as IAV causes yearly epidemics, and can cause even deadlier pandemics. Designing the vaccine requires an understanding of the current major circulating strains of Influenza, as well as an understanding of how those strains could change over time to become either less harmful or more deadly, or simply die out completely. An error in the prediction process can lead to a non-immunized population at risk of epidemics, or even a pandemic. Presented here is a posterior predictive approach to generate emerging influenza strains based on a realistic genomic model that incorporates natural features of viral evolution such as selection and recombination. Also introduced is a sequence sampling scheme to relieve the computational burden of the posterior predictive analysis by clustering sequences based on their pairwise similarity. Finally, the impact of “evolutionary accidents” that take the form of bursts of evolution and or of recombination on the predictive power of our procedure is tested. An analysis of the impact of these bursts is carried out in a retrospective study that focuses on the unexpected emergence of a new H3N2 strain in the 2007-08 influenza season. Measuring the R2 values of both pairwise and patristic distances, the model reaches a predictive power of ∼40%, but is not able to simulate the emergence of the target Brisbane/10/2007 sequence with a high probability. The inclusion of “evolutionary accidents” improved the algorithm’s ability to predict HA sequences, but the prediction power of the NA gene remained low.

Essays in housing and macroeconomy

Compared to the previous twenty years, residential investments in the US appear more stable after the mid-1980s. Chapter 2 explores key hypotheses regarding the underlying causes. In particular, it uses estimated DSGE models to examine whether a more responsive interest rate policy stabilizes the housing market by keeping inflation in check. These estimations indeed found a policy that has become more responsive over time. Counter-factual analysis confirms that the change stabilizes inflation as well as nominal interest rate. It does not, however, find the change in policy to have stabilizing effect on real economic activity including housing investment. It finds that smaller TFP shocks make modest contributions, while the biggest contributing factor to the fall in the housing volatility is a reduction in the sensitivity of the investment to demand variations. Chapter 3 constructs a richly specified model for the housing market to examine the empirical relevance of various costs and frictions, including the investment adjustment cost, sticky construction costs, search frictions, and sluggish adjustment of house prices. Using the US national-level quarterly data from 1985 and 2007, we find that the gradual adjustment of house prices is the most important and irreplaceable feature of the model. The key to developing an optimization-based empirical housing model, therefore, is to provide a structural interpretation for the slow adjustment in house prices. Chapter 4 uses US national-level time series of residential investment, price index of new houses, consumption and interest rate to explore whether the US, as a nation, experienced a drop in the price elasticity of supply of new housing. Maximum likelihood estimations with a simple stock-and-flow model found a statistically significant drop of the elasticity from 10 to 2.2, when the quarterly data between 1971 and 2007 are split at 1985. A richer model with mechanisms of gradual adjustment also indicates such a reduction, when existing knowledge about the adjustment parameters is incorporated in the analysis. For the Federal Reserve, an inelastic supply can be a source of concern, because policy-driven demand in housing market is more likely to trigger undesirable swings in prices.

Hydrodynamics of Balistiform swimming in the Picasso Triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus

Aquatic propulsion by means of undulatory movements of the median (dorsal and anal) fins is the primary mode of transport for the Picasso triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus). Known as balistiform locomotion, this form of propulsion is an adaptation for highly efficient movement within complex environments such as coral reefs. A principle component of balistiform locomotion has been the development of momentum enhancement, a fin-force multiplier that increases swimming efficiency. This study examines the kinematics and energetics of balistiform locomotion employing theoretical models of thrust, power, and efficiency. Thrust and power were calculated and compared with theoretical values modeled by Lighthill and Blake (1990). This model has heretofore not been thoroughly vetted and was tested for accuracy and applicability. Thrust force was estimated from resistance (drag) using a vertical dead drop to determine terminal velocity; power was calculated from oxygen consumption measurements at different speeds. The Lighthill and Blake (1990) model requires median fin kinematics (frequency, wavelength, amplitude, wave angle), which were measured from high-speed videography and followed statistically predicted trends with frequency being the dominant variable, and the others changing little or not at all with speed. Momentum enhancement was found to be 3.6, close to Lighthill and Blake’s (1990) theoretically predicted value of 2.5. Momentum enhancement is experimentally proven here for the first time. Theoretical and empirical thrust force values are closely matched; theoretical thrust is greater at lower speeds and lower at higher speeds. The ratio of theoretical thrust to drag-estimated thrust averages 1.08. Theoretical values for power are greater than those measured by a factor of about 3.6 and cannot be explained by measurement error.

Parameterized Code Generation From Template Semantics

We have developed a tool that can create a Java code generator for a behavioural modelling notation given only a description of the notation's semantics as a set of parameters. This description is based on template semantics, which has previously been used to describe a wide variety of notations. As a result, we have a technique for generating Java code for models written in any notation describable in template semantics. Since template semantics allows for models containing nondeterminism, we introduce mechanisms for eliminating this nondeterminism when generating code. We describe Java implementations of several template-semantics composition operators that have no natural Java representations and give some techniques for optimizing the generated code without sacrificing correctness. The efficiency of our generated code is comparable to that of commercial notation-specific code generators.
