Extension and practical evaluation of the spatial modulation concept

The spatial modulation (SM) concept combines, in a novel fashion, digital modulation and multiple antenna transmission for low complexity and spectrally efficient data transmission. The idea considers the transmit antenna array as a spatial constellation diagram with the transmit antennas as the constellation points. To this extent, SM maps a sequence of bits onto a signal constellation point and onto a spatial constellation point. The information is conveyed by detecting the transmitting antenna (the spatial constellation point) in addition to the signal constellation point. In this manner, inter-channel interference is avoided entirely since transmission is restricted to a single antenna at any transmission instance. However, encoding binary information in the spatial domain means that the number of transmit antennas must be a power of two. To address this constraint, fractional bit encoded spatial modulation (FBE—SM) is proposed. FBE–SMuses the theory of modulus conversion to facilitate fractional bit rates over time. In particular, it allows each transmitter to use an arbitrary number of transmit antennas. Furthermore, the application of SM in a multi-user, interference limited scenario has never been considered. To this extent, the average bit error rate (ABER) of SM is characterised in the interference limited scenario. The ABER performance is first analysed for the interference-unaware detector. An interference-aware detector is then proposed and compared with the cost and complexity equivalent detector for a single–input multiple–output (SIMO) system. The application of SM with an interference-aware detector results in coding gains for the system. Another area of interest involves using SM for relaying systems. The aptitude of SM to replace or supplement traditional relaying networks is analysed and its performance is compared with present solutions. The application of SM to a fixed relaying system, termed dual-hop spatial modulation (Dh-SM), is shown to have an advantage in terms of the source to destination ABER when compared to the classical decode and forward (DF) relaying scheme. In addition, the application of SM to a relaying system employing distributed relaying nodes is considered and its performance relative to Dh-SM is presented. While significant theoretical work has been done in analysing the performance of SM, the implementation of SM in a practical system has never been shown. In this thesis, the performance evaluation of SM in a practical testbed scenario is presented for the first time. To this extent, the empirical results validate the theoretical work presented in the literature.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This report discusses the theory, design, implementation and testing of a personal computer-based Multi-Frequency Modulation (MFM) packet communications system. Transmitter/receiver programs provide software drivers for D/A and A/D boards and perform symbol encoding, modulating, demodulating and decoding. The design and construction of a polarity coincidence correlator for receiver packet synchronization is presented. Experimental results show that the implemented MFM communication system conforms to theoretical analysis with acceptable bit error. [pt] Este trabalho é um estudo sobre o desempenho de um enlace típico do padrão UMTS/WCDMA para sistemas celulares de terceira geração, utilizando a técnica denominada modulação adaptativa. Esta técnica consiste em escolher, para cada quadro de bits transmitido, a modulação mais adequada às condições do canal. Os aspectos básicos do problema foram formulados analiticamente considerando a transmissão com modulações PSK e QAM coerentes em um canal com desvanecimento plano e efeito Doppler. Para considerar a aplicação a um modelo mais realista, foi desenvolvido um programa de simulação capaz de modelar esse mesmo problema considerando os principais componentes do sistema HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access), um sub-sistema do UMTS/WCDMA padronizado para transmissão de dados em alta velocidade no enlace de descida. O desempenho do enlace foi avaliado para diversas situações através da taxa de erro de bit, da taxa de transmissão média e da vazão obtida na transmissão, procurando-se investigar a influência de parâmetros do sistema nesse desempenho. / [en] This work is a study about the performance of a typical UMTS/WCDMA link for third generation mobile communications systems which uses the adaptive modulation technique. This technique consists of choosing, for each transmitted frame, the most efficient modulation according to the channel conditions. The basic aspects of the problem were analytically examined considering transmissions with PSK and QAM coherent techniques in a flat fading channel with Doppler effect. A simulator was developed in order to consider the application in a more realistic model. This simulator was capable of modeling this problem considering the main aspects of the HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) system, which is a subsystem of UMTS/WCDMA that is standardized for high-speed data transmission in the downlink. The link level performance was evaluated for many different situations through average transmission bit error rate and throughput, investigating the influence of the system parameters in this performance.

Evaluation of a poisson windowed test signal for pcm codecs

This project deals with the critical evaluation of a Poisson windowed test signal which was proposed for in-service and production testing of filtered pulse code modulation systems. The Poisson windowed test signal has various advantages over the existing two test methods specified by the International Consultive Committee for Telephone and Telegraph (CCITT). The main goals of the new test signal are to minimise the test time and to accommodate the send- and reel eve filters normally found in communication systems. The evaluation process included the compilation of performance curves of signal ,to noise ratio vs. signal level and gain variation vs. signal level. These curves were compiled by simulating the codec and filters on a digital computer and processing the output data. Three sets of programs were The results obtained revealed some fundamental limitations of the proposed test signal. Using the basic properties of the Poisson windowed signal, an alternative test signal was proposed. It was the single sided exponentially windowed sinusoidal which proved to be suitable for the testing of filtered pulse code modulation stems.

As Si MOS approaches its maximum limits in speed and bandwidth, new devices are desired to meet the needs of high speed communications and signal processing. A device that exhibits superior performance to Si MOS, BJT, and GaAs technology is the HEMT (high electron mobility transistor). The HEMT offers superior transconductance, mobility, speed, and noise performance compared to Si MOS, BJT, and standard GaAs technology. The high performance is a result of improved channel mobility due to a heterojunction. At the heterointerface, the majority carriers are confined to a very thin sheet forming what has been termed a 2DEG (two dimensional electron gas). The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the suitability of Honeywell's delta-doped self-aligned complimentary HIGFET process for the realization of high speed analog circuits. An operational amplifier and switched-capacitor circuit are presented. The operational amplifier has been fabricated at Honeywell and preliminary tests have been performed on the op-amp which are also presented. / Graduation date: 1998
