Jean Baptiste P. Moliére: Misantrop - kostýmní výprava / Jean Baptiste P. Moliére: The Misanthrope - costume design

Kopecká, Tereza January 2013 (has links)
The thesis deals with the complex solution of costumes of the theatre play The Misanthrope written by Moliére. The work is divided in two main parts: a theoretical study and a practical propose. The theoretical part examines the biography of Moliere, with my own insight into the cultural and historical background of the period. I tried to capture the essence of the playwright's inspiration and justify the form of his plays. This part is served mainly for my own understanding of Molière's life and work. Studing historical circumstances of the period helped me to better understand the play The Misanthrope. An important element during the research process was a field-trip to Paris. Working on Vladimir Mikes´s translation of the Misantrope, I paid attention to the detailed description the text. The second half of my work is devoted to the analysis of previous realizations of the play The Misanthrope in Czech Republic and abroad, thanks to which I explained my own concept of the play. These analyses are supported by illustrative photographs. In the practical part I justified my own choices of inspiration and the costumes, that were based on analysis of the dramatic characters. The second part also includes examples of costume´s drawings.

Moliere And Commedia Dell'arte:past, Present, And Future

Klass, Nicole 01 January 2006 (has links)
This thesis will explore the application of comemdia dell'arte technique to a contemporary performance. UCF's spring 2005 production of Molière's The Trickeries of Scapin will serve as a resource in both commedia dell'arte's ability to resonate with a modern audience as well as an analysis of the actor's process in fusing elements of commedia dell'arte and contemporary acting techniques. This document will include a thorough description of the history and origins of commedia dell'arte in order to decipher existing elements today. Also included, will be major influences on commedia dell'arte including Greek and Roman Comedy. It is important to discuss Roman comedic playwrights Plautus and Terence as two major influences on both the style of commedia dell'arte as well as major influences on Molière and his writing. A description of both playwrights previously mentioned will be given as means to explore the similarities between the two playwrights and Molière, specifically the similarities of Terence's Phormio and Molière's The Trickeries of Scapin. In addition to exploring the history behind commedia dell'arte and Molière, this thesis will include the rehearsal process of creating a contemporary version of Molière's Zerbinette. The application of the previous two years of graduate work including studies of Laban, Linklater, and Cicely Berry will be used in creating Zerbinette's vocal and physical life in a contemporary fashion, while maintaining certain elements of the commedia dell'arte style. In concluding this thesis, the evolution of commedia dell'arte will be discussed, and how it is in existence today. Just as commedia dell'arte evolved in the seventeenth century from previous art forms, it has never stopped evolving, constantly being influenced by every generation. From Greek Comedy playwrights' such as MeNander, to Roman comedic playwrights such as Plautus and Terence, to farcical and satirist Molière, commedia dell'arte does exist today, and will be examined throughout this thesis project.

Directing Tartuffe or why people should see this show today?

Delpech, Emmanuelle Francoise January 2011 (has links)
This thesis documents a production of the French playwright Moliere's comedy Tartuffe at Temple Repertory Theater in Philadelphia. Set in Philadelphia's Main Line, this production provides an updated version of the play that comments on religion in contemporary America. Tartuffe is one of the best comedies written by Moliere. Banned for many years, it deranged people and touched a very tender spot in 17th century French society. America has a very different approach to religion than France. The many churches in existence make this country a deist democracy as opposed to the French secular state. The use of religion in politics, the "in God we trust" on the dollar bill, and seeing people pray in restaurants before their dinner have dictated this production be set in contemporary America. The use of clown techniques helped in finding American archetypes that would fit the characters. Directing choices, designers and actors created a world that tells the story of a rich American family threatened by the extremist religious discourse of a hypocrite. All these choices try to honor the heightened style of Moliere's language and, here, of Ranjit Bolt's very modern and fluid translation. / Theater

Isley, Edwin L. January 1987 (has links)
Critical studies on the comic drama of the seventeenth-century French playwright, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin de Moliere (1622-1673), center attention on biography, production, stylistics, and thematic development. Because of the diversity of themes, and because of the considerable productivity of this dramatist, the analyses of the style and substance of these comedies have often been focused on the use of themes or techniques employed in a single comedy or associated with one single sort of comedy. This thesis, "Farce, critique sociale, et ccm6die morale chez Moliere," proposes to deepen, in two ways, our appreciation of Moliere's combined use of themes and techniques that, in turn, create three sorts of comic modes. First, through a close reading of three of Moliere's major plays (Le medecin malgre lul, Les Precieuses ridicules, and Misanthrope), this thesis attempts to describe the techniques that develop and elucidate a particular comic focus, and thereby enhances our awareness of Moliere's recognition of the necessary relationship between theme and technique in the creation of comedy. The description of this use of comic techniques and the subsequent development of themes encourage classification of these representative plays into three sorts: farce, social comedy, and moral comedy. Such a classification thus expands the narrow perspective of criticism, and encourages a study of the necessary relationship between theme and technique and, perhaps, will suggest future study of the development of Moliere's comic artistry. / Department of Foreign Languages

Pérez Vera, Jaime January 2013 (has links)

Rimbaud, Molière and Sade. These are the three french writers honored, respectively, by Leandro Konder, Rubem Fonseca and Bernardo Carvalho, at the collection Literatura ou morte (2000 published by Companhia das Letras. The idea of the collection would have appeared when Leandro Konder submitted to his publisher the original novel A morte de Rimbaud, in that in addition to quote the french poet in the title, includes references to french literature. Enthusiastic with the result, the publisher Luis Schwarcz contacted several writers to create novels that follow the same model of A morte de Rimbaud, serving two fundamental assumptions: that they were crime novels and involved the name of an established writer by critics and the public, now deceased. Between the seven volumes that followed the proposal are O doente Molière and Medo de Sade. In constructing these novels his authors were brought to revisit the biographies and works of each of the honored writers, providing readings and new meanings to them. The goal of our work is to investigate the reasons Konder, Carvalho and Fonseca to choose the theme of his literary works precisely these three writers, and demonstrated that these choices was not arbitrary, but directed by the publisher, which besides promoting with the reference to the names of classical writers, sets before itself a new group of readers. The collection allows its writers follow two narratives proposals at the same time, it is characterized both as an entertainment literature, marked by the choice of form, crime novel, and biography, and a proposal literature, marked by the theme, which are the classical writers works. These are novels written for both the reader who search a traveling hobby, as to the academic who seeks the references and allusions to other writers. In addition, we aimed to draw a reading that considers the three works together, this perspective that glimpse the formation of a historical-literary...
