Simulations of stray radiation in the European XFEL undulators with the Geant4 toolkit

The European XFEL is an X-ray free electron laser research facility that generates ultrashort, high intensity flashes. Three SASE undulator systems are made of undulator segments and intersection components. Permanent magnets that form the segments, may potentially suffer demagnetization due to the stray radiation that comes from the interaction between electrons and the beam pipe. A gamma spectrometer (GR1-A, developed by Kromek) is planned to be placed at the entrance of one of the undulator segments of SASE1. Monte Carlo simulations, using Geant4, have been performed to study gamma radiation flux at possible measurement areas. The results show that in some cells the expected flux is larger than the maximum throughput, while for two segments there are areas which satisfy the limitations of the detector. An improvement of the geometry of the Geant4 code has also been done to make simulations more in line with the real systems. A comparison between dose results from the new and the former code shows that components placed at the intersections have a significant impact on dose distributions, especially quadrupole magnets.

Multiple Scattering Of Light In Inhomogeneous Media And Applications

Light scattering-based techniques are being developed for non-invasive diagnostics of inhomogeneous media in various fields, such as medicine, biology, and material characterization. However, as most media of interest are highly scattering and have a complex structure, it is difficult to obtain a full analytical solution of the scattering problem without introducing approximations and assumptions about the properties of the system under consideration. Moreover, most of the previous studies deal with idealized scattering situations, rarely encountered in practice. This dissertation provides new analytical, numerical, and experimental solutions to describe subtle effects introduced by the properties of the light sources, and by the boundaries, absorption and morphology of the investigated media. A novel Monte Carlo simulation was developed to describe the statistics of partially coherent beams after propagation through inhomogeneous media. The Monte Carlo approach also enabled us to study the influence of the refractive index contrast on the diffusive processes, to discern between different effects of absorption in multiple scattering, and to support experimental results on inhomogeneous media with complex morphology. A detailed description of chromatic effects in scattering was used to develop new models that explain the spectral dependence of the detected signal in applications such as imaging and diffuse reflectance measurements. The quantitative and non-invasive characterization of inhomogeneous media with complex structures, such as porous membranes, diffusive coatings, and incipient lesions in natural teeth was then demonstrated.

Lane Preference in a Simple Traffic Model

We examine the effect of lane preference on a quasi one-dimensional three-state driven lattice gas, consisting of holes and positive and negative particles, and periodic boundary conditions in the longitudinal direction. Particles move via particle-hole and, with a lesser rate, particle-particle exchanges; the species are driven in opposite directions along the lattice, each preferring one of the lanes with a given probability, <I>p</I>. The model can be interpreted as traffic flow on a two-lane beltway, with fast cars preferring the left lane and slow cars preferring the right, viewed in a comoving frame. In steady-sate, the system typically exhibits a macroscopic cluster containing a majority of the particles. At very high values of <I>p</I>, a first order transition takes the system to a spatially disordered state. Using Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the system, we find that the size of the cluster increases with lane preference. We also observe a region of negative response, where increasing the lane preference <I>decreases</I> the number of particles in their favored lane, against all expectations. In addition, simulations show an intriguing sequence of density profiles for the two species. We apply mean-field theory, continuity equations, and symmetries to derive relationships between observables to make a number of predictions verified by the Monte Carlo data. / Master of Science
