A writer may choose many points of view in considering works of art. Frequently the work of an artist is regarded purely for its own merit. Or it may be considered in relation to the work of other artists or periods. Here, the writer has chosen to consider certain sculptural works of the English artist Henry Moore in relation to the cityscape and landscape settings in which they have been placed. In order to more fully understand the works, how they relate or do not relate to their settings and what effects the settings have upon them, the thesis has been broken into several major sections which in turn have been further divided. A section dealing with Henry Moore as a man and an artist, the pattern of development which his work has taken, and a clarification of the meaning of his work is placed first in order that the reader may more fully understand the specific pieces when they are considered. This section is followed by a chapter devoted to a generalized discussion of the development of sculpture from earliest times to the present day and its various uses within cities and landscape both in the past and in the 20th century. Continuing the thesis, a number of Henry Moore's major works are discussed. The pieces are considered for their significance within the 'oeuvre' of Moore. They are also considered for their function in relationship to their setting -- cityscape or landscape. Certain of Moore's bronzes have been placed in both landscape and cityscape locations and in these cases it has been possible to consider the relative impact of the works within each type of setting. The pieces are not discussed in chronological order, but rather in the order which best suits both the subject and its setting. Those sculptures which have as their setting, the city, have been discussed first as it is in this environment that sculpture is most frequently found. Several of the pieces have both landscape and cityscape sites and thus provide the transition to the setting of pure natural landscape in which are placed other works of sculptor Henry Moore. Finally, a number of works having the exhibition space in the museum or gallery as their setting are given consideration. In a few cases the pieces are not permanently located. The aim of this thesis is to examine the trailblazing work of C.L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry in light of themes of queerness, gender, and female masculinity, which has seldom been analyzed. In this thesis, I will juxtapose Moore’s work with other contemporaries like Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Éowyn to highlight Moore’s trailblazing gendered portrayal. This thesis utilizes Judith Butler’s Undoing Gender and Jack Halberstam’s Female Masculinity as lenses to codify the uniquely gendered portrayal that Moore has left for us to interpret. This thesis examines the issue of depicting reality and truth in contemporary documentary. Documentaries are often considered to be a mirror to the real world, but this is not always the case. Filmmakers can manipulate their work in a manner that changes the story to be more interesting for viewers. This thesis introduces a documentary discourse, provides contexts of documentary history in the 20th Century and looks more closely at issues of depicting reality and truth. This is shown through textual and visual analysis of chosen contemporary documentaries made by Errol Morris and Michael Moore.

Persuasion in poetry, according to Marianne Moore, is the result of three attributes, humility, concentration, and gusto, and when a poet is aware of these attributes and incorporates each one into his / her poetry, the poem is more likely to be meaningful. In fact, Moore’s theory stands as a meaningful test to any poet regardless of aesthetic preference. Therefore, in order to argue that the combination of these three concepts work together to produce persuasive poetry, I will show how all three of Moore’s tenets—humility, concentration, and gusto—are present in the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop as well as in the most emotionally convincing poems of confessional poet Anne Sexton and associative free verse poet Mary Ruefle. In addition, I will discuss how Moore’s aesthetics apply to my own work.

This thesis concerns the practice of ‘psychogeography’ in London, England, and the ways in which psychogeographic writings provoke in city-dwellers an acute sense of disorientation, as though the everyday were otherworldly. My study is intended as a response to Guy Debord’s claim that ‘psychogeography’ investigates “the precise laws […] of the geographical environment” on “the emotions and behaviour of individuals” (Debord qtd. in Coverley 88): any revolutionary enterprise must point to the future, the very notion of which can only be imprecise and un-empirical – psychogeography is not necessarily an exception. I argue that for Alan Moore and Iain Sinclair, the psychogeographic imperative is rather to imagine the implosion of Londonscape as it is well known, since only spatial structures that thus unravel may offer mystical insights that are, as yet, unspoiled by neoliberal/Thatcherite politics and the accompanying ambition to re-vamp English history in a nostalgic light. This study presents psychogeography not simply as a strategy of political resistance but as a visceral and metaphysical experience; it draws upon SF theories of worlding and the philosophical notion of Dasein to address some concerns that have arisen in post-imperial Britain, such as the desire to define English identity, i.e., ‘Englishness.’ / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This dissertation studies Alan Moore’s and Iain Sinclair’s use of psychogeography to examine the city of London. Psychogeography is an implosive, fragmented writing style that estranges the meaning of the urban everyday. Subject to psychogeographic depiction, London becomes a city altogether foreign, if not to say fantastical. I argue that psychogeography is both a strategy of political resistance and a visceral experience – one that could influence common ways of reading English history and culture (i.e. ‘Englishness.’)

In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the duel of honor functioned as a formal recourse to attacks on a gentleman's reputation. Concurrently, many notable literary figures such as Samuel Johnson, William Gifford, Thomas Moore, and Lord Byron were involved in literary disputes featuring duels or the threat of physical violence, a pattern indicating a connection between authorship and dueling. This study explicitly examines this connection, particularly as it relates to social acceptance, the gentrification of authorship, and the business of publishing. The act of publishing, putting one's work into the public sphere for consumption as well as critique, created an acute sensitivity to issues of honor because publishing automatically broadcast insults or accusations of dishonorable conduct to the reading public. This study requires a grounded discussion of complex, interconnected concepts, specifically: masculine identity, social hierarchy, and violence; satire; dueling; and authorship. Discussion moves from a foundational concern with violence and the assertion of social status, to the relationship between status and honor, to specific modes of defending honor, and finally to the attempt to establish authorship as an honorable profession. Although each of these quarrels exhibits physical violence or the threat of physical violence, these examples also exhibit verbal violence through satiric assaults or an exchange of verbal attacks and parries. As professional writers struggled to overcome the stereotype of the literary hack and gain social respectability, dueling, with either lead or paper bullets, became a way for authors to defend and maintain the fragile social status they had gained. / Master of Arts

The specific purposes of this investigation, therefore, are (1) to determine any general pattern in the development of different phases of personnel programs in different firms; and (2) to make an intensive case study of the development of the personnel program in one organization--Moore Business Forms, Incorporated--which might serve as a guide for similar studies in other firms.

Alan Moore's graphic novels mark a shift in the way graphic novels are read, written, and studied. This thesis explores what makes his novels compelling and see what examples of postmodern thought occur in Moore's construction of human sexuality and modem culture. Additionally, it examines graphic structures to see how pictures and words impact every level of the text. It investigates three of his more established novels: From Hell, Lost Girls and Watchmen. Secondary sources come from a diverse background of philosophical, literary, psychological, and artistic theory. This study implements these sources to decipher Moore's work by finding similar moments in the different texts and construct a possible model for the postmodern graphic novel and argues that Moore should be considered one of the major contributors and innovators to the medium of graphic novels.

The developed website comparison with others universities and institutes scientific journal websites was made. There was also made a comparison with foreign scientific journal websites. Thesis reviews search algorithms that are used in MySQL databases. The B tree search algorithm, insertion and elimination of element in it are described. There is also presented Turbo Boyer – Moore search algorithm. The thesis presents improvements of website, such as pages in several languages, search page, design of articles presentation and others. Conclusions and proposals, such as search by key words from the list, search word proposal, usage of CSS files and content management system are made after comparisons and improvements of website. PHP functions for spelling mistakes are described.
