The great sin: A critical study of Morley Callaghan's novels

Unknown Date (has links)
"A full-length analysis and assessment of Callaghan's novels is long overdue. This study seeks to make such an analysis and assessment. It will show that Callaghan deserves better treatment than he has received and that, because of the bulk and quality of his work, he is truly a major author and not just the best of a bad Canadian lot. The study will also make a direct attack on one of the commonplaces of Callaghan criticism: that Callaghan is guilty of 'moral flabbiness,' 'flabbiness of thought,' that his novels reflect confusion and an inability to come to conclusions about the basic issues of life"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "April, 1966." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy." / Advisor: Griffith T. Pugh, Professor Directing Dissertation. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 254-266).

Testing local Lorentz invariance in electrodynamics

Stanwix, Paul Louis January 2007 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] This thesis presents the design, construction and operation of a new rotating mod- ern Michelson-Morley test of Lorentz invariance. The experiment measures the isotropy of the speed of light by comparing the frequencies of two orthogonally ori- ented cryogenic sapphire whispering gallery mode resonators. Putative violations of Lorentz invariance will manifest as periodic variations in the difference frequency between the two resonators, related to the changing orientation of the experiment with respect to a preferred cosmological frame. Actively rotating the experiment is advantageous for three reasons. Firstly, by careful selection of the rotation frequency in the laboratory we are able to sample the isotropy of the speed of light at a rate that coincides with the optimal frequency instabilities of the oscillators (18 seconds). Secondly, the statistics of this exper- iment are improved with respect to non-rotating (stationary) experiments, which rely on the motion of the Earth to sample the isotropy of the speed of light. This results from integrating over more periods of rotation per unit of time, compared to the sidereal rotation experienced by stationary experiments. ... Many noise sources and systematic disturbances have been characterized and the operation of the experiment optimized. Two frequencies are generated at 10 GHz with 226 kHz separation, exhibiting a fractional frequency instability of less than 2x10-14 from 5 to 500 seconds. Furthermore, the work includes a detailed analysis of the experiment within the Standard Model Extension and Robertson, Mansouri and Sexl frameworks. The sensitivity of the experiment to violations of Lorentz invariance has been derived in each of these frameworks, for both short data set and the complete full year analysis. The data has been analysed using two separate data analysis techniques, which were optimised for noise present in the data. We have operated the experiment over the course of more than one year, collect- ing data more than 30 percent of the time. By analysing over 1 year of data we were able to set the first independent limits on 8 parameters in the photon sector of the Standard Model Extension as low as 10-16 for Ke- and 10-12 for Ko+ parameters, improving upon previous non-rotating experiments by up to an order of magnitude. We have also set new a new limit on the isotropy parameter PMM = 9.4(8.1)x10-11 of the Robertson, Mansouri and Sexl framework, which is a factor of 25 improvement.

[en] MORLEYS THEOREM / [pt] O TEOREMA DE MORLEY

LUCIO SEBASTIAO COELHO DA SILVA 09 March 2015 (has links)
[en] In this work, the main focus is the Morleys Theorem, whose formulation is based on one of three classical problems of Geometry: a trisection of an angle. From the historical context, it tries to insert the subject as motivation to the study of geometry. By the richness of the content or the difficulty involved in its construction, the Morleys triangle is a fine example of application to work with in the classroom. In parallel, a critical analysis of the difficulties that are found on the process of teaching and learning Mathematics, especially Geometry, is done in order to offer important benefits to the teaching activity and positively impacting their work. With demonstrations and applications that are shown it tries to fix up the acquired knowledge, as well as identifying ways to solutions of several similar geometric problems.

The Model Theory of Algebraically Closed Fields

Cook, Daniel January 2000 (has links)
Model theory can express properties of algebraic subsets of complex n-space. The constructible subsets are precisely the first order definable subsets, and varieties correspond to maximal consistent collections of formulas, called types. Moreover, the topological dimension of a constructible set is equal to the Morley rank of the formula which defines it.

Simple Groups Of Finite Morley Rank With A Tight Automorphism Whose Centralizer Is Pseudofinite

Ugurlu, Pinar 01 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is devoted to the analysis of relations between two major conjectures in the theory of groups of finite Morley rank. One of them is the Cherlin-Zil&#039 / ber Algebraicity Conjecture which states that infinite simple groups of finite Morley rank are isomorphic to simple algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields. The other conjecture is due to Hrushovski and it states that a generic automorphism of a simple group of finite Morley rank has pseudofinite group of fixed points. Hrushovski showed that the Cherlin-Zil&#039 / ber Conjecture implies his conjecture. Proving his Conjecture and reversing the implication would provide a new efficient approach to prove the Cherlin-Zil&#039 / ber Conjecture. This thesis proposes an approach to derive a proof of the Cherlin-Zil&#039 / ber Conjecture from Hrushovski&#039 / s Conjecture and contains a proof of a step in that direction. Firstly, we show that John S. Wilson&#039 / s classification theorem for simple pseudofinite groups can be adapted for definably simple non-abelian pseudofinite groups of finite centralizer dimension. Combining this result with recent related developments, we identify definably simple non-abelian pseudofinite groups with Chevalley or twisted Chevalley groups over pseudofinite fields. After that in the context of Hrushovski&#039 / s Conjecture, in a purely algebraic set-up, we show that the pseudofinite group of fixed points of a generic automorphism is actually an extension of a Chevalley group or a twisted Chevalley group over a pseudofinite field.
