Upgrading Marenzio's models : genre hierarchy and the parodies of Thomas Morley

Velle, Aimee. January 2007 (has links)
This study details the role of genre enhancement and genre upgrading in four parodies by Thomas Morley. These four parodies, first published in Morley's The First Book of Balletts to Five Voices (1595), are based on villanelles from Luca Marenzio's collection I cinque libri di Canzonette, Villanelle et arie alla Napolitana a tre voci (1584-1585). Through the application of specific techniques, Morley transformed Marenzio's villanelles into parodies that, according to Morley's treatise A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music, are higher in the genre hierarchy than their respective models. Comparative analyses will reveal the techniques of genre enhancement and genre upgrading at work in Morley's parodies.

Tradução comentada da primeira parte do tratado A plaine and easie introduction to practicall musicke (1597) de Thomas Morley / A commented translation of the first part of A Plaine and Easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke\" (1597) by Thomas Morley.

Domingos, Nathalia 10 October 2012 (has links)
This research contemplates the theory and practice of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century English music. Its main objective is to provide a commented translation of the first part of \"The Plaine and Easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke\" (1597) by Thomas Morley supported by explanatory notes and criticisms dealing with problems related to terminology and reflections on historical matters. The choice of Morleys treatise for this research is due to its comprehensive teaching of the main definitions of music theory at that time. It is in the first part that all the melodic and rhythmic elements necessary for the reading of a musical score are presented. Therefore, the translation of this important work into Portuguese should be very useful for musicians and publishers, as it will allow transcriptions and critical readings of modern editions and reading in facsimile. Moreover, it should also be essential for the study of English music of that period, as the English musical practice differs in some respects from that taught in the European continent.

The study of the construction of the self-feminine is highlighted in two major literary works of the Brazilian literature, one from 1942, Minha vida de menina, by Helena Morley; and another from 1973, As meninas, by Lygia Fagundes Telles. On the one hand, Morley describes a peaceful everyday life in a small town in Minas Gerais state in the end of the 19th century and, on the other hand, a bursting, urban, cosmopolitan and politicized life is tackled by Lygia Fagundes Telles. Tele’s introspective narrative in As meninas probes the human soul and explores the character’s existencial inquietudes. Through Lia, Ana Clara, and Lorena, the author analyses pshyhological, religious, philosophical and moral problems related to urban life. The narrators’ differing points of view, one belonging to the 19th century and the other three to the 20th century, result in na appreciation of the changing social landscape occupied by women. In a surprising way, Morley is ahead of her time when she questions the feminine condition, this being the most outstanding aspect of her book. Minha vida de menina and As meninas present us with diverse and distinct women’s profiles that, while consolidating their feminine positions in the society they are inserted, allow us to put them in check. Distinct points of view make us familiar with the many facets of the historical time these women lived. The result is a new history, a history interpreted by a female point of view. Historical moments such as the republic proclamation, slavery abolition and the military dictatorship are recreated by each of these women. The temporal treatment and the representation of the female body are categories representative, in these books, of the birth and development of a new Brazilian women, a freer woman concerning their bodies and possibilities of expression. Each author builds time in their works in a particular... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

On links between finite Morley and algebraic groups

Tindzogho Ntsiri, Jules 25 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis essentially focuses on relationships that may exist betweengroups of finite Morley rank and linear algebraic groups. Indeed, weestablish some algebraic properties to K-groups; while a linearity studyon these groups is drawn and allows in particular to obtain an analogueto Levi decomposition theorem of algebraic groups. Next, in a univers offinite Morley rank, we study a definable action of SL2(K) on an abeliangroup V such as V is SL2(K)-minimal, where K is an definable field ofnonzero characteristic. For that purpose, we show that Morley rank ofV denoted rk(V ) is even and multiple of rk(K). Finally, we analyze theconditions under which, given an algebraic group G over an algebraicallyfield of nonzero characteristic, the quotient G=Z(G) is definably linear.Besides, we show under certain assymptions that the group of definable automorphism of a simple K*-group is interpretable.
