Uso de líquens epifíticos no biomonitoramento da poluição atmosférica da região metropolitana de São Paulo / Atmospheric pollution biomonitoring of the São Paulo metropolitan region using epiphytic lichensAlessandra Fuga 26 January 2006 (has links)
Due to the increasing problems of atmospheric pollution in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region that affect the environment and human health the application of biomonitoring methodologies using cosmopolite organisms has now become relevant. Biomonitoring is a method to evaluate the response of live organisms to pollution. This method offers advantages such as reduced costs, efficient monitoring of large geographic areas and accumulated pollutants over a large period in which low concentrations of chemicals elements in the environment can be evaluated. In the present study, neutron activation analysis method was applied to determine elements accumulated in Canoparmelia texana lichenized fungi. Samples were collected in two distinct areas: Carlos Botelho (PECB) and Intervales (PEI) State Parks that are considered as non-polluted areas and that belong to the Atlantic Forest - SP ecosystem; and Sao Paulo city metropolitan region in sites near automatic monitoring stations of the Environmental Protection Agency of the State of Sao Paulo (CETESB). The lichens collected from the bark of the trees were properly treated, and irradiated with neutrons from IEA-R1 nuclear reactor along with synthetic standards of elements. The precision and the accuracy of the results were evaluated by the analyses of IAEA-336 LICHEN and Mixed Polish Herbs (INCT -MPH-2) certified reference materials. The results obtained for these materials were in accordance with the certified values and presented good precision with variation coefficients ranging from 0.9 to 14.6%. Results obtained for lichens showed that elements As, Co, Cr, Cs, La, Mo, Sb, Sc, Se and U are present at ng g-1 levels, Ba, Br, Cl, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Rb and Zn at μg g-1 and Ca at mg g-1. By applying cluster and discriminant analyses to the results for the lichen samples from areas with different levels of pollution, the sampling sites were grouped according to their chemical similarities and their elemental composition. It was also observed that samples from PECB and PEI were separated from groups and subgroups formed by the samples from the metropolitan region. This result indicates the preservation of PECB and PEI areas considered non-polluted. The lichens collected in the PEI presented, in general, lower concentrations of the elements than those from the metropolitan region of São Paulo in regards to those elements related to anthropogenic actions. The distribution maps of element concentrations allowed identification of sites in the metropolitan region that present higher elemental concentrations. Furthermore the distribution maps also showed that the pollution in the metropolitan region presents different profiles due to many sources and different pollutant emissions. The probable sources of elements determined in lichens from the metropolitan region are industrial, vehicular and soil. Results obtained indicate that the C. texana species can be used as a passive biomonitor of element pollution in the Sao Paulo metropolitan area. This species is abundant in both polluted and non-polluted areas and thus allows to distinguish regions with distinct levels of pollution.

Trace metal and speciation analysis using ion-exchange and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometryMenendez-Alonso, Elena January 2000 (has links)
Studies have been carried out on specific ion-exchange (Dowex 50W-X8 and Dowex 1-X8) and chelation (Chelex-100) resins, in order to determine their physical and chemical characteristics, to understand and explain their limits of function and to optimise their use as substrates in trace metal and speciation measurement by EDXRF. Structural information was obtained by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis showing a homogeneous distribution of functional groups and retained ions on both sectioned and whole resins. Particle size experiments performed on Dowex 50W-X8 (38 - 840 µm) showed that this parameter has no effect on the relationship between intensity of fluorescence and concentration or mass of resin. Inter-element effects were not observed in the analysis of multielemental specimens prepared on ion-exchange / chelation media by EDXRF. This indicates that the proposed method has a significant advantage when compared with other methodologies. A theoretical ‘model’, based on the formation of thin films on the surface of the resin beads, has been proposed in order to link and explain the effects observed in these experiments. The use of a batch retention system has shown distinct advantages over using columns in terms of linearity, accuracy, precision, rapidity and simplicity. Parameters such as pH and ionic strength of the solution, concentration of competing ions and volume of the sample have been proven to be critical. The maximum retention capacity has been determined as 3.2, 1.1 and 0.67 mEq/g for Dowex 50W-X8, Dowex 1-X8 and Chelex-100 respectively. The optimum mass of resin for XRF analysis was found to be 0.5 g, for all resins tested. The linear range covered 4 to 5 orders of magnitude. These findings show the potential of the investigated media to overcome instrumental and sample limitations. Based on the physico-chemical information found, methodologies for three different applications of the resins to EDXRF determinations have been developed and their analytical possibilities explored. The multi-elemental determination of metals in sewage sludge digests was achieved by retaining the metals on Dowex 50W-X8 at pH 2 and Chelex-100 at pH 4. Chelex-100 allows quantitative recoveries for Cu and Zn. A wider range of elements was determined on Dowex 50W-X8, although with poorer recoveries (60 - 90%). The limits of detection were 10 - 21 µg when Dowex 50W-X8 was used and 8 - 49 µg for Chelex-100. The method was validated by the analysis of a certified material. The determination of Kβ/Kα intensity ratios for Cr and Mn species and its potential as a tool for direct elemental speciation has also been studied. A difference in Kβ/Kα between the oxidation states of the analytes was only observed during the analysis of solutions of the metal species by EDXRF at the 98% level of confidence. Finally, the speciation and preconcentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in waters has been performed by retention on Dowex 50W-X8 and Dowex 1-X8 followed by EDXRF determination. Efficient recoveries and preconcentration factors of up to 500 were achieved, leading to limits of detection of 30 µg/L for Cr(VI) and 40 µg/L for Cr(III). This method is simple, fast and inexpensive, allowing quantitative recoveries in the speciation of chromium in waste waters.

Elemental analysis of some geological samples using neutron activation techniqueAsres Yihunie Hibstie 09 May 2013 (has links)
This study describes the technique and procedures used for the simultaneous determination
of elements involved in Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis, applied
to some geological samples as a sensitive and non-destructive tool. Using Isotopic
Neutron Source, the delayed gamma-rays emitted due to neutron capture have been
applied for the investigation of the elemental constituents and concentrations of major,
minor and trace elements in such samples.
The experimental investigations were carried out at the scale of researcher's practices
at the chosen site by measuring soil/rock nutrient contents from hydrologically
isolated farmland/site plots. Using detailed sampling procedures with special precautions,
against contaminations, to yield meaningful results, soil/rock samples have
been collected from selected areas of East Gojjam, pulverized, homogenized and prepared
for irradiation.
The samples were properly prepared together with known standards of potassium iodide
or cupric sulphate or arsenic trioxide (one /or both at a time), and simultaneously
irradiated in to isotopic neutron
ux in the same irradiation position. After activation,
the samples were subjected to gamma-ray spectrometry, using a high-purity germanium
detection system and computerized multichannel analyzer. The gamma-ray
spectra from the irradiated samples were measured by high resolution gamma-ray
spectrometry with a calibrated germanium detector. Both qualitative and quantitative
approach to data collection and analysis were used in order to gain insight into what should be acceptable to the community.
The results obtained have a practical interest in view of possible applications to the
technology of extraction and exploration of a variety of industrial, metallic, cement
minerals, and geothermal energy and coal deposits. These results tend to agree with
the lowest values reported in the literature, and the analytical precision is su cient
for the determination of the standard deviation of the distribution of all elements in
East Gojjam and these results were brie
y discussed within the text of this research
work.
In carrying out the analysis, the best and most convenient method being the Instrumental
and /non-destructive Neutron Activation Analysis was adopted, and NAA
has matured and attained analytical competence providing not only rapid, quantitative,
qualitative, simultaneous, multielement analysis but also crucial validation
support to programmes using di erent analytical techniques. This method of analysis
is generally multi-element and experimental conditions can be designed to be
nondestructive to the sample, and it plays a leading role among analytical techniques
in the eld of environmental research related to human, animal and plant
health.
Studies of di erent radionuclide and trace elements in the environmental samples are
very important for health physics, research and education. Many forms of elements
are possible in environmental samples which may be hazardous for human being, animals
and also plants. Most of them have the potential for both benefcial and harmful
effects / Environmental Sciences / D. Phil. (Environmental Science)
