The Impact of Online vs. Offline Acculturation on Purchase Intentions: A Multigroup Analysis of the Role of Education

Kizgin, Hatice, Jamal, A., Dwivedi, Y.K., Rana, Nripendra P. 05 May 2020 (has links)
Yes / The aim of this research is to determine the extent of online and offline acculturation preferences affecting purchase intentions within a minority ethnic community. This study investigates the role of social media as an agent in terms of how it influences acculturation and consumption. It also investigates the moderating role of education level. The findings highlight the significance of investigating language and friendship orientations and subsequent acculturation preferences. Empirical results confirm the impact of language and friendship orientations on enculturation/acculturation, which in turn impact purchase intentions. The results suggest differences among three groups in terms of their education level. The study discusses contribution to theory and provides future research directions, while offering useful practical implications for marketers.

A Multigroup Analysis of Reintegrative Shaming Theory: An Application to Drunk Driving Offenses

Dansie, Elizabeth J. 01 May 2011 (has links)
A restorative justice alternative to crime prevention termed reintegrative shaming theory by Braithwaite has seen increased attention as an alternative to retributive justice, although empirical investigations of its efficacy are limited. The purpose of the present study was to test confirmatory measurement and structural models of reintegrative shaming theory in order to assess the underlying theoretical model and the application of this theory in response to drunk driving offenses. Nine latent constructs were included in these models: reintegration, stigmatization, perceived fairness, self esteem, shame-guilt, embarrassment-exposure, unresolved shame, offender responsibility, and family support. Multigroup structural equation modeling was used to assess for measurement invariance of indicators used to measure these nine latent constructs between 724 drunk driving offenders randomly assigned to traditional court processing versus offenders assigned to reintegrative shaming conferencing following arrest. Partial metric and partial scalar invariance were found. Thus, analyses proceeded by conducting tests for significant differences in the latent means between groups. Offenders assigned to conferencing reported significantly higher mean values on the constructs reintegration, perceived fairness, self-esteem, shame-guilt, and family support, supporting Braithwaite's theory. Finally, a structural model was hypothesized based upon Braithwaite's theory to assess the relationships between the latent constructs. Three additional structural paths were included to achieve an acceptable model fit. This structural model was found to be partially invariant between groups. As predicted, a higher level of reintegration was associated with greater perceived fairness, while a higher level of stigmatization was related to decreased self-esteem and lower perceived fairness. In turn, greater self-esteem and perceived fairness were significantly related to higher reported experiences of shame-guilt and lower ratings of embarrassment exposure. Greater perceived fairness also corresponded to lower reported unresolved shame. Finally, greater shame-guilt was significantly related to greater offender responsibility and family support, while unresolved shame was significantly related to less offender responsibility acceptance. The findings from the current study support Braithwaite's hypotheses regarding the importance and benefits of disapproving of the criminal act and not the person, while allowing offenders to accept responsibility for their actions and attempt to remediate the wrong that they committed.

Os serviços públicos e o bem-estar subjetivo da população: uma modelagem multigrupos baseada em mínimos quadrados parciais / Public services and subjective well-being of the population: a multigrupos modeling based on partial least squares

Prearo, Leandro Campi 17 December 2013 (has links)
This study aimed to relate the evaluation of municipal utilities with subjective wellbeing (SWB) of individuals living in the Grande ABC Paulista. Initially raised fifty studies in the last ten years presented a quantitative study for understanding the possible discriminant of happiness, here operationalized as the term subjective well-being. These served as the theoretical basis for the understanding of the possible determinants of the SWB and the construction of the theoretical framework on the subject of SWB. Nevertheless, no studies were found with similar proposition in this study, but only small fragments of specific evaluations of public services in the wider contexts of evaluation. Found 114 possible variables predictive of SWB, especially age, family income, gender, marital status, occupation and education, related in more than 50 % of the texts and selected as moderators of the relationship between the Evaluation of Municipal Utilities (ASPM) and Subjective Well - Being (SWB). The construct was operationalized ASPM from 22 variables and construct SWB from 4 variables. The field research was conducted in the Region of the Grande ABC Paulsita, by sampling a probabilistic cluster biphasic considering margin of error of 3 % and a confidence level of 95 %, resulting in a sample of 1,070 cases. The analysis was performed by using descriptive statistic, bivariate and by applying the technique of Structural Equation Modeling based on partial least squares (PLS). The results suggest a weak but statistically significant relationship between the SWB and ASPM, moderated by all five variables proposed, suggesting that public services affect the quality of the well- being of individuals, especially when evaluation is performed in specific strata. It is suggested to carry out subsequent study with focus only on users of public services evaluated.

The Role of Acculturation, Ethnic Identity, and Religious Fatalism on Attitudes Towards Seeking Psychological Help Among Coptic Americans.

Boulos, Sallie Ann 2011 May 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this current study was to determine the role of acculturation, ethnic identity, and religious fatalism regarding attitudes towards seeking psychological help among Coptic (Egyptian Christian) Americans. In addition, differences between groups of gender and generational status, first-generation adult immigrants versus U.S.-born second-generation Copts, were analyzed. The study had a total sample of 91 individuals that self-identified as Coptic by race and/or Coptic Orthodox by religion, who voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire. Results indicate that ethnic identity and acculturation are strong predictors of religious fatalistic beliefs, and those who identified as having more Arab ethnic identity and less assimilation to dominate culture have stronger religious fatalistic beliefs than those who identified with more western culture and an American ethnic identity. However, religious fatalism and ethnic identity were not significant predictors of attitudes towards seeking psychological help, and other variables such as stigma, language barriers, and skepticism of western psychology may be better predictors of attitudes towards seeking psychological help. Between groups comparisons identified subtle differences between males and females, and between first and second-generation Coptic Americans on acculturation, ethnic identity, and religious fatalism, but the groups were not statistically significant from one another. Clinical implications and directions for future research will also be discussed.
