Muse : um ambiente para modelagem de aplicações multimidia interativas com tradutor para e-lotos / MUSE: an interactive multimedia applications specification environment with translator to e-LOTOS

Gaspary, Luciano Paschoal January 1998 (has links)
It is notable the advance of multimedia applications utilization in several fields of human activity. Independent from the area, whether education or entertainment, the possibility to aggregate dynamic resources like audio and video to the ones already widely used like text and image results in benefits to the users of such applications. Besides, with the popularization of the Internet, there is an increasing demand for their execution in distributed environments. This work presents MUSE, a graphical environment for modeling interactive multimedia applications. Through an advanced graphic interface and a new high-level authoring model, it is possible to create complex systems in a fast and intuitive way. The authoring model proposed in this work and adopted by the tool deals with media objects distributed in a computer network, allowing the definition of acceptable delay thresholds and alternative media objects. Due to the large expressiveness of the model, however, specifications can be generated with logical and temporary inconsistencies. For this reason, the tool also provides E-LOTOS specifications used with the purpose of analyzing and verifying the applications aiming at validating the temporal requirements defined by the author. The formalization of the specifications by means of a TDF, beyond making their validation possible, provides descriptions free of ambiguities, which may be alternatively used by authors familiarized with the formal description technique. This work is part of DAMD (Distributed Multimedia Applications Design) project, sponsored by the Brazilian research council. Its main objectives are to provide a methodology to completely cover the distributed multimedia applications development cycle and to allow authors who are not expert in formal methods to easily develop their applications.

Some Active Queue Management Methods for Controlling Packet Queueing Delay. Design and Performance Evaluation of Some New Versions of Active Queue Management Schemes for Controlling Packet Queueing Delay in a Buffer to Satisfy Quality of Service Requirements for Real-time Multimedia Applications.

Mohamed, Mahmud H. Etbega January 2009 (has links)
Traditionally the Internet is used for the following applications: FTP, e-mail and Web traffic. However in the recent years the Internet is increasingly supporting emerging applications such as IP telephony, video conferencing and online games. These new applications have different requirements in terms of throughput and delay than traditional applications. For example, interactive multimedia applications, unlike traditional applications, have more strict delay constraints and less strict loss constraints. Unfortunately, the current Internet offers only a best-effort service to all applications without any consideration to the applications specific requirements. In this thesis three existing Active Queue Management (AQM) mechanisms are modified by incorporating into these a control function to condition routers for better Quality of Service (QoS). Specifically, delay is considered as the key QoS metric as it is the most important metric for real-time multimedia applications. The first modified mechanism is Drop Tail (DT), which is a simple mechanism in comparison with most AQM schemes. A dynamic threshold has been added to DT in order to maintain packet queueing delay at a specified value. The modified mechanism is referred to as Adaptive Drop Tail (ADT). The second mechanism considered is Early Random Drop (ERD) and, iii in a similar way to ADT, a dynamic threshold has been used to keep the delay at a required value, the main difference being that packets are now dropped probabilistically before the queue reaches full capacity. This mechanism is referred to as Adaptive Early Random Drop (AERD). The final mechanism considered is motivated by the well known Random Early Detection AQM mechanism and is effectively a multi-threshold version of AERD in which packets are dropped with a linear function between the two thresholds and the second threshold is moveable in order to change the slope of the dropping function. This mechanism is called Multi Threshold Adaptive Early Random Drop (MTAERD) and is used in a similar way to the other mechanisms to maintain delay around a specified level. The main focus with all the mechanisms is on queueing delay, which is a significant component of end-to-end delay, and also on reducing the jitter (delay variation) A control algorithm is developed using an analytical model that specifies the delay as a function of the queue threshold position and this function has been used in a simulation to adjust the threshold to an effective value to maintain the delay around a specified value as the packet arrival rate changes over time. iv A two state Markov Modulated Poisson Process is used as the arrival process to each of the three systems to introduce burstiness and correlation of the packet inter-arrival times and to present sudden changes in the arrival process as might be encountered when TCP is used as the transport protocol and step changes the size of its congestion window. In the investigations it is assumed the traffic source is a mixture of TCP and UDP traffic and that the mechanisms conserved apply to the TCP based data. It is also assumed that this consists of the majority proportion of the total traffic so that the control mechanisms have a significant effect on controlling the overall delay. The three mechanisms are evaluated using a Java framework and results are presented showing the amount of improvement in QoS that can be achieved by the mechanisms over their non-adaptive counterparts. The mechanisms are also compared with each other and conclusions drawn.

Some new localized quality of service models and algorithms for communication networks : the development and evaluation of new localized quality of service routing algorithms and path selection methods for both flat and hierarchical communication networks

Mustafa, Elmabrook B. M. January 2009 (has links)
The Quality of Service (QoS) routing approach is gaining an increasing interest in the Internet community due to the new emerging Internet applications such as real-time multimedia applications. These applications require better levels of quality of services than those supported by best effort networks. Therefore providing such services is crucial to many real time and multimedia applications which have strict quality of service requirements regarding bandwidth and timeliness of delivery. QoS routing is a major component in any QoS architecture and thus has been studied extensively in the literature. Scalability is considered one of the major issues in designing efficient QoS routing algorithms due to the high cost of QoS routing both in terms of computational effort and communication overhead. Localized quality of service routing is a promising approach to overcome the scalability problem of the conventional quality of service routing approach. The localized quality of service approach eliminates the communication overhead because it does not need the global network state information. The main aim of this thesis is to contribute towards the localised routing area by proposing and developing some new models and algorithms. Toward this goal we make the following major contributions. First, a scalable and efficient QoS routing algorithm based on a localised approach to QoS routing has been developed and evaluated. Second, we have developed a path selection technique that can be used with existing localized QoS routing algorithms to enhance their scalability and performance. Third, a scalable and efficient hierarchical QoS routing algorithm based on a localised approach to QoS routing has been developed and evaluated.

Πρωτόκολλα πραγματικού χρόνου για τη μετάδοση πληροφορίας πολυμέσων με δυνατότητα προσαρμογής σε δίκτυα μη εγγυημένης ποιότητας / Adaptive real-time protocols for multimedia transmission over best-effort networks

Κιουμουρτζής, Γεώργιος 11 January 2011 (has links)
Multimedia applications have gained in recent years an increasing demand from Internet users as they offer new opportunities and diverse multimedia services. These applications, however, are subject to restrictions which mainly have to do with its nature and are characterized by high requirements of the transmission rates (bandwidth-consuming applications) and their sensitivity to delays in the transmission of packets by the consignor to consignee (delay-sensitive applications). On the other hand, allegedly these applications are less sensitive to packet losses (packet-loss tolerant applications). The issue, however, with multimedia applications, except for the scope of the services which offer, is the Quality of Services (QoS) that is offered to the end user. This quality of services is directly linked to the above characteristics of multimedia applications. The approach so far by the research community and also the Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as regards ensuring the quality of service, has focused either to individually optimizing the efficiency of transmission protocols, or in the installation of additional equipment (servers) for the establishment of distribution networks (Content Distribution Networks, CDNS) which are normally positioned close to the final user. In addition, the growing effort of the research community with a view to increasing the quality of service offered new innovative solutions in the form of services-architectures like the Integrated Services (Intserv) and Differentiated Services (Diffserv ) which aspire to offer guarantees of quality of services in specific user groups. But these two architectures failed until now to become the solution for the provision of guarantees of quality of services to the end user due to difficulties in applying them which have to do with financial criteria and the structure of the Internet itself. Therefore, we can see that despite the progress made so far in networks technology the provision of QoS across the Internet is not still feasible with the result that multimedia services via the Internet (for example “YouTube”) are significantly affected by the changes of the network conditions. To this course, the research community has directed to the study of mechanisms which will be able to adjust the transmission rate of multimedia data, according to the conditions of the network, so as to offer the best possible quality of service to the end user. This effort could be classified into two broad categories, according to the way the multimedia information is routed, as follows: • Adaptation mechanisms for unicast transmission: In this case the adaptation mechanisms regulate the transmission rate between the sender and the receiver in a unicast connection. • Adaptation mechanisms for multicast transmission: In this case the adaptation mechanisms regulate the transmission rate between the sender and a group of receivers. Regarding the unicast transmission the predominant proposal is the congestion control mechanism that is termed as the “TCP-friendly Rate Control (TFRC) and has been accepted as an international standard by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In the area of multicast transmission the TCP-friendly Multicast Congestion Control (TFMCC) has also become acceptable as an experimental standard from IETF. Nevertheless, laboratory studies and experiments have shown that both TFRC and TFMCC are not the most suitable adaptation mechanisms for multimedia transmission. The main problems have to do with its friendliness towards the Transmission Connection Protocol (TCP) and the sudden fluctuations in the transmission. rate. These sharp variations of the transmission rates are an attribute non desirable by multimedia applications and particularly by real-time applications. In the area of wireless networks the problems with the transmission of multimedia data are not directly linked to the congestion of the network (this mainly occurs in wired networks) as the packet losses are a direct result of the free space propagation. The approach so far has aimed at the individual optimization of the various protocols of the OSI model so as to reduce the transmission problems and minimize packet losses and the delays from the sender to the end user. In recent years, however, a different approach which has prevailed to be termed internationally as “cross-layer optimization-adaptation” has earned more and more space. Under this approach we could be able to succeed the optimization of the service, regarding the quality of multimedia applications, by means of some adaptation mechanisms which will involve more than one of the OSI layers to current network conditions. The methodology, the challenges, the restrictions and the applications of cross layer adaptation constitute an open research area which is currently in progress. The aim of this dissertation is firs the study of the existing congestion control mechanisms which mainly concern best-effort wired networks, such as the Internet. In this direction we evaluate the existing congestion/flow control mechanisms and record the main problems related to the quality of service. The performance evaluation is based on criteria relating both to TCP-friendliness and the quality of service of multimedia applications. This performance evaluation leads us to the design of new protocols which promise greater TCP-friendliness and better quality of service. An important element that distinguishes these protocols of the other approaches is the “smooth” behavior by which we minimize the high oscillations of the transmission rate, which are not desirable by multimedia applications, while maintaining a high response to sudden changes of network conditions. A second important element of this dissertation is the additions we have made to the libraries of the ns-2 simulator which are already exploited by other researchers. For this purpose the new protocols are fully defined and incorporated into the ns-2 libraries so as to be available to the research community as part of the simulator, for further studies and evaluation. At the same time we expand existing research tools in order to enable the analysis and evaluation of existing and future mechanisms based on quality criteria specific to multimedia applications, along with network-centric criteria. Regarding the wireless networks we study the cross layer adaptation and how it is possible to achieve the increase in the quality of service by implementing such a design. We study the various ways and design methodologies of a cross layer adaptation and propose a new framework with which it is possible to increase the quality of service in hybrid networks consisting of both by wired and wireless users.

Abstraction et comparaison de traces d'exécution pour l'analyse d'applications multimédias embarquées / Abstraction and comparison of execution traces for analysis of embedded multimedia applications

Kamdem Kengne, Christiane 05 December 2014 (has links)
The SoC-Trace project aims to develop a set of methods and tools based on execution traces of multicore embedded applications to meet the growing needs of observability and 'débogability' required by the industry. The project aims in particular the development of new analytical methods, based on different data analysis techniques such as probabilistic analysis, data mining, and data aggregation. They should allow the automatic identification of anomalies, the analysis of complex correlations and dependencies between different components of an embedded application and control of the volume traces that can now exceed the gigabyte. The aim of the thesis is to provide a high-level representation of information in the trace based semantics. It will initially develop an effective tool for comparing traces, to define a semantic distance for execution traces, then a second time to analyze and interpret the results of comparisons of traces based on the defined distance.

Their participation in cinemas, theaters, educational environment, among others, is often limited due to the lack of solutions that enable their interaction and participation. For the deaf, for example, the accessibility resources normally provided at the cinema room is limited to subtitle text format. This is the predominant solution on the current scenario. However, on the other hand, there are some studies that are in progress to try to solve these problems, such as the use of second screen devices to project content with sign language. For the blind, the accessibility problem is further aggravated because currently there are few cinema rooms that o er the resources of audio description. Normally, the blind rely solely on the help of family or friends to narrate the events during the exhibition of the lm. The accessibility point of view, these approaches are considered ine cient, since the deaf, for example, have enough trouble reading and writing in the spoken language of their country. Therefore, to minimize these problems, this paper presents a computational solution capable of automatically generating from the subtitles, video tracks with Brazilan Sign Language (Libras) windows for deaf users, and from the movie script, produce audio description for blind users and distribute such content for users using the second screen devices. Experiments using a prototype showed that the solution has the potential to generate e ciently contents intelligible for this users, increasing your access to this technology type.

Some new localized quality of service models and algorithms for communication networks. The development and evaluation of new localized quality of service routing algorithms and path selection methods for both flat and hierarchical communication networks.

Mustafa, Elmabrook B.M.

Analysis and improvement of medium access control protocols in wireless networks : performance modelling and Quality-of-Service enhancement of IEEE 802.11e MAC in wireless local area networks under heterogeneous multimedia traffic

Hu, Jia January 2010 (has links)
In order to efficiently utilize the scarce wireless resource as well as keep up with the ever-increasing demand for Quality-of-Service (QoS) of multimedia applications, wireless networks are undergoing rapid development and dramatic changes in the underlying technologies and protocols. The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, which coordinates the channel access and data transmission of wireless stations, plays a pivotal role in wireless networks. Performance modelling and analysis has been and continues to be of great theoretical and practical importance in the design and development of wireless networks. This research is devoted to developing efficient and cost-effective analytical tools for the performance analysis and enhancement of MAC protocols in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) under heterogeneous multimedia traffic. To support the MAC-layer QoS in WLANs, the IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol has proposed three QoS differentiation schemes in terms of Arbitrary Inter-Frame Space (AIFS), Contention Window (CW), and Transmission Opportunity (TXOP). This research starts with the development of new analytical models for the TXOP scheme specified in the EDCA protocol under Poisson traffic. A dynamic TXOP scheme is then proposed to adjust the TXOP limits according to the status of the transmission queue. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that the proposed dynamic scheme largely improves the performance of TXOP. To evaluate the TXOP scheme in the presence of ii heterogeneous traffic, a versatile analytical model is developed to capture the traffic heterogeneity and model the features of burst transmission. The performance results highlight the importance of taking into account the heterogeneous traffic for the accurate evaluation of the TXOP scheme in wireless multimedia networks. To obtain a thorough and deep understanding of the performance attributes of the EDCA protocol, a comprehensive analytical model is then proposed to accommodate the integration of the three QoS schemes of EDCA in terms of AIFS, CW, and TXOP under Poisson traffic. The performance results show that the TXOP scheme can not only support service differentiation but also improve the network performance, whereas the AIFS and CW schemes provide QoS differentiation only. Moreover, the results demonstrate that the MAC buffer size has considerable impact on the QoS performance of EDCA under Poisson traffic. To investigate the performance of EDCA in wireless multimedia networks, an analytical model is further developed for EDCA under heterogeneous traffic. The performance results demonstrate the significant effects of heterogeneous traffic on the total delay and frame losses of EDCA with different buffer sizes. Finally, an efficient admission control scheme is presented for the IEEE 802.11e WLANs based on analytical modelling and a game-theoretical approach. The admission control scheme can maintain the system operation at an optimal point where the utility of the Access Point (AP) is maximized with the QoS constraints of various users.
