Marketing in Music Therapy: A Survey of Self-Employed Music Therapists to Identify Methods of Marketing Planning, Positioning, Promotion, and Implementation

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT A survey of board-certified music therapists who identified themselves as self-employed was conducted to examine current methods of marketing related to planning, positioning, promotion, and implementation within a music therapy private practice or contracting model, as well as identify trends in marketing methods as compared to prior research. Respondents (n=273) provided data via online survey as to current marketing practices, assessment of personal marketing skills, and views on marketing's overall role in their businesses. Historical, qualitative, and quantitative distinctions were developed through statistical analysis as to the relationship between respondents' views and current marketing practices. Results show that self-employed music therapists agree marketing is a vital part of their business and that creating a unique brand identity is necessary to differentiate oneself from the competition. A positive correlation was identified between those who are confident in their marketing skills and the dollar amount of rates charged for services. Presentations, websites, and networking were regarded as the top marketing vehicles currently used to garner new business, with a trend towards increased use of social media as a potential marketing avenue. Challenges for respondents appear to include the creation and implementation of written marketing plans and maintaining measurable marketing objectives. Barriers to implementation may include confidence in personal marketing skills, time required, and financial constraints. The majority of respondents agreed that taking an 8-hour CMTE course regarding marketing methods for self-employed music therapists would be beneficial. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.M. Appropriating fundamentally of the conception of the syntagma: Identity-Metamorphosis-Emancipation, to develop a theoretical analysis of semi-structured interview of the subject based on the methodological foundation of the life history narrative. Since the main aspect of identity to be thorough in this research is in the dimension of recognition, we intend to study the relationship that the recognition of professional identity has with the recognition of personal identity, exploring collective identity and individual identity issues based in concepts such as: generalized other in Mead (1973), paper identity, identity of self in Habermas (1983), identity politics and political identities in Goffman (1975) / Ciampa (2002), and legal recognition and social esteem in Honneth (2003). After exposure of the literature review, the deepening on the assumptions of identity theory, and the methodological analysis of the interview, it is intended with the final considerations present data completed on the relationship that the recognition order occupies in the identity of the music therapist and the meaning attributed the same to relate their personal identity and their professional identity / A presente pesquisa tem como intenção contribuir com os estudos dos processos de metamorfose e os movimentos emancipatórios, procura-se compreender a constituição e o desenvolvimento da identidade profissional do Musicoterapeuta, quais são os possíveis movimentos dialéticos de regulação / emancipação e as relações de reconhecimento da identidade profissional, utilizando-se do conceito de identidade elaborado pela teoria de Ciampa (2007) e dos pressupostos teóricos do Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa Identidade Metamorfose (NEPIM).

Music therapists' experiences of practicing family-based music therapy: an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Adams, Lee-Anne 14 January 2016 (has links)
Although music therapy work with families has been documented for many years, the focus has remained on techniques and client outcomes rather than therapeutic process. The purpose of this study was to gain understanding and knowledge of the lived experience of music therapists who practice family-based music therapy. This research was conducted within the interpretative phenomenological framework. Three subjects who provided family-based music therapy participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences. Three main interpretative themes emerged from the analysis of the data relative to the therapists’ expressed experience of their work with families: perseverance, resilience, and faith in the process. Discussion of the results, strengths and limitations of the study, and implications for training and further research are presented. / February 2016

Music therapists use songwriting interventions to address a variety of goals with several populations. An online survey was sent to 6,292 board-certified music therapists, 324 of whom completed the survey. Participants reported that they use counseling techniques, singing, and songwriting with individuals who are grieving. Respondents indicated that songwriting was most effective in increasing emotional expression of clients who are grieving. All participants (N = 324, 100%) believed that songwriting could be an effective intervention for clients who are grieving. Music therapists expressed a need for further training in implementing songwriting interventions.
