This dissertation investigates a "universal" question--what the exact nature of the relationship between music and theology is--by examining two particulars: (1) the music and thought of the French Roman Catholic composer Olivier Messiaen, and (2) the theology of music of Protestant theologian/musicologist Oskar Sohngen. / It should be emphasized, however, that the main focus of the paper is upon the "particulars," since the primary objective of this study is to demonstrate the remarkable similarity of thought which exists between the theory of Sohngen and the musical practice of Messiaen. After an exposition of Sohngen's three categories of relationship between music and theology (music as science, as worship, and as creatura) there is an extensive examination of Messiaen's compositional techniques which reveals the latter's implicit use of these same three categories. / In the final chapter of this work, after a discussion of several problems which are inherent in each of the particular approaches to music and theology, there is a return to the universal question, in response to which a precise, working definition is finally established.

Sounding sacred: Interpreting musical and poetic trances.

This essay investigates the relationship between trance and various musical and poetic expressions that accompany trance when it is interpreted as sacred. In other words, the aim of this investigation is to interpret how experiences of the entrancing power of the sacred come to expression with the sounds of music and poetry. I articulate such an interpretation through the following four sections: I) a discussion of the basic phenomenological and hermeneutic problems of interpreting what other people experience as sacred phenomena, II) an account of the hermeneutic context within which modern Western discourse interprets trance as madness that perverts the rational limits of the self, III) an interpretation of the expressions of trance that appear in the poetry of William Blake, and IV) an interpretation of expressions of trance that appear in the music of Afro-Atlantic religions (including Vodu in West Africa, Santería in Cuba, and Candomblé in Brazil).

One author has said, "....in religion music always has been a means of reaching the depths of the human heart, even when spoken or written words fail." The Assyrians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all used music in their ceremonies. The Hebrews used trumpets, cymbals and harps as part of their worship, and some of the most outstanding hymns were written by their King David. The Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 5119-20 advised to "speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and sacred songs. Sing praise to God with all your hearts, "2 During the Dark Ages, music was kept alive by the church, and during the Renaissance much of the outstanding music was written for the church. Rock music and the morals and values of teenagers : a Christian perspective

M.Ed. (Education) / During the last two decades there has been a definite lowering of moral standards among the children of the West. This also pertains to the youth in South Africa. Among the many influences the child experiences in society, rock music, with its themes of sex, drugs, satanism, rebellion, materialism, secular humanism, suicide, nihilism, hedonism, blasphemy and profanity is possibly the most negative. Add to the above-mentioned, subliminal mind control and backward masking and it becomes clear why the Christian educator and the Christian parent must address the problem of rock and roll. Furthermore, rock music has directly or indirectly been responsible for much of the anti-social behaviour of present day youth. Tragically, modern day society is responsible for promoting the rock culture (with the help of modern technology), by making available to the youth of today records, videos and magazines, without realising the spiritual and moral damage they are causing. The modern day music entrepreneur has motives that are not honourable and not Christian as it is m?ney that makes the music go around. A very extensive literature study confirmed the above. As norms and values differ from culture to culture, the Christian norm was chosen as the irrevocable absolute norm rooted in the Word of God, to judge the morals upheld by the propagators of rock and roll. On the basis of the literature study done, an empirical investigation, formulating items obtained from the study for inclusion in the questionnaire, was conducted. The sample consisted of English speaking boys and girls in standard 7 and standard 9 from four high schools on the near East Rand. An examination of pre- and post-Vatican II music for the Roman Catholic liturgy: ethnic diversity as a vehicle of unity

The Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965 initiated the translation of the Roman Catholic liturgy into languages other than Latin, spurring numerous ethnic musical settings which have seemingly departed from the unitive nature of a universal Latin liturgy. Following an examination of the musical history of the Latin liturgy, this document examines the changes introduced into music for the Roman Catholic liturgy after Vatican II, discussing how different parishes have subsequently incorporated the teachings of the Council with regard to music for the liturgy. The relationship between mbira dzavadzimu mode and Zezuru Spirit Possession. This thesis investigates the relationship between mbira dzavadzimu modes and different levels of Zezuru spirit possession. The research adopted an ethnographic paradigm. Fieldwork, participant observation, face-to-face interviews and video recordings were employed during data collection. The theoretical underpinnings of the research were grounded in Neher’s 1960 theory of auditory driving1, Seeger’s 1987 theory of metamorphosis, Wiredu’s 2007 theory of interpretation and Tempels’ 1959 theory of cosmology. The researcher carried out the research from an emic perspective. Both deep reflexivity and narrative reflexivity frameworks were used in the writing of this documentation and editing of my film. The position of mbira music in the religious life of the Zezuru is quite significant in that it is used to evoke spirits in spirit mediums during occasions when the Zezuru communicate with their ancestors. Mbira music is embedded in the modes and tuning systems played on the mbira. The Zezuru believe that the modes belong to the ancestors and are passed from generation to generation as part of their heritage.
