Uma abordagem do romance Kokoro de Natsume Sôseki / A approach of the Kokoro novel of Natsume Sôseki

João Marcelo Amaral Reimão Monzani 26 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation is centered in a critical reading of the novel Kokoro, published in 1914, by Natsume Soseki. As the central thematic axis of our research it was chosen the notion of individualism given its importance to the analysed novel and its critical reception. First, in chapter 1, we tried to clarify the concept of individualism and its central meanings. Then, in chapter 2, we examined how such notion has been worked upon by the writer not in his fictional prose, but in a lecture called My individualism, which has been translated for the first time into Portuguese for our specific purpose. Finally, in chapter 3, we have critically examined the novel, always bearing in mind our thematic focus.

The order of the day : Script error in military organisations and violence against civilians

Lönnberg, Linnea January 2019 (has links)
In an attempt to understand the micro-dimensional mechanisms of how some individuals come to perpetrate violence against civilians during wartime, this thesis adopts a theory from organisational psychology. By looking at the military as a professional organisation, violence against civilians perpetrated by state armies during wartime is theorised to be the outcome of a process of script error wherein military scripts of non-combatant immunity fail. The theory is applied on the massacre in My Lai, during the Vietnam war. Findings showed that the mechanism of script error did not play out completely as theorised, however that military scripts did dictate behaviour and that a script error was present to some degree as civilians came to be targeted as if they were enemies. Some mechanisms used in previous research on violence against civilians were supported by this study and could also be integrated into the framework of organisational scripts, showing the explanatory value that organisational scripts have to further understand military violence. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of an important historical case, shows the value of introducing organisational psychology into studies of the military organisation and finally helps us further make sense of situations of violent transgression.  organisational scripts, script error, military violence, violence against civilians, mass violence, atrocity, My Lai

Steady State Hydroplaning Risk Analysis and Evaluation of Unsteady State Effects

Yassin, Menna 17 June 2019 (has links)
Hydroplaning is a major concern on high speed roadways during heavy rainfall events. Hydroplaning tools are widely used by designers to reduce their roadway’s hydroplaning potential, therefore reducing the possibilities of severe crashes. This dissertation presents two methodologies for improving the prediction of hydroplaning potential. The first phase focused on improving an existing widely used software called PAVDRN. Using multiple datasets from the Florida Department of Transportation, the author filtered the data using specific criteria to leave only truly dynamic hydroplaning crashes. The author then evaluated PAVDRN’s prediction capabilities and assessed its reliability in predicting a hydroplaning crash. Using past accident statistics, the author accounted for extraneous factors that are difficult to capture, such as driver behavior, and obtained probability factors for a more realistic estimate of hydroplaning risk on roadways. The second phase focused on improving the modeling technique used in hydroplaning prediction tools. Currently when assessing a roadway’s hydroplaning potential, the roadside drainage is not considered in the analysis. The author modeled a combined pavement-drainage system using a 1D/2D method to better capture the effects of roadside drainage, especially in the events of flooding. The methodology used in modeling successfully captures the backwater effects that are caused under critical flooding conditions. Lastly the author created a new tool (MY-PAVDTCH) to provide design engineers with updated waterfilm thickness values under roadside drainage flooded conditions.

Applying MBTI to analyzing shōnen manga characters : A case study of My Hero Academia

Suvanto, Marttaleena January 2020 (has links)
This is a case study of a popular shōnen manga, My Hero Academia, written andillustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. The study’s aim is to determine the personality typesof five characters, while utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The secondaryaim is finding out which details help in the MBTI analysis and which do not. Thethird aim is to look into what are the difficulties of executing this kind of study. Theinitial focus of the analysis was the characters’ actions, dialogue, body language, facial expressions, use of role language and how the manga artist utilizes theJapanese scripture. The final results show that the characters are INFJ, ENTP, ENFP,INTJ and ESTJ types, and that the most helpful methods are to look at acombination of the characters’ actions, speech, body language, behavior, andexpressions. In addition, the method of analysis occasionally depends on thecharacter in question. While the scripture does not help in gaining the results, thechoice of language for the characters gives additional affirmation for the resultsbut does not work by itself to affirm any MBTI types. The main challenge is decidingwhich of the MBTI type pair polarities has more value to the character’s personalityto become the preference.

Evaluation on “My pages” for public transport in Värmland : A study on improving the user experience for citizens / Utvärdering av ”Mina sidor” för kollektivtrafik i Värmland : En studie om ökad användarupplevelse för medborgarna

Målström, Mikaela January 2021 (has links)
The digitization in public transport is aimed at all citizens, which means that everyone should be able to use IT-based services in a simple way and obtain available information. The purpose of this study is to identify the usability issues that can occur on “My pages” of county-wide bus service. The purpose is to find out the improvements that can be made to the efficiency and user experience on My pages based on the comments of the test participants.  The research questions in this study are: What usability problems can be identified on My pages? What efficiency improvements can be made on My pages based on test participant feedback and how is the user experience perceived by test participants? The methods used during this study are usability testing using eye-tracking equipment, observation, thinking aloud, and structured interview that includes background questions about the participants.  The results are based on the data collection through the test participants. Eight usability issues were identified, and eight improvement points were revealed. Eye-tracking equipment combined with gaze-plots and observation can be used to see how a usability problem arises. Test participants comments when thinking aloud and interviewing give a better understanding of testing behavior.

Power Structures in Willa Cather’s My Ántonia / Maktstrukturer i Willa Cathers My Ántonia

Jonsson Kvist, Anna-Karin January 2021 (has links)
The thesis in this essay states that Ántonia Shimerda and Lena Lingard in My Ántonia achieve a higher degree of woman emancipation because of their active response to prevailing power structures and that Cather uses the hardships and disappointments of these young women to highlight these power structures. Therefore, My Ántonia can be regarded as a novel taking a stand against patriarchal power structures. The primary text is My Ántonia by Willa Cather, which is analysed with the help of Foucault’s theory of power and Judith Butler’s gender theories. The essay discusses which power structures are affecting Ántonia Shimerda and Lena Lingard and how these obtain a higher degree of woman emancipation due to their response to these power structures. Furthermore, the essay also deals with which inequalities in society that are highlighted by Cather in My Ántonia and how this is made.
