Beslioglu, Bahar 01 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This study is a critical inquiry into the changes of the conceptualisations of the term &ldquo / program&rdquo / in architectural discourse, particularly after the 1960s and early 1970s. The aim of this thesis is to benefit from the difficulty of defining &ldquo / program&rdquo / in architecture as a fruitful, pragmatic and intellectual source. Although several terms, such as &ldquo / function,&rdquo / &ldquo / use,&rdquo / &ldquo / occupation,&rdquo / &ldquo / activity,&rdquo / and &ldquo / event&rdquo / fulfil some aspects, none of them suggest an exact definition of the term &ldquo / program&rdquo / in architecture. Neither does the introduction of the existence of the terms &ldquo / temporary activities,&rdquo / &ldquo / spontaneity,&rdquo / &ldquo / coincidence,&rdquo / &ldquo / hybridisation,&rdquo / and &ldquo / interface spaces,&rdquo / which consider the emergence of &ldquo / temporality&rdquo / as a more considerable variable in contemporary architecture, provides an adequate definition for the term. Therefore, in this research &ldquo / program&rdquo / in architecture is problematized as a &ldquo / weakly&rdquo / defined phenomenon. This study introduces the idea of &ldquo / programmatic experimentation&rdquo / by exploring and re-reading the work of Gordon Matta-Clark, in which &ldquo / experimentation&rdquo / led to the evaluation of &ldquo / program&rdquo / as &ldquo / concept.&rdquo / &ldquo / Program&rdquo / is re-conceptualised under two theoretical statements defining the general framework of this study: &ldquo / Concept&rdquo / and &ldquo / Experimentation&rdquo / . &ldquo / Concept,&rdquo / as introduced by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, produces a direction towards thinking to allow a new understanding by constructing multiple situations rather than constricting program&rsquo / s definition with specific terms. &ldquo / Experimentation&rdquo / suggests that the consequences of the experimental attempts of the 1960s and early 1970s are more than just technological possibilities inserted into architecture, revealing a shift in architectural &ldquo / program.&rdquo / In the end, the implementation of the constructed togetherness of the two terms is traced through the work of Matta-Clark as a radical criticism of the established conventions of architectural discourse.

A Survey Of Form Creation Processes Within The Evolution Of The Organic Tradition In Architecture

Ruhi, Isil 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Beginning with the developments in biological sciences since the 1750s, many scientists have been exploring the characteristics of Nature and the living. These developments, not only enabled humans to understand the interrelations among natural beings, but also influenced and shaped an organic tradition of architectural design during modernity. In many contemporary computer-aided projects, organicity is still seen to hold a decisive though different role in formal processes, as well as acting as a guide in the design process. The thesis explores the architectural design processes involved with the natural processes in form-making within the context of the computational paradigm. To this end, organic/genomic architecture examples are researched, proceeding through a historical analysis of the characteristics of the organic tradition in modern architecture, discussed and re-analyzed within the context of instances of contemporary organic projects in computer-aided design. Through the analysis of such projects and their properties, organicism is re-evaluated within the realm of computational design.

Housing As A Sustainable Architecture In Turkey: A Research On Toki Housing

Sezer, Mete 01 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Turkey, as a developing country, requires substantial amount of housing stock. TOKi (Toplu Konut idaresi &amp / #8211 / Housing Development Administration), as the pioneer housing project builder, has a great significance in the housing production of Turkey. However both in TOKi projects and in general, sustainability has not been a central issue for the architectural practice in Turkey. On the other hand sustainability is an in evitable issue when the environmental, social, cultural and economical benefits are concerned. Especially sustainability in TOKi projects has a significance due to their potential to establish a re-production model. This thesis explores the benefits of sustainability for the housing project design in Turkey. The existing situation of three different types of TOKi housing projects will be critically evaluated. In the end, it will be tried to attain proposals for the development of sustainable housing in Turkey.

Value Assessment For Industrial Heritage In Zonguldak

Kilinc, Aysem 01 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to develop a value assessment method for industrial heritage in Zonguldak, one of the symbolic industrial cities in Turkey where mining has been the leading force since the discovery of hard coal in the mid-19th century. Values to decide what to conserve and why are searched during this process under the light of discussions on industrial heritage and values of the architectural conservation. Focusing on this aim, this study is structured in four parts as the survey on industrialization and industrial heritage, review and discussion of value types, research on Zonguldak, and implementation of value assessment process for the selected study area with the proposed value types. To conclude, value assessment process is a vital step in conservation of cultural heritage. For the industrial heritage, a relatively recent concept in the conservation discipline, existing value types need to be re-assessed. This thesis performs an exemplification of value assessment for industrial heritage over a selected study area in the Zonguldak coalfield and proposes possible decisions under the light of this valuation.

Exploring Knowledge Management In The Practice Of Architecture: A Pilot Study From The Turkish Capital

Kayacetin, Cihan Nuri 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry has recently been altering the ways of managing its resources. Knowledge is considered to be among the most precious of these resources. Knowledge is a critical factor in choosing the right projects, preparing the winning bids and successfully realizing the projects. It is also a critical factor for organizations because of the fact that - due to its nature that it exists as tacit or explicit, or in between - it is hard to record and reuse. This study investigates the knowledge management issue in the practice of architecture. Face-to-face interviews have been carried out with 15 architectural offices in &Ccedil / ankaya district of Ankara. The subject domain is assumed to be experiencing problems such as managing knowledge at a strategic level. This is due to the facts that the amount and importance of tacit knowledge is significant and communication of this knowledge to other parties is the responsibility of the architectural partners. The survey found out that management of architectural knowledge is considered to be beneficial for the overall productivity of architectural offices. However, challenges such as lack of standard procedures and low profit margins in the AEC industry render this activity to be less effective on profit and innovation in design.

Development And Conservation Of Cultural Properties In Rural Areas Of Eastern Blacksea Region: A Case Study In Karacakaya Village

Demirel, Gul Devrim 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Eastern Blacksea region has substantial and regional sources with its natural, historic and traditional properties. Contrary to urban settlement, rural areas and settlements have formed in time due to interaction with nature, ethnic cultures and traditional living styles. The village settlements that subject this study have historical and cultural values with architectural buildings in regional character, formed natural tissue and local traditions. Mezras and Yaylas related with village settlements however, provide natural values with diversity of flora, climate and landscape. All these areas that have different status in traditional living style have different values and problems. All the same, these areas that at the present are unoccupied have been degenerating rapidly represent different opportunities and potentials. In this study / characteristic components of a typical Eastern Blacksea rural village settlement are analyzed, values of these components are determined and their conservation problems are identified through a case study in Karacakaya village. In the last chapter solutions are asked for the questions how village settlements take a function upon rural areas in the region scale and how natural, architectural and cultural values are need to be conserved in conservation-use balance.

Evaluation Of Urban Regeneration Issues For An Early 20th Century Quarter: Kadikoy-yeldegirmeni

Tarkay, Guse 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In the 60s, a new notion gentrification was used as a kind of residential transformation and gained importance in the 1970s and 1980s through the world. The notion used for the quarters invaded by upper income people and transformed to eloquent and expensive quarters after some renewal projects. This process is criticized because of some negative effects such as, displacement of old residents, increase of the prices in the area, appearance of conflict between the people of community and disappearance of social diversity. Different waves of gentrification caused transformations in some urban quarters of istanbul. Yeldegirmeni, as an early 20th century historical urban quarter of Kadik&ouml / y, is a potential area that may face with the threat of gentrification in the coming years because of some properties like historical character of the quarter, location that is close to the Kadik&ouml / y center, diverse transportation facilities and the existence of pioneers and investors. Considering that sustainable settlements of a city upgrade the environmental quality and life patterns of the inhabitants, provide social unity between them, increase the social consciousness, this thesis proposes a sustainable regeneration model for Yeldegirmeni to avoid gentrification. iskele Street in Yeldegirmeni is selected to make the spatial and social analyses in the quarter. According to these analyses, a pilot regeneration proposal which includes physical needs, physical interventions, functional decisions, social and environmental recommendations and average total cost is provided for iskele Street. Taking into the pilot regeneration proposal of one street, some decisions are constituted for the regeneration process throughout Yeldegirmeni.
