Gunhan, Aslihan 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The transformation of historic houses into house museums is not only a current issue within the field of museology, but also a new phenomenon for architecture. The deconstruction of the term &ldquo / house museum&rdquo / into &ldquo / house&rdquo / and &ldquo / museum&rdquo / and the meaning these terms acquire, have the potential to generate a new discussion in architecture. Besides being a physical dwelling unit, &ldquo / house&rdquo / will be interpreted as a domestic space where the inhabitants are able to personalize. A museum, on the other hand, will be approached as a modern institution reflecting issues related with historiography and aesthetics. &ldquo / Curiosity Cabinets&rdquo / as the origin of museums are re-visited for its conceptual correspondence with the house museum. Interpreting the house museum as the new curiosity cabinet, the analysis of the terms &ldquo / house&rdquo / , &ldquo / home&rdquo / , &ldquo / museum&rdquo / and &ldquo / house museum&rdquo / has the power to decipher the potentials of a spatial transformation, which renders the curiosity arousing concepts and spatial formations visible. The important positions of the thesis are mainly to understand the transformation in the architecture discipline under the umbrella of globalization and to define the current situation of residential architecture dominated by the new actors of construction sector through the transformation of identity value. In the first part of the study, how the production of residential architecture in Turkey is affected by the new values of capitalist globalization in the 21st century is examined. In order to monitor the development by the reflections of new actors in residential architecture, Istanbul is defined as a domain of the study. The main aim is to read the spatial and socio-cultural changes and developments in terms of residential architecture and to explore how the structure of the city affected by global developments and neo-liberal economic policies has formed. Thus, an inventory is established by the multi-unit housing projects completed in the first decade of the 21st century and the full list is investigated in terms of various kinds of housing supply and the different socio-economic status groups addressed by the projects. After defining the relation of residential architecture with city, the specific contribution of this dissertation is the explication of the role of the marketing industry in the formation of residential architecture through the conception of identity. The effects of marketing strategies on the architectural formation are discussed through selected cases to uncover which attitudes have caused the transformation in the internal values of the residential architecture. Therefore, the discussion on the identity formed by the coercive notions and the personalization of the actors involved in the process provides a basis for analysing the reflections of different disciplines on the architectural formation. This new discussion ground not only identifies the decisiveness of the architectural design in the formation of the end product but also contributes to the probe of the positional existence of the architect.

The Role Of The Architect And Autonomy Of Architecture: An Inquiry Into The Position Of The Early Modern Architect And Architecture: Le Corbusier And Maison Curutchet

Seyhun, Canan 01 April 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is an inquiry into the position of architecture both as a cultural product and as an autonomous discipline. The purpose to search for architectural autonomy is to discover architecture&rsquo / s internal values that can make architects become more aware of their tools and potentials. That kind of research is to discover the boundaries of the discipline of architecture, which interrelates with many other disciplines. In order to explore architectural autonomy, this thesis explores the internal qualities of architecture with relation to the external ones. The scrutiny of these internal qualities is to direct architecture through its own realm and to discover its significant values and internal potentials. Architectural autonomy is explored in this thesis in the framework of Modern Movement. The technological inventions and the social and cultural developments are considered as influential forces in the discipline and practice of architecture. This study attempts to identify the concept autonomy, not as a property indicating to an architecture that is completely independent from its cultural environment, but as a value implying to architecture&rsquo / s interior qualities that are significant in the discipline&rsquo / s boundaries. Architecture is examined with relation to its cultural circumstances / by arguing that architecture is not only a part of culture but also one of the constituents of it. Besides fulfilling cultural values, architecture has the ability to transform culture, with its own internal values. In this regard, the issue of autonomy gains importance in maintaining architecture a cultural value.
