Quantitative interpretation of pulsed neutron capture logs : fast numerical simulation and inversion in thinly-bedded formations

Pulsed neutron capture (PNC) logs are commonly used for formation evaluation behind casing and to assess time-lapse variations of hydrocarbon pore volume. Because conventional interpretation methods for sigma logs assume homogeneous formations, errors may arise, especially in thinly-bedded formations, when appraising petrophysical properties of hydrocarbon-bearing beds. There exist no quantitative interpretation methods to account for shoulder-bed effects on sigma logs acquired in sand-shale laminated reservoirs. Because of diffusion effects between dissimilar beds, sigma logs acquired in such formations do not obey mixing laws between the sigma responses of pure-sand and pure-shale end members of the sedimentary sequence. We introduce a new numerical method to simulate rapidly and accurately PNC logs. The method makes use of late-time, thermal-neutron flux sensitivity functions (FSFs) to describe the contribution of multi-layer formations toward the measured capture cross section. It includes a correction procedure based on 1D neutron diffusion theory that adapts the transport-equation-derived, base-case FSF of a homogeneous formation to simulate the response of vertically heterogeneous formations. Benchmarking exercises indicate that our simulation method yields average differences smaller than 2 c.u. within seconds of CPU time with respect to PNC logs simulated with rigorous Monte Carlo methods for a wide range of geometrical, petrophysical, and fluid properties. We develop an inversion method to reduce shoulder-bed effects on pulsed neutron capture (PNC) logs in the estimation of layer-by-layer capture cross sections, Σ. The method is based on the previously developed rapid approximation of PNC logs. Tests performed on synthetic examples that include a variety of lithology, saturating-fluid, and bed-thickness configurations confirm the efficiency, reliability, and stability of the inversion procedure. Inversion consistently improves the vertical resolution and Σ definition of PNC logs across beds thinner than 45 cm. Our fast, iterative algorithm inverts sigma logs in seconds of CPU time, and is therefore suitable for joint petrophysical interpretation with other open- and cased-hole logs. / text

<p>The odd &ndash / odd Tl nuclei with A &ge / 190 have moderate oblate nuclear deformation and show rotational bands built on different quasiparticle excitations. Several phenomena, not yet fully understood, were observed in these nuclei, such as large signature splitting in the yrast band (built on a &pi / h9/2&otimes / &nu / i13/2 configuration), possible non &ndash / axiality of the nuclear shape, etc. In this work the high &ndash / spin states in 194Tl were studied. The 194Tl nuclei were produced in the 181Ta (18O, 5n) 194Tl reaction at a beam energy of 93 MeV and the &gamma / - rays were detected using the AFRODITE array. The obtained extended level scheme of 194Tl is presented and discussed in this work. CSM (Cranking shell model) and TRS (Total Routhians Surface) models were both applied to interpret the results for band 1. The results were compared with the neighboring isotone 193Hg.</p>

The cell survival curve is the only means by which to both qualitatively and quantitatively assess morphologic alterations directly resulting from in vitro irradiation of the cell. A ������Co cell survival curve experiment has successfully demonstrated the response of the AtT-20 clone mammalian cell line to the effects of gamma rays. With the results of this experiment, a low LET radiation cell survival curve now exists to be used as a comparative upon the completion of BNCT cell survival curves. / Graduation date: 1995

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND SYNTHETIC PROGRESS TOWARDS SMALL MOLECULES AS MODULATORS OF ANGIOGENESIS AT THE CELLULAR AND TRANSCRIPTIONAL LEVELS

Progress towards the design and the application of small molecules as inhibitors of angiogenesis is reported. First, the regulation of hypoxia inducible transcription with epipolythiodioxopiperazine (ETP) natural products is discussed, beginning with the exploration of the physical and chemical properties of ETP skeletal analogs, xylylene-linked bis-diketopiperazines (1,4-piperazine-2,5-diones, DKPs).The design, synthesis and solid-state structures of a new class of xylylene-linked bis(1,4-piperazine-2,5-diones) are reported in an effort to extend the molecular framework of piperazine-2,5-diones. These compounds were derived from piperazine-2,5-dione as the core structure, synthesized via a new efficient route, and their crystal structures were determined. We examined the effects of side chain substitution on conformations of the linked bis-DKPs in the solid state. The results suggested that the interplay between the attractive intermolecular interactions and repulsive steric interactions of the substituents at the C6 and C6' positions of the diketopiperazine rings is important in determining the solid-state conformations of xylylene-linked bis(piperazine-2,5-diones).Asymmetric alpha-sulfenylation reactions were designed and performed as a potential route to the synthesis of epipolythiodioxopiperazine natural products. First, a chiral auxiliary approach is reported, sulfenylating chiral azomethines of alpha-amino acids as epipolythiodiketopiperazine precursors in yields of 55% with de as high as 74%. Asymmetric organocatalytic alpha-sulfenylation of substituted piperazine-2,5-diones is also reported, with chiral cinchona alkaloids as bases and benzyl-substituted electrophilic sulfur transfer reagents. The reaction was investigated with varied catalyst loading, type of sulfenylating agent, temperature and solvent. The effects of ring substitution and type of catalyst on yield and enantioselectivity of the reaction are reported. The synthetic utility of the asymmetric alpha-sulfenylation in context of the synthesis of epipolythiodioxopiperazine fungal metabolites is discussed.Finally, chemical approach towards the inhibition of angiogenesis by targeting alpha v beta 3 integrin antagonists with synthetic multifunctional boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) integrin ligands is presented. The novel synthesis of an alpha v beta 3 integrin antagonist containing a free amine group for peripheral modification is reported, along with the preparation of a bifunctional BNCT integrin ligand and a trifunctional BNCT integrin ligand containing a fluorescent dye. Synthetic challenges and potential therapeutic applications of these ligands are discussed.
