News Magazine Use Of and Attitudes Toward Leaks in their Coverage of the Decline and Fall of Spiro T. Agnew

Fredd, James B. 08 1900 (has links)
This study is a content analysis of the coverage in Time, Newsweek, and U. S. News & World Report on Spiro Agnew from August 13 to October 22, 1973, and is concerned with the use of leaks as determined by analyzing the levels of attribution and the attitudes of the magazines toward leaks. All three magazines used approximately equivalent amounts of material from concealed sources. Time and Newsweek defended the use of leaks; U. S. News & World Report attacked their use. The perils inherent in using information from concealed sources make it necessary to consult as many sources as feasible when following a controversial story.

Projevy bulvarizace ve zpravodajství České televize v kontextu jeho oficiálních proměn / Tabloidization of Czech television news in the context of its official changes

Vysloužilová, Kristýna January 2015 (has links)
The tabloidization of the news is a term used more and more frequently when discussing the general decline of standards in media. And also when talking about the focus on the entertaining side of events or focus on rather simple topics in the news. The goal of the diploma thesis "Tabloidization of Czech television news in the context of its official changes" is to critically reflect the news produced by the Czech television considering the tabloidisation. It is particularly focused on the official changes from the years 2007 and 2012 and it compares the periods before and after the changes to determine what kind of effect they had on the tabloidization indicating elements. These elements are defined in the theoretical part of the diploma thesis which is mainly based on the foreign literature and which is looking closer on the different definitions of tabloidization and methods that are being used when trying to uncover the tabloidization in media content. Then, the essence of public service media is introduced, followed as well by the presentation of the Czech television as an institution. Also, the possible effects of tabloidization on the audience are discussed, considering its influence on the society as a whole. The attention is being paid to particular research questions and variables in the...

Archivace záběrů v redakcích zpravodajství a sportu České televize / Archiving of news and sport footage in the Czech TV

Ondrejčík, Gustav January 2019 (has links)
This thesis describes the process of archiving of shots and programmes in news and sport editorial offices of the Czech Television. Newsroom prepares broadcasts for ČT1 and ČT24 programmes. The sport editorial office provides the broadcasts for ČT SPORT and also prepares the news for "Branky, body, vteřiny" on ČT1. With regard to this, both offices produce a considerable amount of audio-visual material. The thesis examines how this material is subsequently archived. Do both offices have a systematic and comprehensive procedure for archiving of shots and programmes? And are these archives easily traceable, available and usable for further broadcasting? The thesis summarizes the history of archiving of news and sport audio-visual material. The key process of digitization, which allows the transcription and saving of old archive materials stored on tape media, is also mentioned. After describing the history of archiving, the author focuses on the current methodology of the process and describes the system of archiving in news and sports news. Who does archiving and what systems and programmes are used for it? At the end of this thesis the future of archiving is analysed with regard to the progress in technologies used for archiving.

A quantitative content analysis of a regional and a local news programme

Johansson, Rebecka, Tokic, Zeljka January 2007 (has links)
Our aim with the essay is to see how local and regional two news programmes are and which news they prioritize. The chosen programmes are TV4Nyheterna Jönköping and SVT Smålandsnytt. We will look into the differences between those two, when it comes to the type of elements, but also the difference in how long the elements are (in terms of time).</p><p>The material we chose where the news summary 09.55 pm from TV4Nyheterna Jönköping and the news summary 10.15 pm from SVT SmålandsNytt, for three weeks. The reason why we chose news summaries is because we want to see what the channels consider are the most important events during the day, witch news where worth summarize.</p><p>The selected method is quantitative content analysis. We chose that because we wanted to examine statistically measurable variables, as time, different matters in the elements and numbers elements by the municipality. Since it is statistical fact it suits best to count quantitatively. The analysis has been done with the aid of a code book and code forms.</p><p>The results showed that TV4Nyheterna Jönköping had centralization to consignments place, Jönköping. But when it comes to SmålandsNytt, they did not have any centralization to the consignments place, instead Jönköping dominated here also. We consider that this can to do the with murder of a student that has been reported a lot about in the programmes. When it came to the time length of the elements that dominated in both of the news programmes where 16-30 seconds and the most common matters where criminal/accidents. According to Hadenius and Weibull are criminal/accidents one of the most primary readings at the newspaper readers. Our results did not show on some big differences in our two news programmes, SmålandsNytt and TV4Nyheterna Jönköping.</p>

The coverage of death in the foreign news of German and Australian quality newspapers

Hanusch, Folker Unknown Date (has links)
This study investigates the values that the print media place on human lives in an international context. This was conducted by examining the coverage of death in international news. Although the research literature shows a number of studies that examined the coverage of death, this particular study differs from previous studies because all such previous research has had either a narrow focus or shortcomings in their research methods. In this context, this study is a comprehensive evaluation of how newspapers cover death in foreign news. By focussing on quality newspapers in Germany and Australia, namely the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Süddeutsche, The Australian and the Sydney Morning Herald, the study identified the differences in the coverage of death in these newspapers. In particular the study examined whether these newspapers gave preference in any form to reports of death from countries that were culturally similar as opposed to countries that were culturally dissimilar countries. The study further examined and highlighted the basis on which journalists in Germany and Australia made news decisions about whether or not to cover foreign events that included death and what criteria informed their news decisions. By applying a cultural framework developed especially for the purpose of examining international news, the study found clear evidence that journalists primarily look for a cultural connection to their own country in making news judgments in regard to foreign news coverage. The framework used in this study was based on the following four cultural dimensions: world views, value systems, systems of social organisation and systems of symbolic representation. In this regard, an event in which a large number of people have died, but which is located in a country that does not have many links along these dimensions with the newspaper’s home country will not necessarily rate very highly. In contrast, an event involving a few dead people would rate highly if the event occurred in a country with which the newspaper’s home country has many links along the four dimensions. In this regard, issues such as news fatigue, also called compassion fatigue, can be overcome by a cultural connection to another country. Differences in how German and Australian quality newspapers treated stories about foreign death, both in the use of language and the use of photographs, were also examined in detail. In this regard, Australian newspapers were found to display relatively more tabloid characteristics than German newspapers, with clear differences in the language used when describing death. Differences in the use of graphic photographs were not as clear, though distinctions could still be made to a certain degree across national lines. In general, journalists’ approaches to how they treated death could also be traced back to some distinct cultural differences between Germany and Australia.

It demonstrates, through the examination of case studies by Reuters TV and APTN, how the global news ecosystem functions, geared towards the broadcasting stations. This thesis carefully examines how this ecosystem behaves faced with the impact of the development of new media deriving from the web. It shows how the development of network digital technology led to editorial and logistical changes in the productive routine within the agencies, seen in this study as globalization&#8223;s important social actors. Upon charting the agencies&#8223; commercial and structural dynamics, the hypothesis upheld here is that the vast majority of the news transmitted by these companies is determined by the political and economic interests of their biggest clients, which leads us to ratify, even today, 30 years after UNESCO&#8223;s McBride Report was published, that there is still a great asymmetry in the international news in which countries, regions and subject matters are neglected and excluded. By looking upon the content of both agencies&#8223; output, the author concludes that western-led news agencies now appear to report an expressive number of stories dedicated to Asia. This thesis also claims that the bulk of their content is fed with news related to The United States and Western Europe. It shows that during dramatic and catastrophic media events, Reuters TV and APTN reassure their symbolic role by selling the idea of their news: unbiased, with accountability, diversity of themes and social actors. In these same events, news agencies also reinforce their role by organizing and packing the news. They also feed the global news system with constancy, speed and security.
