Topographic Effects in Strong Ground MotionRai, Manisha 14 September 2015 (has links)
Ground motions from earthquakes are known to be affected by earth's surface topography. Topographic effects are a result of several physical phenomena such as the focusing or defocusing of seismic waves reflected from a topographic feature and the interference between direct and diffracted seismic waves. This typically causes an amplification of ground motion on convex features such as hills and ridges and a de-amplification on concave features such as valleys and canyons. Topographic effects are known to be frequency dependent and the spectral accelerations can sometimes reach high values causing significant damages to the structures located on the feature. Topographically correlated damage pattern have been observed in several earthquakes and topographic amplifications have also been observed in several recorded ground motions. This phenomenon has also been extensively studied through numerical analyses. Even though different studies agree on the nature of topographic effects, quantifying these effects have been challenging. The current literature has no consensus on how to predict topographic effects at a site. With population centers growing around regions of high seismicity and prominent topographic relief, such as California, and Japan, the quantitative estimation of the effects have become very important. In this dissertation, we address this shortcoming by developing empirical models that predict topographic effects at a site. These models are developed through an extensive empirical study of recorded ground motions from two large strong-motion datasets namely the California small to medium magnitude earthquake dataset and the global NGA-West2 datasets, and propose topographic modification factors that quantify expected amplification or deamplification at a site.
To develop these models, we required a parameterization of topography. We developed two types of topographic parameters at each recording stations. The first type of parameter is developed using the elevation data around the stations, and comprise of parameters such as smoothed slope, smoothed curvature, and relative elevation. The second type of parameter is developed using a series of simplistic 2D numerical analysis. These numerical analyses compute an estimate of expected 2D topographic amplification of a simple wave at a site in several different directions. These 2D amplifications are used to develop a family of parameters at each site. We study the trends in the ground motion model residuals with respect to these topographic parameters to determine if the parameters can capture topographic effects in the recorded data. We use statistical tests to determine if the trends are significant, and perform mixed effects regression on the residuals to develop functional forms that can be used to predict topographic effect at a site. Finally, we compare the two types of parameters, and their topographic predictive power. / Ph. D.

L’objectif de ces travaux de thèse est la conception et le développement d’un système de caractérisation tridimensionnelle de pièces forgées de grande dimension portées à haute température. Les travaux se basent sur de nombreuses thématiques telles que l’acquisition tridimensionnelle, l’extraction, la segmentation et le recalage de primitives 3D. Nous présentons tout d’abord les limites des systèmes de caractérisation de pièces forgées cités dans la littérature. Dans la deuxième partie, nous présentons la réalisation du système de caractérisation de pièces forgées, constitué de deux scanners temps de vol (TOF). Nous présentons également le simulateur de numérisation par scanner TOF qui nous permet de nous affranchir des contraintes industrielles (temps, difficulté de manœuvres) pour positionner les deux scanners. La troisième partie est consacrée à l’extraction des primitives 3D. Nous avons traité deux types de primitives : viroles et sphères avec deux approches différentes : méthode supervisée et méthode automatique. La première approche basée sur une méthode de croissance de région et de contour actif, permet d’extraire des formes extrudées complexes. Des problèmes d’ergonomie du système nous ont conduits à développer une deuxième approche, basée sur l’image de Gauss et l’extraction d’ellipse, qui permet l’extraction automatique de formes cylindriques ovales ou circulaires. Nous présentons également quatre méthodes d’extraction automatique de sphères basées sur des approches heuristiques : RANSAC (RANdom SAmple Consensus), algorithme génétique et algorithme génétique par niche. Dans la quatrième partie, nous étudions les différentes approches de recalage de données 3D traitées : le calibrage basé sur les cibles artificielles et le recalage fin basé sur l’algorithme ICP. Pour conclure, nous présentons la réalisation d’un système complet de caractérisation tridimensionnelle de pièces forgées de grande dimension. Ensuite, nous comparons les performances et les limites de ce système avec les systèmes de caractérisation cités dans la littérature. / The main objective of this Phd project is to conceive a machine vision system for hot cylindrical metallic shells diameters measurement during forging process. The manuscript is structured by developing in the first chapter the state of the art and the limits of hot metallic shells measurement systems suggested in literature. Our implemented system which is based on two conventional Time Of Flight (TOF) laser scanners has been described in the same chapter along, chapter two, with presentation of its respective numerical simulator. Simulation series have been done using the digitizing simulator and were aimed to determine the optimal positions of the two scanners without any industrial constraints (time, difficulty of operations). The third part of the manuscript copes with 3D primitives extraction. Two major types of approaches have been studied according to the primitive’s form (cylinders or spheres) to be extracted: supervised method and automatic method. The first approach, based on a growing region method and active contour, enables to extract complex extruded forms; while problems of ergonomics have been solved using automatic methods that have been carried out along the programme research. The proposed methods consist in automatically extracting: oval or circular cylindrical forms, using Gauss map associated with ellipse extraction techniques : spherical forms, using heuristic approaches such as RANdom SAmple Consensus RANSAC, Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Niche Genetic Algorithm (NGA). Two varieties of 3D data registration approach have been presented and discussed in chapter 4: the registration based on the artificial targets and the fine registration based on algorithm ICP. A complete system for three-dimensional characterization of hot cylindrical metallic shells during forging process has been implemented and then compared with existing systems in order to identify its performances and limits in conclusion.

This thesis will discuss the development of the Internet. The first part of the thesis will describe the development of the Internet both world wide and in the Czech Republic. The following part will analyse the quality of the high-speed Internet and its coverage accord-ing to government legislation concerning high-speed Internet. This legislation is a part of the plan "Europe 2020". The following part will describe the method used for measuring of the Internet speed and analyse the current statistics data of the Internet speed. Those data will be analysed to find out good and bad sides of the statistics. Some other interesting facts will be presented in the thesis. The following chapter will answer the question why those figures are important and what kind of influence those figures have for regular users. The last part will present my own measurements of the Internet speed in Czech Republic. The thesis will also answer the question about how users of Internet in Czech Republic perceive the real speed of the Internet and its coverage in all regions.

Vaccinia virus (VACV) is an enveloped DNA virus, member of the Orthopoxviridae genus. VACV genome size is about 200 kbp. This huge genome capacity allows VACV to encode a set of factors that are non-essential for virus replication and spread in vitro. While these factors are needed for interfering with host immune responses, VACV remains strongly immunogenic. Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in atopic disorders are deregulated to a certain extent, leading to complications in case of infection or vaccination with vaccines based on replicating viruses, such as eczema vaccinatum caused by VACV. VACV effects on immune responses consist among others in the inhibition of expression of type I interferon (IFN) at various levels - for example in a specific inhibition of phosphorylation of the interferon regulatory factor-3 (IRF-3) via inhibition of the activity of TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK 1) that normally phosphorylates IRF-3. Phosphorylation allows IRF-3 to translocate into the nucleus where it initiates transcription of IFNβ followed by induction of expression of IFN and interferon stimulated genes. Expression of these genes is shut down when IRF-3 activity is inhibited. To overcome this block, a recombinant VACV expressing murine IRF-3 under VACV p7.5 promotor (WR-IRF3) was generated....

controversial que introduce la reforma tributaria chilena (Ley Nº 20.780 y Ley Nº 20.899)
como lo es nuestra primera Norma General Antielusión (en adelante, también, “NGA”).
Dado que este tipo de cláusula es nueva en la legislación chilena, es menester analizarla
desde un punto de vista comparado, de modo tal de poder conocer la institución, entender
cómo ha funcionado en otros países y si ha sido una buena herramienta para poder reforzar
el cumplimiento tributario. Este trabajo tiene como pretensión, entonces, poder conocer la
institución de la NGA en sí y su aplicabilidad a través de un análisis de jurisprudencia
comparada y posterior revisión de la legislación nacional, de manera de poder determinar si
podría convertirse en una herramienta útil para hacer frente a la elusión tributaria. Aquello
implica adentrarse en su vinculación con conceptos como elusión, evasión y planificación
tributaria, conocer cómo se han implementado en otros países cláusulas de este tipo, tanto
de tradición de Common Law como de Derecho Continental, y cómo ha sido aplicada por
los Tribunales de Justicia de esos países. Esto nos permitirá entender la institución de la
NGA de acuerdo a sus fines y propósitos, permitiéndonos determinar si su incorporación al
derecho chileno será beneficiosa en cuanto herramienta antielusiva de acuerdo a la aplicación
de la misma en el extranjero.
