A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Engineering in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology in Mechanical Engineering 2005 / The objective of this project was to monitor the high temperature creep behaviour of 441 stainless steel. Two different alloys of 441 were investigated; the main difference between them being the Niobium content. Particularly imporlant to the project was how the Niobium content and grain size affected the creep resistance of the material. Creep tests were performed using purpose built constant load creep test rigs. Initially the rigs were not suitable for the testing procedures pertaining to this project. This was due to persistent problems being experienced with regards the reliability and reproducibility of the rigs. After various modifications were made the results produced from the rigs were consistent. Creep test data was used in order to determine the mechanism of creep that is operative within the material (at a predetermined temperature) under a predetermined load. Particular attention was paid to the resulting stress exponents. in order to identify the operative creep mechanism. The identification of the operative creep mechanisms was also aided by microscopical analysis. This analysis was also necessary to monitor how the grain size had altered at various annealing temperatures. Heat treatment was used as a method to alter the high temperature strength and microstructure of the material. Heat treatments were performed at various temperatures in order to determine the ideal temperature to promote optimum creep resistance of 441. All heat treatments were performed in a purpose designed and built high temperature salt bath furnace. The commissioning of the salt bath formed part of the objectives for this project. Sag testing was also conducted, using purpose built sag test rigs. It was necessary to design and manufacture a sag test rig that could be comparable to the industry accepted method of sag testing known as the two-point beam method, as this method is believed to produce inconsistent results. Conclusions have been drawn from the results of the data and from previous research on the subject matter.

As propriedades mecânicas de metais com estrutura cristalina cúbica de corpo centrado (CCC), tais como nióbio e suas ligas, são alteradas de forma bastante significativa com a adição de elementos intersticiais pesados. Estes elementos intersticiais (oxigênio, nitrogênio e carbono) presentes na matriz metálica ocupam sítios octaedrais e constituem um dipolo elástico de simetria tetragonal, podendo produzir relaxações anelásticas. As amostras utilizadas foram policristais da liga Nb-Ti, contendo 0,3% em peso de Ti. As medidas de espectroscopia anelástica foram efetuadas usando um pêndulo de torção invertido, operando com freqüência da ordem de hertz, em um intervalo de temperatura entre 300 e 700 K, com taxa de aquecimento de 1 K/min. Esta dissertação apresenta estruturas de relaxação termicamente ativadas observadas em amostras da liga Nb - 0,3%pTi, contendo diferentes concentrações de oxigênio em solução sólida. Estas estruturas de relaxação foram atribuídas à reorientação induzida por tensão de átomos intersticiais em tomo de átomos da matriz metálica. Tais estruturas foram analisadas e foram encontrados os seguintes processos de relaxação: Nb-O, Ti-O, Nb-N e Nb-C. Os resultados mostraram também uma relação direta entre as intensidades das estruturas de relaxação e a concentração dos elementos intersticiais presentes nas amostras. / The mechanical properties of metals with body centered cubic (BCC) crystalline structure such as Nb and its alloys are modified of sufficiently significant form with the addition of heavy interstitial elements. These interstitial elements (oxygen, for example) present in the metallic matrix occupy octahedral sites and constitute an elastic dipole of tetragonal symmetry, being able to produce an elastic relaxation. The used samples were polycrystals of the Nb-Ti alloy, having 0.3 % in weight of Ti. The an elastic spectroscopy measurements were taken using an inverted torsion pendulum, operating with frequency of the order of hertz, in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K, with heating rate of 1 K/min. This dissertation shows thermally activated relaxation structures observed in samples of the Nb - 0.3wt.%Ti alloy, having different concentrations of oxygen in solid solution. These relaxation structures were attributed to stress induced ordering of interstitial atoms around the metallic matrix atoms. Such structures were analyzed and were found the following relaxation processes: Nb-O, Ti-O, Nb-N and Nb-C. The results had also shown a direct relation between the intensities of the relaxation structures and the concentration of interstitial elements in the samples.

Mechanical properties of Nb-Ti composite superconducting wires

Mechanical properties of Nb-Ti composite superconducting wires were tested at room temperature. The results were analysed using simple composite theory, the rule of mixtures. The objective is to predict the mechanical properties of Nb-Ti superconducting composite wires as a function of volume ratio and geometry of the components, the composite wire size and the effect of heat treatment at final drawing wire sizes. To understand the mechanical behaviors of the Nb-Ti composite, mechanical testing of the individual composite components, Nb-Ti filament and copper matrix, was performed, and the geometry of the composite was also studied. The results indicate that for the monofilamentary composite simple composite theory with two components, Nb-Ti filament and copper matrix, can be used as the prediction of the UTS of the composite. For the multifilamentary composite three components make up the composites; a high strength Nb-Ti fiber, a low strength, high ductility bulk copper matrix and a mid-strength (between the Nb-Ti fiber's and bulk copper matrix's) interfilamentary copper matrix. After heavy cold work the UTS of Nb-Ti filaments and bulk copper matrix in the composite saturate, while the UTS of the interfilamentary copper increases as the interfilamentary spacing decreases. The UTS of the interfilamentary copper matrix as a linear function of the reciprocal of interfilamentary spacing is found. The controlling parameters in the manufacturing which determine the mechanical properties of Nb-Ti composite superconducting wires include superconductor to composite ratio, UTS of the Nb-Ti filament and copper matrix, wire final drawing size, and geometry of the composite such as size and number of the filaments, interfilamentary spacing, volume fraction of fringe and core bulk copper in multifilamentary composites. / Graduation date: 1991
