Este trabalho analisa a História da Grande Revolução (1933), do historiador Alfredo Varella (1864-1943). A obra é uma das mais copiosas a respeito da guerra civil farroupilha e traz em sua escrita comparações explícitas com o épos clássico das poesias homéricas e modulações típicas do padrão de epopéia. A despeito da enfática opção do autor pelos preceitos de uma história científica, Varella narrou a Revolução Farroupilha como a “Guerra da Nova Troya”, numa história que almejava ser científica ao mesmo tempo em que ostentava cores épicas. O trabalho procura explorar essa aparentemente contraditória relação, debatendo, para isso, teorias da historiografia, apreciações sobre o gênero épico e algumas reflexões do âmbito da filosofia hermenêutica. / This study analyses the História da Grande Revolução (1933), written by Alfredo Varella (1864- 1943). The work is one of the most copious about the “farroupilha” civil war and brings in his writing explicit comparisons with the classic épos of the Homeric poems and modulations typical of the epic pattern. Despite the emphatic author's choice by the precepts of scientific history, Varella narrated the “Revolução Farroupilha” as the “New War of Troy”, in a history that longed to be scientific while sported epic colors. The work explores this seemingly contradictory relationship, arguing for this, theories of historiography, assessments of the epic genre and some reflections from the scope of philosophical hermeneutics.
