Student physiotherapists' narratives and the construction of professional identities

Chambers, Alison January 2012 (has links)
Drawing upon the biographical narratives of eight student physiotherapists and situated within an interpretive paradigm this thesis has explored the construction of professional identities within physiotherapy education. It has been predicated upon notions of identity as constructed through social interactions, therefore a relational concept requiring interaction, enactment and reciprocity. It took place within a contemporary professional context epitomised by increasing interprofessionalism challenging notions of what being a physiotherapist means. The main findings of this study suggest that student physiotherapists enter physiotherapy education (or very soon after, develop) with a well formed idea of what being a physiotherapist means, constructing an idealised professional self. This idealised professional self becomes the lens through which they subsequently experience and evaluate their professional education experiences. The process of constructing professional identities involves student physiotherapists in a continuous cycle of performance, mediation and impression management, through which they seek opportunities to confirm their idealised professional self. The findings of this thesis suggest that student physiotherapists exercise individual agency to construct socially and spatially situated professional identities in everyday professional interaction and supports contemporary notions of professional socialisation as interactive. This thesis contributes to the contemporary understanding of the process of identity construction. Theoretically, it emphasises the concept of role models and highlights the importance of anti-role models or disidentification. Practically, it offers physiotherapy educators the opportunity to reconsider the complexities of professional identity and its place within the learning context. Finally, for the students who took part in this study telling their stories has rendered their experiences with meaning and their stories have the capacity to become important cultural tools for future students.

Living with chronic illness : a biographical analysis of a family's account

Arnfield, Susan Mary January 2011 (has links)
It has been estimated that by the year 2014 there will be a 12 per cent increase in the number of adults with at least one chronic illness condition (Carrier, 2009). The turn to caring for those with a chronic illness at home has resulted in carers having an increased risk of developing health problems (Ohman & Soderberg, 2004). As such there is a need to understand how families manage and cope with illness at home. This study has examined the effect chronic illness had on not only the woman with illness, but also the immediate family closely involved with her care. Additionally the study has sought to address the effect chronic illness had on the 'self' and 'identity' of these three women and to determine what extent and impact the illness process had on the relationships within this family. The study used open-ended biographic narrative interviews to elicit data. The research revealed that each woman experienced change and loss to both 'self' and 'identity' albeit in different ways. Interestingly and of significance is the way these women in their narrative accounts revisited their past lives in implicating and accounting for the present and the future (Freeman 2010). It was discovered that the past history and past relationships of these women affected how they each responded to illness and each other in their present circumstances.

An exploration of community neuropsychological rehabilitation following acquired brain injury : psychosocial outcomes and narratives of identity

Cook, Rohan January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: High intensity holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation is the most evidenced-based intervention for post-acute ABI rehabilitation. However, the majority of the current evidence has examined inpatient or residential treatment contexts. Little is known about the efficacy of community neuropsychological rehabilitation interventions or the clinical validity of both high and low intensity forms of rehabilitation in a community rehabilitation setting. The systematic review synthesises the existing evidence for community-based holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation and its psycho-social outcomes. Changes in self and group identity have been suggested to underpin evidence-based neuropsychological rehabilitation. However, little is known about how these processes of identity change following ABI and throughout the rehabilitation process. The empirical study explores key turning points in the self-narratives of individuals with ABI in order to better understand the clinical and contextual factors which influence their rehabilitation. Methods: A search was conducted of Embase, Embase classic, Medline and PsycInfo. Studies were assessed for risk of bias and outcomes were synthesised following the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. A ‘holistic-content’ narrative methodology was then employed to explore the post-acute adjustment and rehabilitation narratives of 11 individuals following ABI. Three-dimensional analysis of interaction, continuity and situation was used to examine individuals’ personal reflections of identity changes across their illness experience; and cross-case comparisons identified common transformational themes. Results: 15 studies were included in the review. Two distinct levels of intervention intensity were identified: high intensity interventions delivered multiple days per week, and low intensity interventions delivered only once a week. A synthesis of nine studies examining high intensity neuropsychological rehabilitation found evidence that these interventions can improve psychological wellbeing and enhance community integration following ABI when delivered on an outpatient basis. A synthesis of six low intensity interventions found limited evidence that they can lead to improved psycho-social outcomes when structure to target specific difficulties, and evidence that they can effectively support the achievement of individual patient goals. Following the analysis of ABI survivor narratives, themes of ‘Rehabilitation focus and psychological distress’, ‘Reclaiming efficacy in valued life domains’, and ‘Social comparisons: inclusion and exclusion’ were identified; each representing a continuum of personal and social understanding along which people moved during their rehabilitation. Conclusions: The systematic review suggested that high intensity forms of outpatient neuropsychological rehabilitation are effective at improving psycho-social outcomes. Low intensity forms of outpatient neuropsychological rehabilitation appear to offer a less favourable alternative to supporting psycho-social adjustment in the community at present. Findings from the empirical paper suggest that illness identity may be co-constructed in the context of early treatment experiences, and appears to influence post-acute rehabilitation focus; and that pre-injury values and self-identity guided participant approaches to re-establishing self-efficacy. These processes were supported by clinical, social and group interactions.

The construction of exodus identity in the texts of ancient Israel : a social identity approach

Stargel, Linda January 2016 (has links)
In response to the scarcity of biblical scholarship analysing the function of the Hebrew Bible’s exodus stories as persuasive communication, this dissertation investigates how these mnemonically dense stories were capable of creating and maintaining a long-term collective identity for ancient Israel. A narrative approach is selected in keeping with this intent, and the primary exodus story (Exod 1:1–15:21) and the 18 retold exodus stories found in the Hebrew Bible are identified as the focus of research. Since the tools used for analysing the narratives of non-fictional peoples need not be limited to those used for analysing literary fiction, a methodological tool—based on the principles of the social identity approach (SIA)—is developed and outlined to assist in exposing identity construction at a rhetorical level. Using the SIA heuristic tool, rhetorical formulations of identity—cognitive, evaluative, emotional, behavioural and temporal—like those occurring in face-to-face relationships, are identified in the exodus stories. These formulations make certain identity claims upon their hearers. A shared experience of oppression and deliverance is represented as the significant feature defining group membership in Israel. The literary portrayal of nine of the eighteen retold exodus stories in a setting just after the death of the adult exodus generation, asserts the importance of the appropriation of the story by a purportedly new generation. Likewise, exodus narratives with a literary setting in every major socio-cultural transition in Israel’s larger story portray Israel’s rehearsal of and participation in exodus as central and essential to her ongoing collective identity. Possible social identities offered to Israel include the temporal expansion of this ingroup based on the retelling and reappropriation of exodus and the “othering” of Israel based on non-compliance. Pre-exodus narratives are noted to have been shaped so as to include the patriarchs in “the people whom God brought out of Egypt.” Plurivocal retold exodus stories also reflects the recasting of narratives to fit identities so that, anachronistically, post-exodus members may also be included in “the people whom God brought out of Egypt.” This points to the revision and reuse of exodus narratives rather than to their unilinear development. Apart from any speculation on the historical motives of their producers, the identity-forming potential of exodus narratives characterized by the well-established, recognizable language of social identity is identified. The newly developed heuristic tool used in this analysis is its most significant contribution. It makes visible the nascent social identity language and concepts implicitly noted by prior scholarship, places them within the larger validating theoretical framework of the SIA and systematically identifies the specific persuasive elements and integrating qualities of exodus narratives.

Linguagem e cultura na construção da identidade do sem-terra / Language and culture in the construction of landless identity

Zacchi, Vanderlei José 27 November 2009 (has links)
Access to power in nowadays society can be gained through the control over discourse practices made possible by the use of two powerful tools: the English language and the new technologies of communication. That is true also for social movements around the world, especially the MST, Brazils Landless Workers Movement. However, by making use of these tools, the MST may jeopardize its own identity, since they are usually related to its opponents (or its Others). This work examines the identity conflicts stemming from MSTs use of English and new technologies in the articulation of local and global resistance against cultural, political and social hegemonic forces, taking into consideration the context in which the movement operates and in which its identity is constructed. It is based on four main themes: identity, culture, languages and new technologies. Culture and identity are everchanging concepts. Languages and new technologies cannot be seen as mere tools. They take an active role in the construction of the landless identity. Likewise, they are strictly tied to culture. Therefore, an emphasis on conflicts may be useful for the promotion of reflections and reconsiderations on the concepts of language, culture and identity. Globalisation and nationalism are themes that also received considerable attention, since the MST produces a strong discourse in favour of national culture and traditions, which, on the other hand, is gradually being challenged by the cultural and economic globalisation in course nowadays. Other aspects analysed in this work involve narrative, religion and ambientalism. The research concluded that conflicts and contradictions, in the actions as well as in the selfrepresentation of the landless, are useful for enhancing the plurality of the movement and they both reflect and shape the landless identity. The corpus is comprised of a selection of texts from the movements official website and from electronic bulletins and newsletters sent by the MST and other groups related to it. Text is understood here as being multimodal, so that images as well as other modes of meaning-making were examined. Printed texts were also analyzed, especially those from the MSTs publications: Revista Sem Terra, a bimonthly magazine, and Jornal Sem Terra, a monthly newspaper. Other sources were also adopted: interviews with members of the movement and a field diary based on visits to MST settlements, offices and demonstrations.

"Zákon o holocaustu" a obrana polských dějin za vlády PiS / 'The Holocaust Law' and the defence of Polish history under the PiS government

Marková, Lucie January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to describe two central narratives of the Holocaust in the collective memory of Poland on the example of the clash of these narratives in one of the biggest debates in Polish history, triggered by the publication of Jan Tomasz Gross's book Neighbours in 2000. The first attempt to focus legislatively on those who do not follow the official narrative of the past of the Holocaust, was the creation of "Lex Gross" in 2006 during the first period of the reign of the right-wing conservative political party PiS. In 2018, the proposed legislation was elaborated into an Amendment to the Act on the IPN, known as "Holocaust Law" which had provoked a great controversy. The aim of this one-case study of the amendment is to present the motives for the amendment and explain the controversy it provoked within the framework of politics of memory of PiS. The amendment is interpreted in the context of different narratives of Holocaust, so-called memory wars - that means in the collective memories of the national states on the one hand, and of transnational acteurs on the other. Thus, memory may become the subject of populism, which heralds the disintegration of the neoliberal consensus.
