Ringström, Daniel January 2018 (has links)
Like other municipal waste collectors in Sweden, Gästrike Återvinnare have in recent years implemented measures to climb up the waste hierarchy and reduce the environmental impact of waste. No quantitative longitudinal study of the climate benefits of these measures have previously been conducted. What change of environmental impact can be quantitatively demonstrated from these measures? How effective have the measures been and why? The overall purpose of this study is to evaluate the environmental impact of waste collected in the Swedish region of Gästrikland and how it has evolved over time. Finally, recommendations are formulated for reduced environmental impact from waste. The climate impact from waste management was calculated using statistics of collected waste combined with life-cycle data obtained through literature study of previously conducted studies. The geographical delimitation of the study covers the municipal waste management in the municipality of Gävle and Gästrike Återvinnare. The environmental impact category chosen in this study is potential contribution to global warming, expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). The study is limited to statistics from 2001 to 2016 and the waste fractions mixed household waste, combustible residual waste, food waste, packaging, corrugated board and electrical waste. During the surveyed period, the climate impact of the investigated fractions went from a net value of 78 kg CO2e per person in 1991, i.e. the emissions from the waste treatment were greater than the potentially avoided emissions from alternative production of materials and energy. By 2016 the net value was -100 kg CO2e per person and year, the potentially avoided climate impact exceeded the impact that the waste management causes. The most important change in terms of climate impact was the cessation of land filling of mixed household waste. Important was also the expanded recycling of newspapers, packaging and electrical waste. A sensitivity analysis was conducted where a scenario with alternative life cycle data for climate impact was tested for the fractions with the largest impact on the result. Based on the sensitivity analysis, it can be confirmed that the waste management system has achieved a lower climate impact during the period. However, this study can not reliable state whether the net value of the waste management's climate impact has reached negative values or is close to zero. The ban on landfilling of combustible household waste and the introduction of producer responsibility have both proved to be effective means of reducing the environmental impact of waste. Despite the improvements, it can be noted that the biggest changes regarding volume have occurred in the lower steps of the waste hierarchy. An important challenge in waste management is to find and implement effective measures for the higher steps in the waste hierarchy.

Solar heat pump systems for heating applications : Analysis of system performance and possible solutions for improving system performance

Poppi, Stefano January 2017 (has links)
Solar heat pump systems (SHPs) are systems that combine solar energy and heat pumps. SHPs have been investigated for several decades and have been proven to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce electric energy demand in residential heating applications. Many solar thermal heat pump systems have become market-available in recent years; however these systems are still not widely employed in the residential sector. This is due mainly to the high initial costs (investment and installation costs) of solar thermal heat pump systems, which limits their cost-effectiveness. Enhancing cost-effectiveness of solar thermal heat pump systems is necessary for a more effective and broader market penetration. In this thesis, solar thermal and photovoltaic systems combined with heat pumps for heating applications are treated. The overall aims of the thesis are to: 1) investigate techno-economics of SHPs and 2) investigate possible solutions for improving system performance of a reference solar thermal and heat pump system for residential heating applications. In the first part of the thesis, the influence of climatic boundary conditions on economic performance of SHPs has been investigated by means of: a) an economic comparison of SHPs found in the relevant literature and b) system simulations of the reference solar thermal heat pump system. In the second part of the thesis, potential solutions for improving system performance of the reference solar thermal heat pump system with limited change in system’ costs are investigated. A systematic approach was used for investigating cost-effectiveness of the system improvements in the reference system. Based on results of the cost-effectiveness analysis, some of the investigated system improvements were chosen for being included in the design of a novel solar thermal and air source heat pump system concept. The novel system was designed for a house standard with relatively high operating temperatures (55°C/45°C) in the space heating distribution system and for high space heating demand (123 kWh/m2·year). Finally, the thesis ends with a cost-effectiveness analysis of the novel system.

Can new treatment combinations make sewage sludge management more sustainable?

Bauer, Torben January 2021 (has links)
Treated sewage sludge is often reused as a fertilizer but several European countries are phasing out this option due to concerns about harmful substances in the sludge. Valuables in the sludge should still be recycled so the removal of the pollutants is necessary. The technology in sewage sludge treatment remained nearly unchanged in the past century. Adapting traditional treatments and combining them with upcoming ones can be a way to separate substances in sewage sludge. This work discusses examples of how treatment methods can be combined and which potential these treatment combinations may have. New tools for system analyses need to be developed to allow the integration and adaption of treatments into existing infrastructure.

An Investigation Of Development Pathways For An Economically Viable Seafarm Cultivation At The Kosterfjorden, Sweden

Thomas, Jean-Baptiste January 2013 (has links)
New opportunities for sustainable economic development have emerged from the transdisciplinary collaboration of aquaculture and biotechnology. As a response to the European Commission’s call for a European Bioeconomy, SEAFARM, a five-year program pending funding from FORMAS, aims to develop a sustainable aquaculture as a milieu for and in support of further research in blue biotechnology in five collaborating institutions in Sweden. This thesis aims to explore aquaculture technologies, notably IMTA and long-line systems, established and emerging seaweed-based products, the proposed Kostefjorden site, a case study of a similar project in Scotland, BioMara, and some other technological and socio-economic hurdles that will affect the SEAFARM cultivation - all to enable the development of two economically viable but contrasting scenarios for the cultivation. Scenario ONE represents a BioMara inspired cultivation optimised for the industrial production of biofuel feedstock, while scenario TWO explores the potential of a small-scale and diverse IMTA cultivation. These scenarios were cross-referenced against the scenario context criteria. The final result indicated scenario TWO, the small-scale diversified IMTA, would be a more adaptable and economically resilient option, delivering a greater variety of species for biotechnological scrutiny, potential for a diverse and specialised range of products and revenues, while also optimising the conditions necessary for the pursuit of SEAFARM research objectives, notably through the development of the first IMTA in Sweden.

LCA of Egg Phospholipids / LCA av Äggfosfolipider

Berggren, Anders January 2013 (has links)
Egg phospholipids are a group of fats or lipids in the egg yolk, commonly used as emulsifiers in the chemical industry to facilitate the dissolving of substances. The pharmaceutical company Fresenius-Kabi manufactures this product and seeks a better understanding of the product’s major environmental impacts in order to comply with the ISO 14001 requirements, communicate its environmental performance and choose raw materials that result in lower environmental impacts. The aim of this study is to quantify and identify environmental impacts that occur in the life cycle of Fresenius-Kabi’s egg phospholipids product, and to suggest improvements on how the impacts could be reduced. The aim has been reached by following the life cycle assessment methodology. The life cycle consists of egg, egg yolk powder and egg phospholipids production. The major inputs to the life cycle include fertilizers, pesticides, hen feed, fuel oil and solvents. The major outputs are hen manure, egg residues, air and water emissions. The results show that the greatest impacts are generated in the production of hen feed, solvent feedstocks, the hen manure handing and the final egg phospholipids production. The most severe environmental impacts are found in the human toxicity and eutrophication impact categories. Pesticide and fertilizers usage in the cultivation of hen feed and solvent feedstocks generate phosphorus, manganese and arsenic emissions, which are emission substance sources in the human toxicity impact category. In addition, nitrate and phosphate emissions from fertilizer and hen manure affect the eutrophication. The emissions of NMVOC and carbon dioxide to air, as well as phosphorus to waste water, are the major environmental concerns in the final egg phospholipids manufacturing. Other impact categories such as climate change, photochemical oxidant formation, terrestrial acidification and fossil depletion have lower global impact. Five scenarios have been conducted in order to validate the results, and to provide Fresenius-Kabi with improvements. Lowering the production and intake of hen feed per kilogram eggs with six percent decrease the environmental impacts by 2 to 6 percent. Changing the ethanol feedstock to cellulose-based feedstocks clearly diminishes the toxicity related emissions due to lower fertilizer and pesticide usage. To replace other fat and protein sources with the egg residue byproduct that is yielded within the life cycle is the best treatment method of the egg’s non-phospholipids content. No specific improvements to the treatment method of the hen manure have been found. The fifth scenario includes a sensitivity analysis on the egg yolk powder allocation factor. To increase it from 11 to 25 percent does not give any significant effect on the final results, since this life cycle phase already has very low environmental impact. Actions that will have a significant effect on the egg phospholipids’ total environmental impact are optimize fertilizer and pesticide usage at hen feed and ethanol feedstock cultivations, lower ammonia and phosphate emissions from the hen manure management, and finally, reduced solvent, carbon dioxide, phosphorus and phosphate emissions from the final egg phospholipids manufacturing. Fresenius-Kabi is recommended to further look into these emission sources in order to decrease the egg phospholipids’ environmental impact.

Phosphorus Footprint Model : A Model Development and Application to the Swedish Bovine and Poultry Industries / Phosphorus footprint modell : En modellutveckling and applicering inom svensk köttproduktion

Strååt, Kim Dahlgren January 2013 (has links)
For this master’s thesis a Phosphorus footprint model is developed for and applied to the Swedish bovine and poultry industries. The flows of phosphorus are identified and quantified to create an input-output balance of phosphorus per single life stage of a meat product. The Phosphorus footprint model is validated by applying it to Kronfågel, part of the food production sector at Lantmännen. The results are presented as a “Phosphorus declaration” for one kg of fresh, boneless chicken meat. The declaration shows potential for Kronfågel to be more effective in their phosphorus management by closing the loop between their core processes (animal husbandry and livestock industry) and the upstream process (crop production) and re-circulating manure plus slaughter waste back to agricultural land. The largest losses are identified in feed production and animal husbandry. The conclusion is that the Phosphorus footprint is the accounting methodology framework for creating a quantified flow chart and the Phosphorus declaration illustrates the losses and management improvement possibilities. Also the declaration can be used to label products, increase consumer awareness, as well as implement conscious consumption and a life cycle perspective on all levels related to Swedish bovine and poultry industries.

Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability Aspects of Solvatten, a Water Cleaning Device

Isberg, Ulrika & Karin Nilsson January 2011 (has links)
Solvatten is a water cleaning device for households in developing countries. As a Master Thesis forthe Master of Science in Engineering Programme at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan a Life CycleAssessment of Solvatten has been conducted. The primary aim was to investigate the environmentalimpacts of Solvatten and compare it with two other common methods of accessing safe water;boiling and bottled water. Information has been gathered by contacting manufacturers and suppliersand analysed in the computer software SimaPro. The stand-‐alone LCA of Solvatten showed that theproduct gives almost no impact on ecosystem quality and human health. As the product mostly ismade of different plastic materials (i.e. fossil fuels), Solvatten has its highest impact in the damagecategory of resources. Hence, most of Solvatten’s environmental impact comes from the materialsand production processes of the black container and the transparent lid. The disposal phase ofSolvatten has been left out of the data analysis as there is a large uncertainty in waste scenarios ofdeveloping countries. Instead, a comparison was made between three different waste scenarios;landfill, incineration, and recycling with European standards. It is clear that recycling is the bestalternative, and Solvatten should show their corporate social responsibility by organizing this. Thecomparative studies conducted for Solvatten, boiling water with firewood and buying bottled waterindicated that due to Solvatten’s long lifetime, the environmental impact for Solvatten is lower. Alsodiscussed in the report are the economic and social aspects of Solvatten, which are a great advantagefor Solvatten since both time and money can be saved. Solvatten is concluded to be a goodalternative for accessing safe water.

Fastighetsnära trädgårdsavfallsinsamling i Umeå : En Hållbarhetsstudie / Garden Waste Collection Systems in Umeå, Sweden

Marklund, Erik January 2013 (has links)

Emergy analysis of biodiesel and biogas production from Baltic Sea macro algae

Jarméus, Christoffer January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to compare the production of biodiesel or biogas from macro algae harvested from the Baltic Sea from an energy perspective. The macro algae were considered to be harvested from an area along the southern coast of Sweden, between Malmö and Simrishamn. The gathering of algae is an attempt to reduce the current eutrophication in the Baltic Sea by removing nutrients that the algae have assimilated. The algae also contain some amounts of heavy metals, so the amounts of heavy metals in the marine environment are also reduced. The evaluation included all processes from harvesting of the algae, transport of the algae to the processing plants, processing of the algae to biodiesel or biogas.  An evaluation of the algae residues from the processes can be used as fertilizer in agriculture was also conducted. The inputs of materials and energy into the systems were calculated from values found in literature and estimated from similar studies. The evaluation method used was an emergy analysis where all the energy and material inflows into the processes were converted to solar emergy joules so the inflows can be compared on a common basis. The energy and material inflows into the system, including the harvesting, the transport and the biodiesel or biogas production processes, were converted with the use of transformities, which describes the amount of solar emergy joules per joule of energy, gram of material or cost in euro. The transformities for biodiesel and biogas were calculated and compared to give an indication of which product that is most efficient to produce. The processes were also evaluated using emergy indices, such as environmental loading ratio (ELR), emergy yield ratio (EYR), emergy sustainability index (ESI), emergy investment ratio (EIR) and percent renewability in the systems. The results of the study show that biogas has the lower transformity of the two, which means that the biogas production have utilized less solar emergy joules to produce 1 joule of energy than the biodiesel production. The total amount of solar emergy joules used per year for the biodiesel and biogas systems were calculated to 2.18·1019 seJ/year for biodiesel and 2.75·1019 seJ/year for biogas. The transformities calculated for biodiesel and biogas were 5.04·105 seJ/J and 9.12·104 seJ/J, respectively. The emergy indices, however, showed support for the biodiesel process by indicating lower environmental impacts, a higher economic competitiveness and a higher percent renewability.
