A study of the chrysopids (Neuroptera : Chrysopidae) in two old fields in Quebec.

Manuel, Raymond Lewis January 1982 (has links)
Faunistic composition and population dynamics of chrysopids were investigated in two old fields in Quebec. Nine species were collected; Chrysopa oculata Say and Chrysopa chi Fitch are dominant and resident. / Parasitism due to Chrysopophthorus americanus Mason has little effect on the reproductive potential of C. oculata and C. chi populations. However, embryonic mortality, resulting from autosomal translocations, is a major mortality factor in both species. Their karyotypes are described and developmental studies conducted on them and Chrysopa lineaticornis Fitch are reported. / Inheritance of wing and cephalic characters was investigated in C. oculata. A population genetics study revealed seasonal selection against the allelic gene B (black gradates) and superior fitness of its recessive counterpart b (green gradates). A meiotic drive mechanism also favors the b allele, and the allele A determining "facial band" expression. / Chrysopa chi exhibits obligatory and facultative prepupal diapause. The field population, however, is primarily univoltine. Voltinism is controlled by two independently segregating autosomal genes; the recessive alleles, in the homozygous state, determine obligatory diapause and, consequently, univoltinism. Diapause termination is reported.

A preliminary investigation of the taxonomy and the geographical distribution of the chrysopidae (neuroptera) of Utah

Melander, Wayne A. 01 August 1956 (has links)
The writer undertook a preliminary investigation of the taxonomy and geographic distribution of a group of neuropterous insects, the Chrysopidae, in Utah. The main purposes of the investigation were to find what species and forms of these beneficial insects occur in Utah, to provide means for their identification, and to report upon their geographical distribution. Two main methods of investigation were employed. The first, a bibliographic method, was to carefully review the literature concerning the Chrysopidae of the United States for all references pertaining to their distribution and their taxonomy. The second method of investigation was to study insect specimens of Utah Chrysopidae in order to check the findings of former investigators and to add to our knowledge of this group of insects if at all possible. Fortunately, the writer was privileged to study a large number of specimens in the insect collections of Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, the Utah State Agricultural College and Dixie College in addition to his own personal collection. Keys and other taxonomic aids for the identification of the species which have been recorded in the literature as from Utah as well as the species which are recorded as a result of this investigation are provided. The report on geographical distribution is limited in this preliminary investigation to collection records. As a part of this preliminary investigation, the following material is included: (1) a list of species which have been described from surrounding states which may possibly occur in Utah; (2) a history of the study of this group of insects in Utah; (3) a section on the external morphology of the Chrysopidae; (4) a section with information on collecting, preserving, and rearing of these insects and recording of data; and (5) a glossary. It is hoped this supplementary material will aid in the utilization of the report on taxonomy and distribution and will provide a foundation of basic information for future studies of this group of insects.

Aspectos biológicos e suas implicações na qualidade da produção massal de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) / Biological aspects and implications on the quality of the mass production of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (NEUROPTERA, CHRYSOPIDAE)

Trivellato, Guilherme Frateschi 08 October 2010 (has links)
This research deals with biological aspects and their influence on the quality of Chrysoperla externa produced in laboratory. The system of production was based on seven modules of adult cages from which one collected eggs during 49 days. Such modules must be prepared at each seven days to provide a constant flowing production. Other techniques and analysis of costs of production are described as well. A study of different concentrations (dosis) of the anticontaminant nipagin on C. externa adults indicated that its use showed no significant benefits for the production of this predator.

Dinâmica de predação e resposta funcional em Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) sobre Toxoptera citricida (Hemiptera: Aphididae) aplicada à citricultura orgânica / Dynamics of predation and functional response in Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) on Toxoptera citricida (Hemiptera: Aphididae) applied to organic citrus

Battel, Ana Paula Magalhães Borges 20 January 2012 (has links)
The Brazilian organic citrus has distinguished itself in the international market as regards to exports of concentrated orange juice, pelletized pulp for animal feeding and oils for chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The lime sulphur has been employed as an alternative product for organic agriculture because of its low toxicity, when compared to synthetic insecticides commonly used in conventional agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Chrysoperla externa on its prey Toxoptera citricida in citrus, where lime sulfur was applied in three different concentrations. Specifically, the predation dynamics of C. externa on T. citricida was investigated considering the inclusion of predators and prey in citrus previously treated with lime sulfur. The functional response of C. externa on T. citricida was analyzed based on ecological theory relying on the use of non-linear functions. A mathematical model to describe the action of lime sulphur on the trophic system was also proposed. The results suggest that the concentration of sulphur in 6000 g/mL can be detrimental to the development of green lacewing, significantly reducing the viability of its population. The lime sulphur does not change the predatory ability of the green lacewing. With respect to T. citricida does not seem to be attained by lime sulfur and to show enough attractiveness for the predators larvae development. Polynomial logistic regression indicated type II functional response, which is characterized by an asymptote that exhibits saturation in higher densities for both lime sulphur applied citrus and control citrus. The modeling process resulted in discrete-time equations to evaluate the effect of concentration of lime sulphur on the dynamics of the system. The results obtained by simulations are suitable description for the results experimental found. This suggest a good accuracy of the models to the problem. This kind of result encourage new studies focused on modeling and improvement of the model.
