Journalistic challenges and international news dynamics in the Korean peninsula

Moon, Miri January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores national and international news reporting of a major controversial news story – the sinking of South Korean corvette, Cheonan in March 2010. The thesis draws upon a comparative analysis of major news coverage pertaining to the incident with a sample of US/UK and South Korean media (AP, CNN, The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, Yonhap,The Hankyoreh Shinmun, The DongA Ilbo). In addition 18 semi-structured interviews with foreign correspondents and Korean journalists were conducted in order to explore news gathering practices concerning the incident and to investigate factors that influence news production. There has been a growing debate that a paradigm shift in journalism theory is necessary in the post-Cold War era. This study examines how a new paradigm shift might be applicable in the case of North Korea. This study also addresses international news flow and explores the propaganda model by Herman and Chomsky (2002) in light of media influence in foreign policy. Specifically, this study attempts to investigate the applicability of some filters in the propaganda model in the context of the North and South Korea’s conflict coverage, concentrating on the use of news sources and the impact of new media on journalism practices. This is contextualised by addressing journalistic challenges of covering South and North Korean conflicts. Key findings are that the dominant news frames identified were conflict frames in international news media and human interest frame in national news respectively. The primary factor that influenced journalism practices at a national and an international level include a journalist’s ideology - one of the most significant factors in news framing. Moreover, a routinized journalism practice, and inaccessibility to North Korea that entailed limited news sources also influenced the ways in which news relating to the Cheonan incident was reported. Some filters of the propaganda model, which are routinized news sources relying on officials and ideological convergence such as anti-communism were operationalised in the case of the Cheonan. The international news agencies also played a pivotal role as primary definer and seemed to influence national and international mainstream media. Correspondents perceived that the Korean news media’s ideological cleavage hampered Korean social integration. On a global scale, South Korea’s security is under the influence of geopolitical power control with peripheral countries. Given the impact of newsmaking on society and policy making, this study highlights that investigative journalism practices based on gathering ‘facts’ and the personal ethics of journalists themselves are indispensable.

The aluminum oxide, Al2O3, commonly called alumina it is a compound widely used in chemical industry and is present in toothpastes, ink, water treatment additives and others. However aluminum industry is the principal client where is the main raw material for production of this metal. Most of the aluminum oxide produced today has Bauxite as the main source. The aluminum is present in this ore as oxi-hydroxides which are the main: gibbsita Al(OH)3, diasporo AlO(OH) and boehmita AlO(OH). The refining process for obtaining alumina from bauxite most commonly is the Bayer Process where ore is attacked with a caustic solution based on sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in order to solubilize the aluminum subsequent to recrystallization. The various steps of ore processing are set and adjusted based on the characteristics used as, eg, chemical, mineralogical composition and particle size. Bauxites with different characteristics require different processing. With the increasing demand for alumina, new bauxite sources need to be explored and to know what kind of changes new ore source could require is fundamental. This work aimed to evaluate possible impacts caused by a new source and use this information to evaluate a new mine operation and increase processing capacity at Refinery. Chemical characterization and reproduction of some stages of the Bayer process in bench showed that material from the new source of bauxite does not differ significantly in relation to the first ore confirming investments for opening a anew mine with a capacity of 4 million tons per year supporting production increase refinery production capacity of 1,5 million tons of alumina per year.

Le renouvellement des sources du droit des affaires / The renewal of the sources of business law

Traore, Sidi Yaya 26 April 2019 (has links)
To what extent does the renewal of business law sources influence its development? This is the question this study seeks to answer. The need to address such an issue arises today as a necessity for two main reasons. The first is that this area of law is marked by an unprecedented proliferation of standards. Indeed, in addition to the emergence of new sources in this branch of law, we are witnessing a parallel shift in its traditional sources: law, jurisprudence and practices. Many of the new sources are soft law. This thesis demonstrates how they can be admitted to the pantheon of the sources of the business world. The second is globalization, which exacerbates competition between legal systems "within and outside the European Union". In this context, it is important to verify whether the renewal of the sources of French business law favours or hinders its competitiveness. Consequently, the codification of business law, its attractiveness and its epistemological basis are examined from the perspective of the renewal of the sources of this field of law. Research shows that business law is renewed by its sources, because they make it more flexible, unify it and strengthen its epistemological basis. This renewal must however be put into perspective as it generates legal uncertainty in business world as a consequence of the aforementioned developments. The study proposes a renewed approach to the sources of business law, and suggests a new definition of the concept of formal source. In this way, it aims to contribute to the evolution of the general theory of the sources of law.

Vliv decentrálních zdrojů na provozování distribuční soustavy 110 kV E.ON / The impact of distributed generation on 110 kV distribution system E.ON

Hajdú, Lukáš January 2011 (has links)
This Master´s thesis deals with problematics related to the connection of new decentralized power sources into electrical power grid. Due to advantageous legislative support of these new, especially photovoltaic power sources, a massive amount of these sources have been connected into the power grid between years 2009 and 2010. For theoretical understanding of processes during a steady-state, the initial parts of this paper are focused on a procedure which solves steady-state on every power line mentioned. When we speak of decentralized power sources connection, it is necessary to mention the connected legislative. National distribution grid operators in collaboration with national regulatory commission have decided on a legislative document Rules of distribution grid operation, which puts a set of demands and requirements on applicants wishing to connect a new power source to the grid. The text of this thesis is focused mainly on demands required after the latest change in 1/2010. Practical part of this work deals with verification of new power source influence on a related power grid and meeting the legislatively required demands. The most important demands are voltage change due to new power source operation and its transfer to other voltage levels, higher harmonics injection, power output fluctuation and last, not least, changes in load flow directions. For reasons previously mentioned an analysis is made and possibilities of reducing or removing of these influences are introduced. To achieve these goals, two computer programs, Siemens Sinaut Spectrum and NetCalc are used.
