This study explains the development of Business Week from its beginning in 1929 to 1975 and its changes over this forty-five-year period in format, content and editors. The study shows how Business Week developed, reflecting the history of American business, industry, labor, and the rise of the consumer, and recorded the growth and changes in the magazine's format, news departments, services and features, and staff. The study traces the development of Business Week in three periods, 1929, 1930-1950, and 1955-1975; and concludes that Business Week is the leading magazine publication in the business press. The sources of data for this study primarily include the executives of Business Week and the magazine itself.

Because few women were permitted to join professional orchestras before World War II, women’s orchestras developed in major American cities, including Boston, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, during the interwar period. The Orchestrette Classique, a women’s chamber orchestra, performed in New York City between 1933 and 1944 under the direction of conductor and violinist Frédérique Petrides. Over the course of its tenure, the ensemble became known for its unusual concert programs, which often juxtaposed contemporary compositions with more traditional classical repertoire. Using primary source documents from the Frédérique Petrides Papers collection at the New York Public Library and articles from New York newspapers, this thesis presents the ways in which Petrides promoted the members of her ensemble as serious musicians, despite gender bias and the economic difficulties of the Depression. By cultivating working relationships with contemporary composers such as Henry Cowell, David Diamond, and Paul Creston, Petrides gave female musicians a role in the development of American classical music.

Shutters is a fragmented novel that employs various prose and poetic elements to document the life and endeavors of photographer-writer Ishi in present day New York City. The work follows his quest for emotional and physical connection, and his artistic project where he photographs and writes about suicide survivors. The work explores the observer-observed divide that often manifests in fiction and addresses the themes of physical beauty, art, death and the human condition.
