The aim of this study was to evaluate the cyclic and torsional fatigue resistance of Nickel-Titanium rotary instruments manufactured by different thermal treatments. Were tested a total of 140 rotary instruments (n=20): Genius (GN size 25, .04 taper), Trushape (TS size 25, .06 taper), Logic (LOG size 25, .06 taper), Vortex Blue (VB size 25, .06 taper), ProTaper Gold (PTG size 25, .08 taper), Hyflex CM (HCM size 25, .06 taper) and Hyflex EDM (EDM size 25, .08 taper). Cyclic fatigue resistance testing was performed using an artificial stainless steel canal with a curvature (60° angle and 5- mm radius) located at 5 mm from the tip. The files (n=10) rotated until fracture and time was recorded in seconds. The torsional test evaluated the angular deflection and torque at failure of the instruments (n=10) at 3 mm from the tip according to ISO 3630- 1. The fractured surface of five instruments of each brand was observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests, and the level of significance was set at 5%. The cyclic fatigue resistance value of EDM size 25, .08 taper was significantly higher than those of all instruments tested (P<0.05). The LOG size 25, .06 taper showed a higher cyclic fatigue resistance than those of GN size 25, .04 taper; TS size 25, .06 taper (P<0.05). There was no difference among the others groups. The torsional test showed that PTG size 25, .08 taper had the highest torsional strength value of all instruments tested followed by VB size 25, .06 taper and EDM size 25, .06 taper (P<0.05). The LOG size 25, .06 taper showed significant difference only with GN size 25, .04 taper (P<0.05). No difference was found among the others groups (P>0.05). In relation to angular deflection, the GN size 25, .04 taper; TS size 25, .06 taper; HCM size 25, .06 taper, and EDM size 25, .08 taper showed significantly higher values until fracture than the others groups (P<0.05). No difference was found among PTG size 25, .08 taper, LOG size 25, .06 taper, and VB size 25, .06 taper (P<0.05). The EDM size 25, .08 taper presented the highest cyclic fatigue resistance among all the tested instruments. For the torsional test, the PTG size 25, .08 taper showed highest torsional strength and lowest angular deflection values. Hodnocení vlastností NiTi nástrojů v současné endodoncii / Evaluation of the properties of NiTi instruments in current endodontics

Bumbálek, Michal January 2022 (has links)
Introduction: One of the key prerequisites of high-quality endodontic treatment is the use of endodontic NiTi instruments for the preparation of root canals. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the effect of individual factors which influence the life of endodontic instruments during the clinical treatment of root canals. The dissertation will evaluate the effect the curvature of the canals, the shape of the tip of the instrument, the speed and type of rotation, and the influence of sterilization. The effect of low-temperature plasma nitriding on the fatigue life of the instruments will also be investigated. Materials and methods: Several endodontic systems used for the machine preparation of root canals were studied. The study focused predominantly on the cyclic fatigue of rotary endodontic instruments, wherein the files were rotated in artificial curved root canals. Additionally, the influence of sterilization on the life of the instruments was also examined. Finally, the instruments were treated using thermal plasma nitridation for the purpose of improving their properties. The instruments were then analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and a microhardness meter. Results: Testing cyclic fatigue in artificial root canals with radii R3 and R5 revealed that instruments with a...

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) owe their behavior unique to a reversible phase transformation between two crystalline structures: martensite (low temperature and stiffness) and austenite (high temperature and stiffness). This phase change can occur as a result of two distinct stimuli: a change in temperature or an applied mechanical stress, both over certain critical values, characteristic of this materials. From the latter it results the phenomenon of the superelasticity, which is the ability to totally recover a deformation after simply ceasing the load. During this deformation occurs a stressinduced martensitic transformation from austenite to martensite, being it an exothermal process and that tends to stabilize after a certain number of cycles. Investigation concerning dynamic properties of SMA demonstrate that its superelastic behavior depends on the strain rate, or in other words, on the excitation frequency. This behavior results from the complex combination of mechanical stress, temperature and rate of latent heat dissipation generated in the material. It was also observed that high frequencies diminish the capacity of dissipation of latent heat, resulting in an increase in the material temperature and, therefore, in higher values of phase transformation stresses. This kind of consideration is fundamental in dynamic behavior modeling, applicable for instance, in vibration absorption systems in civil building. In this context, the objective of this work is experimentally study the influence of the frequency on superelastic behavior of pre-stabilized Ni-Ti SMA superelastic wires, as well as the effects of heat generation on the evaluated mechanical properties. Dynamical tests were performed in a uniaxial tensile mode in Ni-Ti SMA superelastic wires varying the frequency and simultaneously monitoring sample’s temperature, using a test machine from MTS, model MTS 793 series.

Nízkocyklová únava pseudoelastické slitiny NiTi / Low cycle fatigue of pseudoelastic NiTi alloy

Kaňová, Monika January 2013 (has links)
This work is focused on study of mechanical properties of NiTi alloy which shows pseudoelastic and shape memory behaviour. Functional and structural fatigue of the material is examined. The main aim of this work was to perform and to evaluate a series of fatigue tests. The material was supplied in the form of wire which was gripped in the machine using special grips. In the first part of the experiment, tensile tests are evaluated and the reproducibility of measurements is demonstrated. Then, a series of cyclic tests was performed. Results were analysed together with previous measurements. One part of discussion concerned changes of the hysteresis loops during cycling and their dependence on strain rate. The fatigue life curves were plotted. It was found that these curves have non-standard shapes. The reasons for this are explained in the work.

Experimental study of NiTi alloy under shear loading over a large range of strain rates / Etude expérimentale de tôles en Ni-Ti sous cisaillement plan simple et sous plusieurs vitesses de déformation

Huang, He 16 March 2016 (has links)
This work describes an experimental study on a NiTi alloy at the ambient temperature (Pseudoelastic behavior) under the double in-plane shear loading over strain rates from 10-4 to 103/s. Under quasi-static loadings (10-4-10-2/s), the optical full-field measurement is necessary because of the very small displacement (0.3mm). The intermediate loading rates (10-1-101/s) are realized with a modified MTS machine able to load at 300mm/s. Moreover, a high-speed camera is needed to follow such tests. Finally, the Split Hopkinson bars are used to perform tests at impact loading rates (102-103/s).The main effort has been made on the methodological study to explore the experimental possibility. For the mechanical level, the attention has been paid on the design of the clamping system to cope with the contradictory requirements. For the measuring level, different optical cameras with sampling rate till to 5M frames/second are used. The texture, the painting, the lightening, the element size and the uncertainty are analyzed. Furthermore, an infrared camera was used at lower loading rates to confirm the DIC measurement. The tests are continually performed over 7 decades of the strain rate. The nominal stress-strain curves and the detailed observation of the transformation band evolution are measured. The main findings are as follows: (i) Regular stress increase with the strain rate; (ii) an inhomogeneous strain field under in-plane shear condition, even at very low strain rates, with a band at 10 degrees from the shear direction under lower strain rates. (iii) Two separated bands at the strain rate of 102/s, which suggests that the localized transformation bands are rate dependent.
