Towards ethical nihilism15 August 2008 (has links)
My study is not concerned with all the implications of Nietzsche’s nihilism, but deals specifically with the challenge his nihilism poses for philosophical conceptions of ethics and morality. My interest lies in the possibilities for conceptualizing an ethical nihilism. By this I mean that I want to remain focused on Nietzsche’s own understanding of nihilism (and Foucault’s development of its implications) in my search for possible ways of moving beyond nihilism’s destruction of traditional morality, instead of trying to ‘save’ morality or ethics by moving beyond nihilism as such. The aim of this study is thus to gauge whether an ethical theory can be developed making constructive use of nihilism and its methodologies. I conceptualize the possibility of ethical nihilism within four chapters. In chapter one I undertake an analysis of the methodology that nihilism provides and demonstrate the theory of knowledge that it underpins. This theory of knowledge results in a diagnosis of the human condition and knowledge within Western modernity. Here the central question is: What does Nietzsche’s theory concerning the formation of knowledge look like? In chapter two I discuss the perspective of so-called passive nihilism, which represents Nietzsche’s diagnosis of the illness or crisis facing humans in Western modernity. Passive nihilism denotes both the illness itself and one particular response to this crisis, namely one of denial. Passive nihilists fixate on holding onto a specific identity as well as a specific form of knowledge as being essential, i.e. as ‘given’, or ‘discovered’. One form of knowledge which emanates from passive nihilism is traditional morality. I will investigate how passive nihilism and the associated form of morality impact on the concrete body of one’s fellow human being, i.e. the Other. As the result of the impact of morality the Other is viewed as a formation in the sense that she is made up of aspects that simply mirror the Self’s privileged compilation of knowledge as it is anchored within the identity of the Self. Here the central question will be: How does passive nihilism problematize the formation of the Other? In chapter three I discuss the remedy to the crisis of modernity as proposed by Nietzsche, namely his vision of so-called active nihilism. Active nihilism considers knowledge and identity as ‘constructed’ and ‘invented’. This perspective holds many interesting implications for one’s own concrete body, i.e. the Self. I will investigate the manner in which active nihilism empowers the Self, which is also viewed as a formation in the sense that her own identity is made up of aspects inhering within a certain privileged compilation of knowledge. Here the central question will be: How does active nihilism problematize the formation of the Self? Chapter four serves as the conclusion to this study. I will discuss Foucault’s elaboration on the remedy that Nietzsche proposes to the nihilist crisis. In light of what Foucault has to say I answer in the affirmative the central question underpinning the research problem of this study: Is a form of ethical, active nihilism possible? In response to this question I propose in some detail a new form of ethics that takes its cue from the insights provided by active nihilism, following my Nietzschean reading of Foucault. / Dr. H. Manifestations of nihilism in selected contemporary mediaOlivier, Marco René January 2006 (has links)
This study focuses on the concept or phenomenon of nihilism, given the regularity with which it manifests itself (to anyone who is aware of it in more or less theoretical or philosophical terms) in all kinds of cultural artifacts such as films, television shows or series, books such as novels or philosophical texts, and magazines. Most of these artifacts can be grouped together under the heading of the media in the present era. The objective of the study is to use the concept of nihilism to identify and analyse selected cases in contemporary media -- in the form of films and television series – to answer the question, with what kinds of nihilism people would come face to face if they knew how to recognize them. The study begins with an outline of a theoretical framework concerning the concept of nihilism. A number of thinkers’ work is used to come to grips with the complex phenomenon, but mostly it is Nietzsche whose thought seems to be valuable for present purposes. In the second chapter the spotlight falls on what is called (in this study) ‘capitalist nihilism’, which seems to belong with what Nietzsche called ‘passive nihilism’, but also seems to exhibit some aspects of ‘active nihilism’. The third chapter is an examination of nihilism in a foreign (Japanese) culture by concentrating on Japanese anime, to test the differences between Western (historically Christian) culture and one with a different cultural and religious history. The last chapter consists of the analysis of a specific (Western) film, I ‘heart’ Huckabees, which was selected because of the variety of ‘nihilisms’ found in it. The study seems to confirm that nihilism is indeed widespread in contemporary, postmodern culture.

Nietzsche and the Pathologies of MeaningForster, Jeremy James January 2015 (has links)
My dissertation details what Nietzsche sees as a normative and philosophical crisis that arises in modern society. This crisis involves a growing sense of malaise that leads to large-scale questions about whether life in the modern world can be seen as meaningful and good. I claim that confronting this problem is a central concern throughout Nietzsche’s philosophical career, but that his understanding of this problem and its solution shifts throughout different phases of his thinking. Part of what is unique to Nietzsche’s treatment of this problem is his understanding that attempts to imbue existence with meaning are self-undermining, becoming pathological and only further entrenching the problem. Nietzsche’s solution to this problem ultimately resides in treating meaning as a spiritual need that can only be fulfilled through a creative interpretive process.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The has the obj ective of this work is to analyze the nihilism that permeates contemporary cultural production, from the concepts of absurdity and rebellion of Albert Camus (1913 - 1960), as possible ethos of a life that does not deny itself and makes it similar to art, nam ely: creative. It is a question of understanding the time of the two world wars (f irst half of the 20th century ), when murders and cruelties were given innocent and reasonable status by philosophy and science. In this scenario, an art shared by the current spirit of revolt. However, at the same time, serve s as a parameter of an action that seeks the production, without suicide, of suicide, murder or totalitarian regimes. For this analysis, the hermeneutic methodology employed consists of an immersion in the essays, romanesca and dramaturgica work of Camu s that searches, throughout in their texts, to identify and discuss the nihilistic problematic in relation to art, within the aesthetic and poetic concerns, which constitute the reflective horizon of t he auth or. We also use Nietzsche's reflections as a support to develop the meaning, an origin and a history of nihilism . From this, we divide our thesis into three chapters : 1 - historical diagnosis of nihilism on the basis of Nietzschean thought and the a ppropri ation that the Franco - Algerian made of the German thinker; 2 - the approach of the relationship between the concept of nihilism and absurdity and how this becomes a model of life and ar...
