Testamenty urozených žen v Čechách mezi lety 1650-1753. Gender a legitimizační strategie šlechty v testamentárním diskurzu / Testaments of Bohemian Noblewomen in the Period from 1650 to 1753. Gender and the Legitimization Strategy of the Nobility within the Early Modern testamentary Discours

SWIDEROVÁ, Kristina January 2008 (has links)
The thesis Testaments of Bohemian Noblewomen in the Period from 1650 to 1753. Gender and the Legitimization Strategy of the Nobility within the Early Modern testamentary Discours is based on the set of accounts left by noblewomen, and tries to find out the role of gender and the meaning of piety within the testamentary field. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis confronted with prescriptive document´s point of view, it examines the testamentary field at three different levels. First of all, it focuses on the contemporary legal status of women. Secondly it deals with the formal structure and terms of last wills, such as property settlement, which is usually the main reason for testaments being composed. But the emphasis is laid on the testamentary piety, which is perceived among others as a means of the legitimization of the nobility itself, for which the process of the adjustments before death was well suited. The thesis is complemented by a standalone chapter researching codicils, documents supplementing or altering original settlements for the case of death. The comparison of their mutual content with last wills reveals real religious feelings, which are otherwise disguised by the emphasis laid on the formality of the testament{\crq}s text. The main goal of the research is to help in the understanding of creation and manifestation of gender roles in different areas of early modern society´s lifestyles as well as to contribute to the recognition of the changes that, at latest by the beginning of 19th century, led to general secularization of the religious practices.

Šlechta na Ústecku ve světle raně novověkých heraldických a epigrafických památek / The Nobility in the Usti Region in the Context of Early Modern Heraldic and Epigraphic Relicts

Šrejber, Adam January 2015 (has links)
The Nobility in the Usti Region in the Context of Early Modern Heraldic and Epigraphic Relicts The Ústí region is one of regions which were affected by a loss of historical memory after the Second World War. It was caused by the elimination of a large part of the cultural heritage to a considerable extent. The Royal Town "Ústí nad Labem" was a common and traditional centre of the region at the beginning of the Early Modern period. It had an influence on the development of the whole region on a number of aspects. The absence of a larger noble dominion with a major administrative centre gave a space to minor noble properties, and to a construction of humbler religious buildings. Churches and their movables are often only relics of the formerly spectacular noble representation in the region. A doctor thesis concentrates on the documentation and interpretation of heraldic and epigraphic relics through which people from five noble families presented themselves in the Ústí region. Bearers of sign and inscription elements have been put into the wide, especially art historical context of a cultural heritage fund of North-West Bohemia. The thesis extends knowledge of the use of arms and inscriptions in seven religious buildings which came into existence on the initiative of the nobility of a foreign origin,...

Des âmes à l’épreuve : le protestantisme nobiliaire bas-normand dans la tourmente (1661-1787, généralité de Caen) / Souls under Duress : protestantism in the Nobility of Lower Normandy in Turmoil (1661-1787, Generality of Caen)

Petit-Blancquart, Véronique 18 December 2017 (has links)
This paper relates the decline of protestantism in the nobility of Lower Normandy , confined to the generality of Caen, from the beginning of the personal reign of Louis XIV in 1661, marked by a policy aimed at Huguenot particularism, up to the the return of tolerance in 1787. It draws, for the years preceding the Revocation, the shaded portrait of a heterogeneous nobility, united nevertheless by a deep attachment to the calvinism inherited from their forebears, and by the numerous family and social ties which formed so many backbone networks in a distinctive but by no means isolated group. Attacked by the first anti-protestant measures adopted by Louis XIV, restricted in their freedom to practise their faith, prevented from fulfilling their ambitions and pursued right up to the intimate sphere of their family homes, the reformed nobility tottered but did not fall and began to show, both as individuals and as a group, a spirit of resistance, founded on their natural propensity for procedural quarrels. The Revocation, by its violence and its repressive measures directed at the nobility, resulted in the break down of protestantism in the nobility of Lower Normandy, within the very sanctuary of the family unit and harboured deep dissension among converts, fugitives, and stubborn individuals whose facial expressions were sometimes difficult to read, when they hid behind the mask of crypto-protestantism. The XVIIIth century took on twilight hues in the obscurity of the Desert which sorely afflicted the souls who hence resisted under cover. Weakened as much by the final blows delivered by the authorities as by internal factors which compromised the renewal of generations, the protestantism of the nobility belonged, more and more to a vanishing world.

Quintane Porra, Anne 03 December 2014 (has links)
Church boocks from five nearby parishes, Baho, Corneilla de la Rivière, Pezilla de la Rivière, Saint Estève, Villeneuve de la Rivière, are remarkable from two points of view on the one hand, because the state of conservation of the certificates is good - more over coming from the seventeenth century – and on the other hand, because the data they deliver are good quatity.Church books as they are close witnesses of people’s lives, are a great source of history. They evoke dark periods and allou to approach some aspects of people and family lives, in a rural and profoundy religious society, based on traditional catalan structures, with its own behaviours and rituals. There is no doust that this research substratum represents a large group of population and enables us to discover a very interesting society.

Sculpting and Weaving Alliances: Alabaster Funerary Sculpture and Tapestry in the Habsburg Netherlands, 1506-1549

Park, Jessie, Park, Jessie January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation explores how alabaster funerary sculptures and tapestries created complex and multifarious alliances between the Habsburgs and members of the high nobility. It proposes that the Habsburgs and the nobility negotiated their relationships with one another through commissioning and displaying works of art that used particular materials, iconographies and styles referencing the politically potent and culturally significant heritage of the Burgundian dukes and the ancient Roman emperors. The alabaster sculptures and tapestries discussed in this two-part study were instrumental in defining and redefining, establishing and renewing these relationships. Part one is devoted to alabaster funerary sculpture in the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Habsburg domain. The origin of great interest in alabaster, together with black marble (black limestone), was the Carthusian monastery, the Chartreuse de Champmol, near Dijon, which had housed the tombs of Philip the Bold, and of John the Fearless and his wife, Margaret of Bavaria. The tombs of the Burgundian dukes became a model for funerary monuments in alabaster of other members of the family and later also for the Habsburgs, including Margaret of Austria, who governed the Low Countries as regent after the death of her husband, Philibert II of Savoy (1480-1504). The tombs of Margaret of Austria, Philibert of Savoy, and his mother, Margaret of Bourbon in a monastery in Brou were intended to assert Habsburg-Savoyard alliance in a region equally desirable to the French for fulfilling their royal ambitions. Following the alabaster and black marble examples in Dijon and Brou, the tombs of Guillaume I de Croÿ and Marie de Hamal, and of Cardinal Guillaume II de Croÿ, originally in Heverlee, near Leuven, were located in a Celestine monastery church that served as a dynastic mausoleum for the noble family. The tombs of the Croÿs offer insight into the extent to which the nobles historically exercised power in the courts of Burgundy and Habsburg, even influencing Margaret of Austria to include all’antica elements in the alabaster funerary monuments and altarpiece in Brou that are otherwise designed in late flamboyant Gothic style. Part two is devoted to exploring tapestries in the Burgundian and Habsburg collections from the late-fourteenth to mid-sixteenth century. Members of the Burgundian and Habsburg families were key players in the development of the tapestry industry in the Low Countries, regulating tapestry production and trade. As an important part of the rulers’ self-fashioning, tapestries were collected, used as gifts, or hung during important occasions. To demonstrate how tapestries were used in a particular setting, I discuss the Seven Deadly Sins set and one tapestry from the History of Scipio Africanus series, both in the Habsburgs' collection, that were displayed during the imperial festivities at Binche and Mariemont in 1549. I examine how these tapestries as well as the specific activities that occurred in front of them and the particular viewers who witnessed and participated in these activities effectively and affectively communicated Habsburg propaganda to the elite local audience, and thereby helped to encourage their loyalty and support.
