Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2000. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 76). / This thesis proposes that physical memory can be a basis for architecture. The goal of this project is to make legible the seasonal growth and decay of an open-air public market in a way that is resonant with the form of the city and its daily life. If we understand a connection to natural and seasonal cycles and a sense of continuity to be a positive thing, this project seeks to relate the use, form, and architecture of one piece of the city to larger ideas about cycles of transformation. By proposing both a permanent and seasonal market, the comings and goings of the temporary pieces are made apparent, giving a presence to their absence. The site for the project is Haymarket Square, located at the southern tip of the Bulfinch Triangle area of Boston, Massachusetts. It is a part of the city which has undergone a radical series of transformations throughout its history, beginning as part of the Charles River and later developing into the first formally planned area of Boston. Today, another series of changes is about to take place as the Central Artery project promises to re-establish some of the fabric of the Triangle that was lost during the construction of the elevated highway in the 1950's. These transformations and the traces they leave behind were the point of departure for the project. Rather than attempting to build or record the physical history of the city architecturally, this project proposes the use of visual and physical devices to make us aware of the cycles of change that take place around us. The major goals of the project are to: -- Detect and re-establish the urban rules which govern that part of the city by defining the edges of the Bulfinch Triangle, Dock Square, and North End areas. -- Create a building that is a focus and still adheres to those rules. -- Make the architecture communicate the weekly, seasonal, and annual cycles of the market in a way which is meaningful to its public spaces. / James MacDonald Bruneau. / M.Arch.

In this thesis, a second-order low pass square root domain filter (SRD filter) based on operational transconductors amplifiers (OTAs) is presented. The SRD filter consists of two translinear filters and four OTAs. Because the OTA has small voltage swings, which may violate the large signal natural of the SRD filter. We investigate the dynamic range of this compact SRD filter with different quality factor(Q). The circuit has fewer numbers of transistors and operate in low voltage, therefore, it has less power consumption and less chip area. The circuit has been fabricated with 0.35£gm CMOS technology. It operates with a supply voltage 1.5V and the biasing current varies from 10uA to 80uA. Measurement results lts show that Im/I0≥40% when the external capacitance C is 3.5pF¡B7pF and Im/I0≥53% when the external capacitance C is 3pF¡B8.5pF. The cutoff frequency of the filter can be tuned from 1.24MHz to 5.53MHz when the external capacitance C is 3.5pF¡B7pF and the cutoff frequency can be tuned from 900KHz to 4.46MHz when the external capacitance C is 3pF¡B8.5pF. The total harmonic distortion is 0.908% and the power consumption is 506£gW.

TITLE: THE RURAL TOWN SQUARE AND ITS NEW IDENTITY MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Craig K. Anz This thesis investigates the current complex nature that is the American town square and its identity in rural heartland communities. Historically, the town square in this context becomes an image of civic pride in its community through the incorporation of essential civic buildings such as county courthouses, city halls, community centers, guest houses as well as functioning playhouses, gathering spaces such as a parks, gazebos, or green space for public use within the town square. However, through the advent of the automobile, one-stop shopping, and urban sprawl, rural town squares have become a shell or fossil of their former selves as citizens visit this district of town less frequently due to a lack of business and public activities. Hence, these spaces become subjugated to other forms of planning and thus become dens for poverty and areas for crime. However there are many present solutions that can facilitate a movement towards improvement in this area. One such solution is the redesign of surrounding square spaces in conjunction with the incorporation of mix-use facilities within the town square streetscape. Mix-use buildings offer a variety of options that can introduce daily use businesses such as coffee houses, bookstores, deli shops, etc..., have night hours, and do not require a large amount of space to operate business. Along with these businesses, mix-use facilities can also incorporate a variety of residential living quarters such as lofts, studios, and townhomes to foster life within these places. Again, as a result, there is a substantial increase in the amount of public activity within the towns square between residents, business proprietors, and shoppers. This activity alone can transform a once dim light of the community into a shining example of the image and identity that the community wishes to project to its participants. The mix-use building and square together also have the ability to co-operate as a self-sustaining entity of the community due to the type of businesses that it incorporates and its proximity to other businesses within the town square and the community as a whole.

In this thesis, we will define Polybius Square Ciphers and explain howit used to encrypt plaintext. We will talk about Playfair, ADFGX andADFGVX. We will introduce how Shannon entropy works and its principalproperties. We will use Shannon entropy and frequency comparison toshow whether Playfair and ADFG(V)X are uncertain and safe in today’stechnological environment.
