Mapping properties of multi-parameter multipliers

Bakas, Odysseas January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is motivated by the problem of understanding the endpoint mapping properties of higher-dimensional Marcinkiewicz multipliers. The one-dimensional case was definitively characterised by Tao and Wright. In particular, they proved that Marcinkiewicz multipliers acting on functions over the real line map the Hardy space H¹(ℝ) to L¹;∞(ℝ) and they locally map L log¹/² L to L¹;∞ and that these results are sharp. The classical inequalities of Paley and Zygmund involving lacunary sequences can be regarded as rudimentary prototypes of the aforementioned results of Tao and Wright on the behaviour of Marcinkiewicz multipliers "near" L¹(ℝ). Motivated by this fact, in Chapter 3 we obtain higher-dimensional variants of these two inequalities and we establish sharp multiplier inclusion theorems on the torus and on the real line. In Chapter 4 we extend the multiplier inclusion theorem on T of Chapter 3 to higher dimensions. In the last chapter of this thesis, we study endpoint mapping properties of the classical Littlewood-Paley square function which can essentially be regarded as a model Marcinkiewicz multiplier. More specifically, we give a new proof to a theorem due to Bourgain on the growth of the operator norm of the Littlewood- Paley square function as p → 1+ and then extend this result to higher dimensions. We also obtain sharp weak-type inequalities for the multi-parameter Littlewood- Paley square function and prove that the two-parameter Littlewood-Paley square function does not map the product Hardy space H¹ to L¹;∞.

Analýza algoritmu SQUFOF / Analysis of the SQUFOF algoritm

Langer, Lukáš January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with collecting facts and making the complete analysis of SQUFOF algorithm. In the beginning you can find a short hystorical re- view and then it continues with desribing how the binary quadratic forms, which represents the number N, continued fractions of √ N, ideals in the ring Z( √ N) and lattices in Q( √ N) are related. This thesis offers the tools usable to switch between these structures and finally it uses these tools to show, how the algorithm SQUFOF works. 1

The Use of the Power Method to Find Dominant Eigenvalues of Matrices

Cavender, Terri A. 07 1900 (has links)
This paper is the result of a study of the power method to find dominant eigenvalues of square matrices. It introduces ideas basic to the study and shows the development of the power method for the most well-behaved matrices possible, and it explores exactly which other types of matrices yield to the power method. The paper also discusses a type of matrix typically considered impossible for the power method, along with a modification of the power method which works for this type of matrix. It gives an overview of common extensions of the power method. The appendices contain BASIC versions of the power method and its modification.

Testing Gravity with MeerKAT and the SKA

Kopana, Mponeng January 2020 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The new 64-dish radio telescope array MeerKAT will be absorbed into the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in late 2020s. These two telescope arrays will produce three-dimensional maps of the integrated intensity of the 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen in galaxies, out to redshifts of 1:5 and 3 respectively. These maps contain a signature of the growth of large-scale structure in the Universe. This signature can be uncovered via redshift space distortions of the two-point correlation function, or power spectrum, of the 21cm brightness temperature uctuations. The growth rate governs the amplitude of the anisotropic signal from redshift-space distortions. It is a powerful probe of gravity and its measurement has the potential to test whether general relativity holds. We use models of the 21cm intensity and its power spectrum, starting from a simple linear model of redshift-space distortions and then extending to nonlinear models. With these models, we make Fisher forecast predictions of the precision with which MeerKAT and the SKA can measure the growth rate

Identity in transformation : re-programming Pretorius Square

Khan, Radhia 30 November 2010 (has links)
The experiences of the past can serve to enrich the knowledge of the present and progression to future generations. As such architecture should be viewed in accordance with literature, music, art and film as a collective depiction of the transition from past ideals to the contemporary values and future aspirations of a living city. Sites of historic importance within the Central Business District (CBD) will be investigated as qualitative research to determine the significance of these sites to current citizens. This will be used to determine the best location and manifestation of an intervention that will create a dialogue between the citizens of today and the urban landscape, encapsulating Pretoria’s history of social transition which indicates heritage as a living time line. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Architecture / unrestricted

Public Power : Within our commons

Ingman Åström, Liza January 2021 (has links)
The Greek agora was created as an invitation to participate in the life of the city and it functioned as the heart of the city and its citizens. I want to bring this back into our commons of the city, by activating it and creating more meeting places. This project started out as a wish to activate our public spaces, and during the first study, I found that we need to engage the citizens more in the process to make it their place and in that way increase the usage. I sent out a questionnaire to all the organisations within the city to understand what was lacking in our public spaces and how the people wanted to develop them further. The answers from the community then turned into my proposition of the public square and parks of my hometown, Örnsköldsvik. In my proposition there are two main quotes from Eric Klinenberg’s book, Palaces for the people, that have been the core of my design‚“It is the interaction between people that creates society and the socially sustainable public urban space”. And the second one;“ Spending time in a market-driven, social setting, even a relatively       inexpensive fast-food restaurant or pastry shop requires paying forthe privilege”  I want to create a place where everyone can interact, no matter age, gender, ethnicity or social background.  In my design I’ve worked with flexibility and that the user is deciding in what way they want to use the space, depending on the time of the day, season of the year and amount of people in the group. One of my inventions is the material storage that enables a spontaneous activity in the city centre. A place where you can find the material for different activities, depending on your interest. It has the same design as the bus stop that we can see in this picture, with a 35 degree roof to make the best use of the pv panels on the roof. This energy source enables the possibility to charge your phone while waiting for the bus or during an activity. It is time for the citizens to connect in our commons.

Vocabulary Strategies in an Elementary Classroom in a Third World Country

Johnson, Laurie 01 January 2015 (has links)
Second and 3rd grade Honduran students in a Christian school are not performing at grade level in vocabulary. Students who lag in vocabulary development may not comprehend what they read and are likely to perform poorly in their course work, which may result in repeating the grade. As a result of the students' poor performance, the school implemented vocabulary squares strategy instruction to improve vocabulary development. Guided by the theory of constructivism, the purpose of this casual comparative study was to determine if vocabulary squares strategy instruction resulted in greater word mastery for 2nd and 3rd grade Honduran students than did traditional vocabulary instruction. The control group (n = 16) received traditional vocabulary instruction, and the experimental group (n = 15) received vocabulary squares instruction for a period of 6 weeks. Analysis of gain score differences via an independent t test revealed no significant difference word mastery. The length of time the strategy instruction was implemented may have been insufficient to affect word mastery. It is recommended that teachers employ the vocabulary squares strategy more frequently and over a longer period of time to determine if vocabulary squares strategy instruction results in greater word mastery than traditional instruction. This practice may contribute to positive social change by increasing vocabulary development, which , in turn, affects students' comprehension and course work performance reducing -the number of Honduran students repeating 2nd or 3rd grade.

The Monuments of Imperial London: Trafalgar Square, the Mall, and the British Empire

Stebbins, Sean January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Penelope Ismay / Monumental projects British social imperialists inaugurated at both Trafalgar Square and the Mall seem like the most obvious examples of imperial arrogance, examining the processes through which they were envisioned, planned, and realized reveals a deep insecurity, both about who Britons were as a people, and ultimately, where they stood in the world as a nation. It is exceedingly difficult to identify a specific, overarching vision from any one British official for either project’s realization precisely because there were so many competing interpretations of how social imperialists should monumentalize—not to mention the competing individuals themselves. Though this insecurity is probably not unique to Britain, I believe the ideological emptiness it betrays is unique to modern empire. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. VEŘEJNÝ MĚSTSKÝ PROSTOR – IVANČICE / PUBLIC CITY SPACE – IVANČICE

Klaška, Petr January 2015 (has links)
In the study, we solve the central square of the town Ivančice extent: Palacky square, Comenius Square and surrounding areas of the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a part of Mill Street. The basic principle of the proposal is to create a bright urbanized area with a clearly organized traffic and movement of pedestrians. Square must in future comply with all requirements for functionality the central city area. Must fulfill both functions of assembly as well as commercial and cultural. Being an active center of the city, which will provide its residents an attractive environment for their identification with the place their home. The proposal's emphasis on compact solutions based on the classic city-forming compositions and standards. The main objective is to preserve the integrity of the specified square area as seen historical photographs. Over time, the square was filled with a variety of often inconsistent or improper furniture, greenery and other solitaires, which, in combination with parking across the surface of the square and double necks impairment of the main urban area. The main aim of the project I had solve the traffic situation, cleansing and unification of Square and finally to incorporate revive nearby parish church. The proposal defines the space Palacky Square following the original historical rectangle plan approaching and divides it into three parts: The first part is a central rectangular area, which blended currently fragmented space. This empty space showcases a Baroque plague column and the fountain with the statue of St. Florian. As a counterweight to the plague column and the fountain is in the opposite half of the rectangle designed water feature in the form of three water jets, which creates a water column of a time his height. Water features does not make the water and in the case of holding larger events it is possible to turn off the water element and thereby clear the entire area of central rectangle. Water feature highlights the main entrance to the church. The central rectangular space will be used as the venue for cultural, sporting and market activities. The second part is operating within the traffic lane pedestrian zones defined lighting and street furniture around the perimeter of serving in a restricted mode for supply. The third part of the irregular portion adjacent to the home life partners defined various commercial activities. Within Comenius Square was left a greater number of parking spaces, but that was přeřešeno such a way as to create wider sidewalks along the larger home and a new expansion bays for seating and meeting and commercial purposes neighboring establishments catering zařízení.4 Almost all surfaces are vertically aligned and newly paved granite chipped tiles (using the existing historic paving). The central rectangular space in the newly paved square cut granite blocks stacked into large squares. Proposal emphasizes the use of high quality noble materials such as stone (granite), cast iron, acacia wood.
