Perceptions of the R48 primary health care trained nurses regarding the implementation of expanded programme of immunization in Tshwane DistrictMashikinya, Mabatho Sarah 11 1900 (has links)
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to explore the perception of the R48 trained professional nurses with regard to implementation of the EPI in Tshwane District Gauteng Province.
METHODOLOGY: A qualitative research design was followed. Data were collected through in-depth qualitative interviews from a purposive sample of eight (8) R48 trained professional nurses. Eight steps of Tech’s inductive, descriptive open coding technique was followed.
FINDINGS: The study established that EPI programme is important in R48 training. The implementation of integrated approach was viewed as beneficial leading to the reduction of diseases. The successful implementation would be more beneficial if it is consistently coupled with support from programme managers and regular in-service on up-dates of new vaccines and technologies are introduced within the programme / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Community service nurses' experiences regarding health care services at Tshwane district public hospitalNkoane, Naomi Lorrain 07 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The aim of this study was to gain understanding of community service nurses’ experiences of health care services at Tshwane district public hospital. This qualitative study followed an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore the community services nurses’ experiences of health care services at Tshwane district public hospital. Data were collected from 11 purposively selected community service nurses using a semi-structured interview format. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis framework for data analysis. Four super-ordinates emerged from data analysis: (1) Resources, (2) Work environmental relations, (3) Supervision and support and, (4) Impact of community service experiences. The study revealed that the health care services rendered at the hospital studied are substandard. Community service nurses reported several challenges experienced during their placement in the hospital under study. Lack of human and material resources, supervision and support contributed to hindrance of smooth acquisition of their clinical skills and experience. These challenges resulted in the psychological and emotional drain of the participants. There is a need for development of guidelines to ensure constant and adequate support to all the community service nurses placed at Ratanang Hospital. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Nurses' understanding and implementation of mental health screening among HIV infected in LimpopoModula, Mantji Juliah 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore the understanding and implementation of the guidelines by nurses to detect mental disorders in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) management in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study aimed to recommend measures to strengthen implementation practices. Qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach was conducted. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select primary health professional nurses trained in HIV programme at primary health care facilities in Capricorn District. Data were collected through focus groups and in-depth individual interviews approach using the interview guide. The interviews started with focus group discussions as primary method and in-depth individual interviews as follow-up. Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed.
Data were analysed using Creswell’s data analysis steps. Four themes emerged from data: understanding of HIV management guidelines; implementation of the guidelines; strengthening of mental health screening and competencies required for mental health screening. The study revealed that the nurses who did not have psychiatric nursing as an additional qualification lacked confidence and skills to conduct mental health screening in HIV positive infected individuals. However, they used their background nursing knowledge to manage clients. They all experienced challenges with information provided in the guidelines to screen for mental health in HIV management.
Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that there should be integration of mental health and HIV and development of practical assessment tools for mental health screening. The study acknowledges the importance of equipping nurses with adequate skills to diagnose altered mental health states among HIV infected individuals. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

who are unique and exceptional. People who have committed crimes due to their
mental conditions are admitted for care, treatment and rehabilitation. Patients admitted
in this ward are verbally and physically aggressive, violent, unpredictable,
unmanageable and at times manipulative. Professional nurses working in the
Maximum-Security Ward are at risk of suffering from occupational stress, burnout, lack
motivation and are anxious. The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences of
professional nurses working in the Maximum-Security Ward at Hayani hospital. A
qualitative approach using a descriptive, exploratory and contextual design was used.
A purposive, convenient sampling was used to sample professional nurses working in
the Maximum-Security Ward of Hayani hospital. In-depth interviews were used to
collect data. A voice recorder was utilised to record all data and the researcher being
the main instrument for data collection. Dependability, confirmability and transferability
were upheld to ensure trustworthiness of the findings. Data was analysed using Tech’s
eight steps approach. Three themes with their categories and subcategories emerged
after data analysis. The themes were as follows: the participants’ views on type of
patients admitted in the ward, participants’ views on safety in the ward and
participants’ views on staff interaction. The study recommended the following:
Emotional counselling and debriefing sessions to be conducted at regular intervals or
after a traumatic incident. Motivational and team building activities to be organised for
professional nurses. Safety of professional nurses must be of significant value. More
support is needed in times of emotional difficulties. Development of a model to support

Communication dynamics in producing effective patient care : a case study at Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic in Kwazulu-Natal, South AfricaMoola, Sabihah 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Interactive health communication between the health-care professional (HCP) and patient relationship for diabetes health-care positively contributes to patient-centred care. Hence individual patient concerns are addressed and catered for in the medical system. The purpose of this study was to analyse in-depth how HCP-patient relationships and HCP-HCP teamwork dynamics positively contribute to effective diabetes patient care and treatment adherence. Different health communication models and theories were reviewed and a conceptual framework was developed from the literature. A qualitative case study approach was used to collect data at Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic. Data was collected using three different methods, namely in-depth interviews with HCPs and patients individually, observations conducted at the clinic analysing both the HCPs and patients, and finally, documentation that emerged as a third data collection method where patient files and diabetes educational material were analysed at the clinic. Triangulation by means of the three methods ensured that reliable, valid and credible data was collected in the field.
Diabetes health-care and treatment management are affected by the social context/social system which includes family and culture. These social factors are acknowledged as core in the literature. However, a single comprehensive health communication model did not exist solely in this regard. The data indicated that at the Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic, patient-centred (individual tailor-made treatment plans) care was only implemented after patients had defaulted treatment for reasons linked to their social circumstances.
The findings of the study indicate that teamwork was favoured in the HCP-HCP relationship at the diabetes clinic, and that this made a positive contribution to effective diabetes patient care. HCPs were overburdened at the clinic since patient numbers were high and there were staff shortages. The patients’ empirical data indicated that interactive communication positively contributed to their medical concerns being catered for at the diabetes clinic, but this tended to occur only after non-adherence. Patients required care and support from HCPs in order to learn to accept diabetes and manage their illness. / Sociology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Sociology)
