The efficacy of Scleron® in the treatment of age-related memory lossEverett, Carrey 31 March 2010 (has links)
M. Tech. / Memory loss refers to the loss of ability to learn new information and the inability to retrieve information previously learnt (Karlawish & Clark, 2003). It is estimated that more than 40% of individuals over the age of 60 are affected by memory loss (Jackson, 2004). There are no recommended treatment options available for mild forms of memory loss (D‟Esposito & Weksler, 2000). The aim of the study was to determine the effects of the anthroposophical medicine, Scleron® in the treatment of memory loss associated with ageing, assessed by digit span; verbal and visual recall and recognition and a memory questionnaire. The trial was a double-blind placebo controlled study using matched pairs. Participants selected to take part in the study were between the ages of 60 and 75 and presented with subjective symptoms of memory loss. Participants were excluded from the study if they scored less than 24 out of 30 on the Mini-Mental State Exam; were previously diagnosed with memory or cognitive disorders; had a previous history of stroke, epilepsy, head injury, psychiatric disease and drug or alcohol dependence. Participants were divided into two groups in matched pairs according to age, education level, occupation and Mini-Mental State Exam scores. At the start of the study, participants completed a memory test and memory questionnaire. Participants in the experimental group received Scleron®, while participants in the placebo group received unmedicated tablets. Participants were required to take 2 tablets in the morning for a period of six weeks. The memory test and memory questionnaire was once again completed by participants at the end of the study. Thirty six participants completed the study. The results of the study were analysed and frequencies and descriptives were calculated for the sample group. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the data within groups, while the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the results between the two groups. iv After analysis of the results of the study, it was concluded that Scleron® did not appear to improve the symptoms of memory loss when using tests of digit span, verbal and visual recall or verbal and visual recognition. Furthermore, it did not appear to improve subjective symptoms of memory loss assessed by the use of a memory questionnaire.

Services for married couples on assistance and pension : a type study of a selected group of cases, Vancouver, 1956Talker, Elizabeth January 1956 (has links)
There are many studies and reports on the needs of the Aged. This thesis adopts the ''type-study'' approach, and seeks to get the information as reported by old people themselves.
For this purpose it confines itself to (a) persons on social assistance, old age assistance or old age pension, and (b) married couples, age limits being fifty-five to seventy-five years.
The eighteen couples chosen for study were interviewed in their homes, the object being to get first-hand knowledge of their circumstances and their own point of view of their needs. This was aided by a prior study of case material from the city of Vancouver Social Service Department. It proved possible, in the main, to typify married couples at this age who could be considered "adjusted" and "unadjusted". This study points up the unmet needs of the unadjusted type, and suggests amelioration of their present circumstances by expansion of volunteer and housekeeper services and certain kinds of recreational units. New services suggested for future experiment which would probably apply to both groups include improvement in communications, specialized in-service staff training, and extension of casework counselling services to include older groups not in need of economic aid.
An attempt has been made to stress the preventive and rehabilitative aspects which may prove capable of avoiding and correcting accelerated ageing. The subject is of Special concern in British Columbia to-day, due to the lengthening span of old age, and growing industrialization with its concomitant economic and family problems. / Arts, Faculty of / Social Work, School of / Graduate

Retirement housing: towards a comprehensive planning and design approachSharp, Ross William January 1976 (has links)
Over the past fifteen years multiple housing for the elderly has assumed a growing importance in the Canadian housing scene. Planners, Architects and Financiers have combined their efforts to produce a variety of attractive, functional and socially positive multiple housing environments for the aged. This thesis, through a case study evaluation of two recently completed highrise retirement centres and an extensive literature review of current and past research, will identify and evaluate many of the planning and design considerations that have evolved within the search for an optimal living environment for the aged.
The planning, designing and constructing of multiple housing developments for older people often take place without enough consideration being given to those limiting characteristics which are a result of the aging process. It is a fact that advancing years do impose many and varied limitations on the daily living habits of the aged. This thesis supports the claim that knowledge of such common limiting characteristics is imperative to the design process. A literature review covering the common physiological, psychological, economic and social characteristics of aging is thus provided.
Much of the past research concerned with multiple housing for the aged has focussed on design and planning considerations related to a single aspect of the ageds' residential environment. The site, for example, is often examined in isolation from the surrounding neighbourhood. This thesis is based on the conviction that a constructive planning approach must involve a comprehensive and simultaneous examination of design and planning considerations pertaining to the suite, building, site and neighbourhood. This thesis covers the five defined areas cited below:
1) the design and features of common spaces;
2) the design and features of bachelor, one bedroom and board residence suites;
3) the planning and design of building sites;
4) neighbourhood and locational design and planning considerations;
5) preference and generalized housing questions.
A literature review covering current and past design and planning considerations as outlined by the foregoing defined areas represented the initial phase of analysis. This review not only outlined varying considerations but also attempted to explain the rationale for them in terms of the needs and limitations of the aged.
The second phase of the analysis involved a description of particular elements and spaces within two highrise retirement complexes in the Municipality of Burnaby, New Vista and Seton Villa. Photographs, and sketches supplement the verbal descriptions of existing features, rooms and areas.
The final phase of analysis was based on data obtained from in-depth interviews conducted with forty respondents living at New Vista and Seton Villa. The intent of this phase was to ascertain the extent to which residential accommodation built in accordance with existing planning and design guidelines meets the needs and desires of elderly folk.
The results of the interviews indicate that older people do have opinions with regard to what they consider good planning and design. The respondents were not only able to indicate the positive and negative aspects of planning and design considerations, but they also provided a number of suggestions in terms of how such considerations could be improved to better meet their needs.
The most significant conclusions that can be drawn from this thesis are presented below:
1) Those responsible for the provision of housing for the aged should possess a basic understanding of those theories of aging which are applicable to planning and design.
2) Planners, Architects and Financiers must be familiar with the common characteristics of the aged in order to fully understand the significance of various design guidelines that pertain to the suite, building, site and neighbourhood. By developing a greater sensitivity to the problems of the elderly, planners and designers will be able to improve upon what has been built in the past.
3) It is important for those responsible for housing the aged to be aware of the views and suggestions the aged have toward planning and design considerations in order to be able to judge the merits and downfalls of existing design and planning provisions. Many existing provisions do not meet the desires of the elderly, while a lesser number do not even meet the most basic of the elderly's needs.
In the future our society will be made up of an even greater proportion of elderly than exists today. People are simply living longer and the trend will likely continue. This fact implies that increasing pressure will be applied by this group in demanding housing that meets their needs and aspirations. It is no longer feasible for Planners and Architects to follow established sets of planning standards and design criteria without further examining the points made in the conclusions expressed above. This thesis will outline the major concerns that must be examined in order to evolve a comprehensive planning approach, capable of promoting a positive residential environment for the aged. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Factors of the Geriatric Depression Scale that may Distinguish between Four Cognitive Diagnostic Groups: Normal, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type, and Vascular DementiaCornett, Patricia F. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between cognitive status and depression in a sample of geriatric patients. Participants included 282 geriatric patients ranging in age from 65 to 96 years who were classified according to diagnosis as: DAT, VaD, MCI, and Norm. All were referred for neurocognitive testing from the Geriatric Assessment Program (GAP) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth, Texas. This study sought to identify factor structures for two versions of the GDS using a geriatric sample of cognitively impaired and intact patients. It then compared these factors to each other to determine whether the GDS-15 is truly a shorter version of the GDS-30. These were then compared to a previously determined factor structure. This study explored whether the four-factors of the GDS-30 are able to differentiate cognitive diagnostic groups. Further, this study sought to identify whether the severity of cognitive decline impacted GDS factor score for each of the cognitively impaired groups. Results revealed a two-factor model of the GDS - 15 and a four-factor model with the GDS - 30. The GDS-15 factors did not differ from the first two factors of the GDS-30. Comparison between the GDS-30 factor structure and that reported by Hall and Davis (in press) revealed no significant differences despite the inclusion of a normal, non-demented group in the current study. Comparisons of subscale scores revealed that DAT patients tended to score lower than the other groups on all but the cognitive impairment subscale. Severity level analyses indicated that as severity of deficits increases, awareness of deficits decreases. This study found that although the GDS-30 is a good screening tool for depression in geriatric patients, it is not particularly useful in differentiating cognitive status group. Also, the GDS-15 was not found to be a good substitute for the GDS-30.
