Development of a Simulation Model of a Self-Energizing Hydraulic Brake to Actively Compensate Brake Torque Oscillations

Friction force oscillations caused by changing properties of the contact zone between brake disc and pad are well known from various applications. Resulting effects like brake judder are known phenomena in brake technologies and in the scope of various scientific work. A new measure to potentially reduce brake torque oscillations is the active compensation with the use of the control system of a self-energizing hydraulic brake (SEHB). New in comparison to traditional disc brakes is the fact that the brake torque is measured by the pressure in an additional supporting cylinder. Thus, the brake system is able to work in brake torque control mode. Within this paper a dynamic simulation model of the SEHB is shown and evaluated with measurement data achieved from a full scale test rig for railway applications. Based on the simulation model a pressure control strategy is developed to minimize brake torque oscillations of lower frequencies. The control parameters of the simulation are transferred to the experimental setup. Finally, simulation and experimental results are compared. Future work will deal with the development of control strategies to additionally minimize brake torque oscillations of the higher dynamics.

Effect of typical and atypical antipsychotics on the 40 Hz auditory steady-state response

Oscillations in the brain’s electrical potential, recorded through the technique of electroencephalography (EEG), reflect the ensemble activity of a large population of neurons. Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is the time-locked entrainment in EEG to an auditory stimulus such as a train of clicks. ASSR to a 40 Hz (gamma frequency) click train is especially reduced in schizophrenia patients, reflecting the sensory processing deficits that impact real-world functional outcomes. Since the 40 Hz ASSR is demonstrable across species and is responsive to pharmacological treatments, it can be a translational biomarker for drug development studies. Prototypical antipsychotic drugs (APDs) like haloperidol and clozapine are examples of typical and atypical classes used to treat schizophrenia patients. While both are D2 receptor blockers, they have additional pharmacological effects that may differentiate them. Here, we investigated the acute effect of clozapine (atypical) or haloperidol (typical) on the 40 Hz ASSR, in two independent studies. The doses for the two drugs were chosen to reflect comparable in vivo D2 receptor occupancy. We used female Sprague-Dawley rats implanted with epidural EEG recording electrodes. In the first experiment, vehicle or clozapine 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg were administered (sc) and the 40 Hz ASSR paradigm (65 dB, 40 clicks for 1 second, 2-sec inter-stimulus interval) was used to record responses at 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes post-drug. Resting-state EEG was recorded at 60 minutes post-treatment. Treatment effects were evaluated on the evoked power and phase-locking factor (PLF), a measure of trial-to-trial consistency of the 40 Hz ASSR. Clozapine improved both measures in a dose and time-dependent manner. Clozapine also tended to reduce the resting-state gamma (30-100 Hz) power, a hallmark of cortical noise. However, the effect was not significant (P>0.05). Next, we tested the effect of haloperidol on the 40 Hz ASSR. Doses of 0.02 mg/kg -0.08 mg/kg (sc) were evaluated at 30, 60, 90 and 120-minutes post-injection. Haloperidol failed to improve the 40 Hz ASSR (evoked power and PLF). Moreover, it had no discernible effect on the resting-state gamma. These results show that despite the comparable blockade of D2 receptors, the putative target for these APDs, clozapine, and haloperidol have different effects on the 40 Hz ASSR. We conclude that the effects of clozapine on 40 Hz ASSR may be unrelated to its affinity to D2 receptors and may be mediated through other pharmacological mechanisms.

On periodic solutions found in simple ocean models with fixed surface fluxes

In einer kürzlich erschienenen Arbeit haben Greatbatch und Zhang darauf hingewiesen, daß interdekadische Oszillationen in einem Ozean-Becken-Modell gefunden werden können, falls dieses mit festgehaltenen Wärmeflüssen angetrieben wird. Diese Oszillationen haben Ahnlichkeit mit jenen, welche Delworth et al. in einem gekoppelten Ozean-Atmosphären-Modell fanden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Mechanismen verglichen, die in drei einfachen Ozeanmodellen mit festgehaltenen Antrieben zu Schwingungen führen. Die Experimente mit einem drei-dimensionalen Becken-Modell werden ausführlich beschrieben. In diesen Experimenten zeigt sich der voll dreidimensionale Charakter der Schwingungen. Die Oszillationen stehen im Zusammenhang mit einer Reduktion der Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit von kalten Randstörungen im nordwestlichen Teil des Ozeanbeckens. Der Grund dafür ist ein anomal großes Gebiet tiefreichender Konvektion in dieser Region. Kräftige Temperaturanomalien enstehen dann infolge von anomaler Advektion. Ganz wesentlich für das Vorkommen von ungedämpften Oszillationen ist eine Verlängerung der Zeitspanne mit starker (schwacher) meridionaler Zirkulation im drei-dimensionalen Modell (\'Schleifen\'-Modell) durch einen Überkompensationsmechanismus. Letzendlich bestätigen diese Experimente die Ansicht von Winton, daß sich die Oszillationen in drei-dimensionalen Modellen nicht mit einfachen \'Schleifen\'-Modellen nachvollziehen lassen. / In a recent paper Greatbatch and Zhang reported the finding of interdecadal oscillations in an idealized ocean basin forced by constant heat flux. This oscillation has many similarities to that found by Delworth et al. in a coupled ocean-atmosphere model. We have used three simple models with fixed surface fluxes, a box model, a Welander-like loop model and a three-level three-dimensional ocean basin model, in order to compare mechanisms associated with interdecadal oscillations in these models. Our experiments with the basin model revealed the three-dimensional character of the oscillations in three-dimensional models. Self-sustained oscillations are associated with a reduction of the propagation speed of cold anomalies in the north-western corner of the model because of anomalous strong convection in that region. Then anomalous gyre circulation leads to the development of strong temperature anomalies. The extension of the period of strong (low) overturning in the three-dimensional (loop) model by some overcompensation mechanism is crucial for the occurrence of self-sustained oscillations. In conclusion we confirm Wintons view that fixed flux variability is not a meridional plane phenomenon related to loop oscillators.

Novel Electromagnetic Responses in Topological Semimetals: Case Studies of Rare-Earth Monopnictides and RAlX Material Family

Thesis advisor: Fazel Tafti / Since the idea of topology was realized in real materials, the hunt is on for new candidates of topological semimetals with novel electromagnetic responses. For example, topological states can be highly conductive due to a topological protection, which can be destroyed in a magnetic field and lead to an extremely high magnetoresistance. In Weyl semimetals, a transverse current that would usually require a magnetic field to emerge, can be generated by intrinsic Berry curvature without a magnetic field -- the celebrated anomalous Hall effect. In this dissertation, both phenomena mentioned above are studied in rare-earth monopnictides and RAlX material family (R=rare-earths, X=Ge/Si), respectively. The monopnictides are ideal for the study of extreme magnetoresistance because of their topological transitions and abundant magnetic phases. In LaAs, we untied the connection between topological states and the extreme magnetoresistance, the origin of which is clarified. In HoBi, we found an unusual onset of extreme magnetoresistance controlled by a magnetic phase dome. On the other hand, RAlX material family is a new class of Weyl semimetals breaking both inversion and time-reversal symmetries. In particular, in PrAlGeₓSi₁₋ₓ (x=0-1), we unveiled the first transition from intrinsic to extrinsic anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals, and the role of topology is discussed. In CeAlSi, we found that the Fermi level can be tuned as close as 1 meV away from the Weyl nodes; moreover, a novel anomalous Hall response appears only when the Fermi level is tuned to be near the Weyl nodes. Classical Cepheids form one of the foundations of modern cosmology and the extragalactic distance scale; however, cosmic microwave background observations measure cosmological parameters and indirectly the Hubble Constant, H 0, to unparalleled precision. The coming decade will provide opportunities to measure H0 to 2% uncertainty thanks to the Gaia satellite, JWST, ELTs and other telescopes using Cepheids and other standard candles. In this work, we discuss the upcoming role for variable stars and asteroseismology in calibrating the distance scale and measuring H0 and what problems exist in understanding these stars that will feed back on these measurements.

Test-Retest Reliability of Tone- And 40 Hz Train-Evoked Gamma Oscillations in Female Rats and Their Sensitivity to Low-Dose NMDA Channel Blockade

Rationale: Schizophrenia patients consistently show deficits in sensory-evoked broadband gamma oscillations and click-evoked entrainment at 40 Hz, called the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR). Since such evoked oscillations depend on cortical N-methyl D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-mediated network activity, they can serve as pharmacodynamic biomarkers in the preclinical and clinical development of drug candidates engaging these circuits. However, there are few test-retest reliability data in preclinical species, a prerequisite for within-subject testing paradigms. Objective: We investigated the long-term psychometric stability of these measures in a rodent model. Methods: Female rats with chronic epidural implants were used to record tone- and 40 Hz click-evoked responses at multiple time points and across six sessions, spread over 3 weeks. We assessed reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Separately, we used mixed-effects ANOVA to examine time and session effects. Individual subject variability was determined using the coefficient of variation (CV). Lastly, to illustrate the importance of long-term measure stability for within-subject testing design, we used low to moderate doses of an NMDA antagonist MK801 (0.025–0.15 mg/kg) to disrupt the evoked response. Results: We found that 40-Hz ASSR showed good reliability (ICC=0.60–0.75), while the reliability of tone-evoked gamma ranged from poor to good (0.33–0.67). We noted time but no session effects. Subjects showed a lower variance for ASSR over tone-evoked gamma. Both measures were dose-dependently attenuated by NMDA antagonism. Conclusion: Overall, while both evoked gamma measures use NMDA transmission, 40-Hz ASSR showed superior psychometric properties of higher ICC and lower CV, relative to tone-evoked gamma.

Canal Wave Oscillation Phenomena Due to Column Vortex Shedding

The GARVEE Transportation Program started by the Idaho Transportation Department has improved parts of I-84 in Boise, Idaho. These desired improvements led to the widening of a bridge over the New York Canal (NYC) in 2009. To support the wider road, additional bridge columns were installed. The new bridge columns had a larger diameter than the existing columns and raised the number of columns from 28 to 60. Construction was completed just before the irrigation season began. During the first irrigation season it was observed that waves and oscillations were occurring within the canal immediately adjacent to the bridge structure. Throughout the irrigation season, it was observed that the intensity of the oscillations would vary. It was also observed that the wave oscillations propagated upstream and downstream from the bridge structure. Both longitudinal and transverse waves were observed. The waves appeared to originate in the section of the canal that was under the I-84 Bridge. A physical model was built in 2010 at Utah State University's (USU) Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) in an attempt to simulate the oscillation phenomenon and to develop potential solutions to the problem. During the original modeling work, a thorough investigation to the causes of this phenomenon was not accomplished due to time constraints. The objective of the follow-up research presented in this thesis was to qualitatively determine the causes of the oscillations. Laboratory tests were performed using the original physical model used in the original 2010 testing.
