A Comparison of Job Corps Graduates and Non-Graduates with Respect to Selected Academic and Psychological Variables

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the academic as well as psychological differences between the McKinney Texas Job Corps graduates and non-graduates. The purpose of the study is to gain knowledge that will be useful in the guidance of Job Corps students. Nine hypotheses were formulated to investigate the relationship between academic achievement and certain selected academic and psychological variables. It was concluded that significant personality differences do exist among the McKinney Job Corps graduates and non-graduates. Chronological age is a significant variable with respect to success at the Job Corps Center. Academic variables are not useful indicators of success at the Job Corps training program.

Furthering the education of young adults : an analysis of Statistics South Africa's internship programme

The purpose of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of Statistics South Africa's internship programme in developing the statistical skills of interns. A mixed method approach which included semi-structured interviews, document study and electronic questionnaires was used to gain insight into the thoughts and perceptions of 38 participants. The study revealed that many of the crucial elements for a successful internship programme are present in the current internship programme. It was also found that the interns do not get the opportunity to implement or utilize their skills in the areas in which they are being placed. The absorption and retention strategy also seems to pose a challenge for the internship programme of which the goal is to retain as many statisticians as possible. Finally, a proper absorption strategy, better and more formal assessments, and a higher salary level for interns being absorbed into the organization should also be considered / Language Education, Art and Culture / M. The impact of internship programme on skills development in selected government departments in Limpopo Province

Thesis (MPA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / In developing countries like South Africa, a skills shortage is already one of the most important problems of the twenty-first century. Consequently, South African public institutions have adopted an internship programme to enhance skills development, knowledge and experience, concentrating on a particular population. An internship, as established by the South African Cabinet in December 2002, is a graduate work experience programme aimed at unemployed graduates aged 18 to 35. Therefore, the study assessed the impact of the internship programme on skills development in selected government departments in Limpopo Province. Secondary to the aim, the study explored the nature of internship programme and skills development in public institutions. It also evaluated the link between an internship programme and skills development and concluded by highlighting challenges and opportunities for an internship programme. The researcher used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, with semi-structured questionnaires for current and previous interns, to achieve the study's goals. Face to face interviewing method was used to collect data from public officials in the three selected government departments in Limpopo Province - Department of Education (DOE), Provincial Treasury, and Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Although public institutions are regarded as hosts of internship programme, pitfalls associated with the internship programme in the South African public institutions persist. The study found, to a large extend, a huge impact of internship programme on skills development in the three selected government departments in Limpopo Province. The study further established that not all participants were clear with the job description of the internship programme. The imprecise job description could confuse interns as they would not know their expected daily performance in government departments. The study argues that such may result in displacement and a lack of sense of belonging among interns within their respective government departments. / (Services SETA)

Bibliography: pages 84-89. / Proponents of CB claim that the system can provide an effective and efficient framework for a large scale national ABE programme which articulates with national education and vocational training systems. This framework provides a particular kind of answer to the 'literacy for what' question. The emphasis is on development. In this research, this view is contrasted with a version of literacy which gives a different answer to the 'literacy for what' question. Researchers such as Street and Wagner and many of the Non-government organisations affiliated to the National Literacy Co-operative prefer to view literacy as a free standing programme concentrating on individual and local needs. These contrasting positions will be used to consider the relative strengths and weaknesses of CB for ABE. While the possibility of using a CB system for the ABE programme in the building industry will be considered, the research will also consider the opportunity of CB beyond the specific needs of the building industry.

Education) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2011 / After the inception of the new government in 1994, a new curriculum was introduced, replacing the then existing curriculum. This new curriculum brought about challenges confronting the School Management Team (SMT) regarding its management and implementation. The changes required a paradigm shift and a proactive leadership approach by the SMT and particularly the principals of the Further Education and Training Schools (FET Schools). New policies were developed in respect of the management of this curriculum, which necessarily require the SMT to know and understand in order to be able to implement the curriculum. The aspect of training was also important in order for the SMT to be effective and efficient managers and implementers of the curriculum. The research study was therefore, about the investigation of the factors which influence the implementation of this curriculum known as the National Curriculum Statements (NCS) in the selected FET Schools in Motheo district. The literature in this study was informed and guided by both international and South African contexts and perspectives. The researcher in this study pursued a mixed mode approach. Quantitative investigation was conducted in selected FET schools within Motheo district specifically Bloemfontein, Thaba-Nchu and Botshabelo schools for deputy principals and Heads of the Departments (HOD) whilst qualitative, interviews were done with the principals. Data analysis was done through the development of categories and comparisons and contrasts were made. The data analysis also took into cognizance the visibility of contrary or alternative explanation for the findings. The investigation, therefore, discovered that most of the School Management Team particularly the principals were not trained on the National Curriculum Statement (NCS), and schools were also experiencing a shortage of resources. The recommendation was that the training for the SMT be an ongoing process as it will help with the successful and effective implementation of the NCS.

An analysis of the coaching competencies of managers in the Eastern Cape

The new world of work requires managers to be performance coaches. Traditionally, coaching was viewed as one of the lesser responsibilities of a manager. With more emphasis being placed on the leadership role of managers, there has been a shift in the role of managers from controller to coach. On-the-job performance coaching remains a neglected management function in many organisations in South Africa. Coaching is imperative for the future success of an organisation because it helps employees build their competence and results in improved performance. The purpose of this study is to identify a core set of coaching values, knowledge and skills that underpin management practices amongst a sample of Eastern Cape managers. The literature review highlights the need for managers to become coaching managers. Five values (building trust, collaborating, learning, helping and empathy) and six knowledge/skills competencies (effective questioning, active listening, problem solving, giving feedback, motivating and reflecting) were identified as being used in best coaching practices. The research design used is predominantly quantitative. A survey questionnaire was designed around the eleven core coaching competencies identified in the literature review. A total of 72 questionnaires were distributed and 40 questionnaires were returned. The response data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The main value of the study is that it proposes a tentative coaching model that can be used by managers to help them function effectively in their new role of coaching manager. The research study has highlighted three broad competency areas (values, problem solving and facilitating) and their related competencies. At the core of the coaching model are five values (building trust, collaborating, learning, helping and empathy) that promote rapport and a coaching friendly environment. iii The model advocates a systematic problem solving process. When coaching opportunities arise on-the-job, the coaching manager uses facilitation skills (effective questioning, active listening, giving feedback, motivating and reflecting) to engage the employee in the problem solving process. / Human Resources / M.Tech. Reflections on the well-being levels of professionals in rural and semi-rural areas : faith theoretical perspective

This study evolved from an involvement with professional people in a rural and semi-rural environment thereby taking into account the role which the Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) plays in their professional context of work. Two underlying factors motivate the study. Firstly, that professional needs and capacities of faith, belief and spirituality are not been catered for in the EAPs. Secondly, that an African-Christian wholesome sense making approach provides more satisfactory answers to the lack of faith, belief and spirituality in the EAPs than the modern versions of the classic dualist and tripartite anthropological schemes of soul and body or soul, spirit and body. Furthermore, a wholesome sense making approach supports and tackles people’s wellness and well-being levels more satisfactorily than the classic dualist and tripartite views. An outline of an EAP in which faith leaders and consultants and their programmes are integrated and which contributes to the enhancing of well-being levels and performance management of professional people is described. The main focus of the study revolves around wholesome foursome experiential patterns in which alternating emphases of faith experience are acted out in the sense of ‘I believe God, I believe myself, I believe my human neighbours and I believe the physical natural environment’. This four side pattern of faith experience functions as an important theoretical assumption in the study. A second theoretical assumption has to do with the foursome processual framework of God’s grand acts of creation, reconciliation (redemption= cross and resurrection of Jesus), renewal (ongoing renewal of everything) and consummation and fulfilment towards the end (aim and goal) in which we as people and the physical natural environment are intrinsically and continuously involved. A third theoretical assumption revolves around the foursome experiential professional performance pattern of ‘I perform for God, I perform for myself, I perform for my human neighbours and I perform for the physical natural environment’.
