Casablanca MuseumLounis, Larbi 01 February 2018 (has links)
Architecture has always been about connection since its primary purpose of building a shelter for humans. Among many other things, it provides connections between people, and connections between people and the natural and built environment. The design and building process is about connection as well. We design in the present, relying on the past to build in the future. In this context, time is the strongest connection that is present in most of the built environment around us.
I consider museums to be a good building type that connects people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation for the public.
Since a very young age, I used to admire the buildings while walking the streets of Casablanca, where I was born. A city that is a combination of traditional Islamic influenced design and the European style of construction brought by the colonizers.
My goal in this thesis is to explore, in an architectural setting, connecting the old city to the new city, and present this story to the general public. / Master of Architecture / Museums connect people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation to the public.
This thesis is an exploration of an architectural setting in which the person would go on a journey in the past to learn and discover how the city of Casablanca came to what it is today. Located in the heart of the city, the site helps orient the visitors by allowing them to have a visual of parts of both the old and new city. That will strongly show the connection between both the Islamic and European architectural styles.

Transformation Of The Morphology Of The Old City Of Sulaimaniyah (northern Iraq) From The Perspective Of Ownership PatternsAmin, Hanaw Mohammed Taqi Mohammed 01 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The main objective of the thesis is to study the forces that built up the morphology of the old city of Sulaimaniyah and the reasons of its existence. It focuses on the morphological elements of property (ownership elements of streets, blocks and parcels) and their existence in spite of the impacts of modernism in the transformation of these elements.
Modernity in Sulaimaniyah city affected the city in terms of the transformation of traditional life pattern and traditional structure into modern function. Modern function covers a new administrative system and new commercial functions. The city adapted itself to these new institutions. As a consequence, the power of state displayed itself in the form of building roads, and then the new larger and regular parcels were created to adapt new functions.
Furthermore, the study aims to establish the historical evolution of the city starting from its foundation and the periods, which are signified by the introduction of modernism concepts. This study is analyzed through a morphological research depending on the physical elements as quantitative characteristics. It starts with an evolutionary plan analysis, which is a tool of morphological study and covers the old part of the city in macro scale, mezzo scale, and consequently, micro scale. The old fabric of Sulaimaniyah city as organic fabric faced the modernism' / s impact gradually due to the construction of streets. In spite of this fact, preserving old fabric' / s morphology behind the power of ownership pattern is still surviving.
In this thesis, typology is another research method, which is used to analyze the evolution of the building fabric of the city in both functional and formal configuration. In addition, a comparison of traditional and modern building types in the old city shows that there are similarities between these types, which suggest that these types are part of the old fabric of the city and they define the morphology of the old city. The study concluded that the morphology of the old city is the product of property in two dimensions (ownership parcels), and the building types on them.

Réalité et avenir des villes historiques face au processus d'urbanisation moderne : étude de cas de Derna et des villes littorales / Reality and future of the cities facing the process of modern urbanization : study of case of Derna and of the coastal citiesEljarba, Elhusian 16 October 2017 (has links)
Since the 60s, cities in Libya have known political, spatial and economic changes, especially after the discovery of oil, which has enabled a large urban modernization operation. Therefore, new urban structures have been developed relatively close to the old cities, thus threatening their fragile structures and functions. After a long period of degradation and of economic, socio-cultural change in most of Libyan old cities, the current situation is reflected in a dramatic urban break which characterizes Libyan cities, and, in a threat to the existence of all the ancient quarters. On the other hand, the concept of conservation and safeguarding of the medina’s heritage is relatively new in Libya. Indeed, it was not until the early 90s that the Libyan authorities began to take some concrete actions against the degraded situation of the ancient cities. In spite of these actions delayed and limited in time and space, the deteriorated situation of the old cities has continued as such. In this context, the subject of this research focuses on the question of the heritage of Libyan old cities and, in particular, of the old city of Derna, in an attempt to identify the general context of urban heritage of the old cities, to assess the real situation, and then to formulate the aspects and the conditions for the emergence of a balanced, appropriate and sustainable process of conservation.
