An In-depth Look at Mental Training as Perceived by 2012 Canadian Olympic Athletes

Quinlan, Alison 26 August 2013 (has links)
This study examined four Canadian Olympic athletes’ attitudes towards mental training and their implementation strategies before, during, and after the 2012 London Olympics. This study interviewed four athletes who competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Athletes were represented from rowing, swimming and track and field. Their interviews were written-up as in-depth narratives to provide a rich, insight into these athletes’ perspectives and unique experiences. The narratives were analyzed individually and were then compared and contrasted across all four. Regarding the current attitudes of the athletes, all athletes interviewed expressed a positive attitude towards mental training. However, they differed in their underlying beliefs as to whether this was a fundamental or supplementary component to their preparation and subsequent performance. Themes that emerged as influencing the development of these attitudes include prior experience and maturity of the athlete. In regards to their implementation methods, the athletes all used mental training but their approach ranged from implementing holistically to a narrower approach. Future research should investigate the different factors that may impact an athletes’ attitude towards mental training such as team versus individual sport, gender, and years of experience. Additionally, exploring what a holistic mental training plan would look like compared to a supplementary approach and whether they result in differences in athlete performance. / Graduate / 0515

Securing the Olympic Games: exemplifications of developments in urban security governance

Boyle, Philip 06 1900 (has links)
The Olympic Games are now characterized by overt displays of military personnel and hardware, the deployment of new surveillance technologies and policing techniques, and rapidly escalating budgets. Yet, most research on security at these urban events has been confined to the sociology of sport or the applied profession of sport management. This dissertation contextualizes the Olympic Games within current debates about security in the post-9/11 environment, and asks what the Games reveal about developments in security, surveillance, and urban governance. At the same time I also ask how the Olympics reinforce and extend these developments in socio-cultural ways. These questions are pursued through four analyses of different aspects of the Games: practices of socio-spatial regulation in Olympic host cities, ideas of resiliency and preparedness in urban governance, the performative dimensions of precautionary governance, and the production and globalization of security expertise. I conclude by suggesting that the Olympics provide a window into future directions in urban security governance.

An evaluation of the evolution and development of Olympic Solidarity, 1980-2012

Cuschieri, Marie-Therese January 2014 (has links)
According to the Olympic Charter, “the aim of Olympic Solidarity is to organise assistance to National Olympic Committees, in particular those which have the greatest need”. For the last five decades funding from the sale of Broadcasting Rights for the Olympic Games, allocated to the National Olympic Committees, has been channelled through Olympic Solidarity as a means of promoting development. The aim of this research was therefore to evaluate the extent to which this redistributive claim is evidenced through an analysis of the distribution of the Olympic Solidarity funding, and an insight into the life histories of people involved in the process of allocating grant aid for Olympic Solidarity's World Programme funding.

Ochrana olympijských symbolik ve vztahu k médiím / Protection of Olympic symbols in relation to the media

Běhounková, Pavlína January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis Protection of Olympic Symbols in Relation to the Media shows how the Czech Olympic Committee monitors the use of Olympic Symbols and how the law that protects Olympic symbols is approached by the Czech media. The main goal of this diploma thesis is to bring a professional insight into this issue, to summarize the legal norms and other accompanying rules of the International Olympic Committee and Czech Olympic Committee and to show specific examples of violations by the Czech media in informing about the Olympic Games. The diploma thesis also uncovers why specific errors in the media occur, how media deal with the protection of the Olympic symbols in the media, and how media ensure the abidance of the law within the internal structures. An integral part of this thesis is a general summary of all the rules, examples of the errors and a summary of both the media and the Czech Olympic Committee perspectives on the issue.
