More buildings about songs and food: A case study of Omaha's Slowdown project.

Seman, Michael 08 1900 (has links)
The success of independent rock music ("indie rock"), once a marginalized sub-genre of the rock idiom and now a globally recognized cultural force, has impacted the urban landscape of Omaha, Nebraska via the mixed-use urban redevelopment project, "Slowdown" - a result of cultural production by the city's successful indie rock business entities. While geographic research has previously analyzed urban redevelopment initiated by fine artists, the event of indie rock music being a catalyst for urban redevelopment has never been considered in a geographic scope. By examining the topics of affordable technological tools, Omaha's reduced cost-of-living, and cooperative efforts by city leaders, insight into how an indie rock "scene" can become a successful urban redevelopment catalyst is gained.

Walkability and property values in Omaha, NE

Stachon, Greg January 1900 (has links)
Degree Not Listed / Department Not Listed / Huston Gibson / Recent studies have shown that walkability can have a positive impact on a community. Walkability has been associated with better public health (Jensen et al., 2017), lower carbon emissions (Morris, 2009), more taxes per land area, and more transportation options which helps low income residents (Speck, 2012; Forsyth, 2015). Additionally, there have been studies done that show housing in walkable areas commands a price premium (Pivo & Fisher, 2011). This should be a good sign for communities because walkable areas are more likely to get built if a land developer can fetch a higher price for a walkable property. But what exactly is the walkability premium for properties in Omaha, NE if there is one? The studies that have linked walkability to higher property values were done in larger cities and few studies have looked at smaller metros in the Midwest (Hack, 2013; Leinberger & Alfonzo, 2012). This study seeks help to fill in this gap in the research by looking specifically at walkability’s correlation to property values in Omaha, NE, a mid-size midwestern city. This study looked at three different land uses in Omaha, NE to see if there is a correlation between walkability and property value. The three land uses were single-family houses, apartments, and restaurants. Property values were measured using data from the Douglas County, NE assessor’s office. The walkability of each parcel was measured using a 1-100 scale as generated from WalkScore.com. A positive correlation between WalkScore and property values was found but only in the eastern part of the city. The correlation was highest in the apartment land use and lower but still positive for single-family houses and restaurants. In the western part of Omaha, there were negative correlations between WalkScore and property value across all three land uses. These results are expected to contribute to walkability literature as a case study on the relationship of walkability to property valuation. It could also be used by municipalities and land developers who are interested in the value of properties they are developing for their communities.

Využití Omaha systému v laktačním poradenství / The Use of Omaha System in Lactation Counselling

VESELÁ, Simona January 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with the use of Omaha system in lactation counselling. At present time the care of newborns realized through general practitioners is minimal. Therefore, the connection of community nursing related to shorter time of hospitalization of both mother and her newborn child is vital. Lactation counselling is closely connected to the obligatory documentation of provided care. Omaha system is considered as a suitable standardized terminology for community nursing. The thesis dealt with the analysis of Omaha system, lactation counselling, the issue of breastfeeding as a whole and the legislation related to nursing documentation in the theoretical part. The main aim of the research is the implementation of Omaha system in lactation counselling. Three main goals were set in the thesis. The first one was to map the differences between the care provided by lactation counsellors with and without medical qualification. The second goal was to describe the way of administration of breastfeeding mothers by the counsellors. The third goal was to elaborate and evaluate the documentation according to Omaha system in the field of lactation counselling provided by counselors with a qualification. To achieve the goals of this thesis quantitative-qualitative method of data collection was used. The method of questioning through a non-standardized questionnaire was selected for quantitative research. The qualitative part of the research was based on the use of semi-structured in-depth interview method. The third part of the research is represented by the content analysis of Omaha system. The qualitative part of the research was processed with open coding method. The research question was answered through the analysis of the interviews. The respondents in this research are represented by lactation counselors. The first research file is represented by counselors both with and without qualification. The second research file includes counselors with medical qualification only. The questionnaire research was realized through an electronic questionnaire. The interviews were conducted with six lactation counselors with a medical qualification. The questionnaire research shows differences in the counselling provided by the counselors with and without a qualification which supports H1. The official documentation for counselling is used by a few respondents and mainly by the ones with a qualification. The good thing is that most counselors record data about mothers and breastfeeding. Next, it seems that the unofficial documentation of counselors includes problems and solutions description. The results show that H2 has not been supported. However, it is good that almost half of the respondents are interested in using a standardized documentation for counselling. Next, the counselors with a qualification do not use standardized taxonomy of nursing problems. The results show that only two counselors with a qualification have a contract with an insurance company. Most of them do not cooperate with a podiatrist or gynecologist. The most troubling issues for them are lack of time and missing contracts with an insurance company. Most of them think that longer hospitalization of mothers does not have a better effect on the quality of breastfeeding. Moreover, the interviews with the counselors with a medical qualification show that the newly created documentation of Omaha system has been processed thoroughly and clearly. They consider it more time demanding, which could be a problem because of the lack of time caused by the financial situation of mothers or because of insurance companies. The output of tis thesis is a newly created documentation for lactation counselors and lactation centers based on Omaha system which allows a more effective way of providing lactation counselling.

Política e parentesco nos Xerente / Politics and kinship among the Xerente

Schroeder, Ivo 28 April 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores the theme of politics and kinship, and returns to studies of the Xerente, a Ge indigenous people of Central Brazil. The Xerente kinship system has been classified as Omaha, but its oblique and asymmetric terminological structure has not yet been used for exploring the rules of matrimonial exchange and the field of political action. The current study comes from the native notion of \"respect\", which corresponds with the beginnings of sociability, because it is this respect that founds and organizes social life, and presides over rituals and matrimonial exchanges. Body paintings, with patterns of circles and lines, awake a direct awareness, which the Xerente translate as wasiwaze or \"our reciprocal respect\". The current investigation, supported by an extensive database, associates clans and moieties with marriage practices and with the settlements on their territory. Analysis of Xerente dualism reveals a social structure that is ideally represented as symmetrical. However, within this framework, asymmetry infiltrates via kinship relations. In the presence of unilateral exchanges, the affines segregate into wifegivers and wife-takers and produce a triadic exchange structure. The closure of the maternal line, together with the impossibility of sister exchange, project the individual into an asymmetrical exchange structure over several generations. Politics is entwined in the groups moulded by kinship, but here the political action is better understood as an effort to re-establish the ideal symmetrical order, neutralising these relations. From political action, however, come social groups of equal status, mechanically juxtaposed, where the representation is always suspect, and concatenating action is very fleeting. With rare forms of collective representation, politics, just like the rituals, is concerned with the symbolic reproduction difference and pursues the ideal of autonomy of each settlement or social group
