POWER DEVIATION ANALYSIS OF THE ROCKNEBY WIND FARM

RIVERO CÁMARA, FRANCISCO JOSÉ January 2015 (has links)
Nowadays the globalization and the economy expansion of the emerging countries demand anincreasing amount of energy. Therefore, energy production as well as the efficiency of energyusage, is essential for future developments of societies. Renewable energies appear as a turnkeysolution that could support the growing demands, and at the same time not being harmful to theenvironment [1]. Within the types of renewable energies, wind energy could be considered asone with large potential. In this paper I present the study of a Swedish wind farm placed in Rockneby.Once the wind turbines were installed and working correctly, a discrepancy between the realenergy obtained and the theoretical energy indicated by the manufacturer was detected. Thestored data in the SCADA system were compared with the values provided by the manufacturerand several analyses were performed. Initially an anomaly in the power residual deviation wasdetected. It was showing an unusual behaviour at high wind speeds. The variation of the airdensity in the wind farm at hub height was considered as a possible reason of the disagreementobserved in the power parameters since the reference density used by the manufacturer was aconstant value calculated in laboratory environment. However, this idea was rejected becausethe power generated in both conditions is similar. The pitch angle was analysed after detectinga significant variations in wind speed measurements made by the anemometer in the turbinenumber three. As a result, it was found a pitch variation in the turbine which seems due to afailure in the anemometer. As a final result, the turbulences were analysed giving as aconclusion that the turbulence intensity were situated around 20%. Therefore, I mainly suggestas a possible explanation of this fact the influence of the turbulence accompanied of a badcalibration or failure in the anemometers.

A future for Scottish agricultural tenancies? : statutory tenancy regimes at a crisis

Smith, Michael P. G. January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the reform of agricultural leases in Scotland. There is a review of selected topics in the history of legislation in this area concentrating upon the issue of security of tenure. It is argued that developments in 2010 with regard to prospective legislation and in case law have left open the road for renewed pressure for the creation of a compulsory “right to buy” for tenants with secure agricultural leases. Subsequent relevant developments are ‘noted up’. The thesis includes a Draft Bill which would introduce a new statutory structure for the tenure of certain farms currently held on “1991 Act tenancies”. The structure would rebalance the property law rights and duties of landlords and tenants with due regard to property rights and land management issues. Protections for the legitimate concerns of both former landlord and tenant are included and there is a major supervisory role for the Scottish Land Court. The Draft Bill includes detailed provisions on succession to the new form of tenure. The Draft Bill also innovates upon recently modified arrangements for fixed term farm tenancies Limited Duration Tenancies (“LDTs”) by the introduction of a degree of flexibility. Recent statistics on the take up of LDTs and the issue of a compulsory right to buy for secure agricultural tenants cast a shadow over the future of most of the currently available statutory forms of tenure. The new statutory structure and the innovation upon the LDT which would be introduced by the Draft Bill map out a future for Scottish agricultural tenancies which would enable the question posed in the title to be answered in the affirmative.

Μαυρομματάκη, Κωνσταντίνα 03 December 2008 (has links)

The development of a coping and life skills programme for adolescents in a rural area / Chantelle A. du Plessis

Du Plessis, Chantelle Aretha January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the sources of stress, support systems, coping strategies and psychological well-being of adolescents in a rural area, and to use this information to develop a coping and life skills programme. While all families face stressor events and crises, some are more likely than others to experience a series of challenges that threaten their functioning. Rural families often face a greater variety of stressor events on a more continues basis than do families in metropolitan areas (Dyk, 2003). Rural families do not have as many resources and services available lo address their problems as do urban families (Deavers & Hoppe, 2001). Farm schools suffer from a variety of shortages. Many schools suffer from a pressing shortage of space and educational aids and in most cases there is only one teacher for every 50 learners (Van Kleist, 2002). Some of the learners have to walk more than 1Okm to school everyday because of the lack of transport. Most schools lack proper sanitation and electricity. Recreational and cultural activities are curtailed through shortages of equipment and suitable locations. Education in life skills may contribute to the enhancement of life quality, The development of constructive coping strategies protects mental health and enhances bio psycho- social well-being in times of high stress. Previously it was assumed that each individual acquired these skills as part of growing up. Alas, the truth is that many people do not cope with life and never learned these skills. These skills should therefore be taught in a direct and systematic way, rather than being left to be learnt incidentally. The qualitative research design was based on a sample of 56 male and female adolescents between 1 2 and 16 years of age. The adolescents were from four farm schools situated in the Potchefstroom area. Sixteen learners were randomly selected for semi-structured interviews to obtain basic information for the pilot study. Approximately 37 learners took part in the programme. The learners attended Grades 4-7. The deve1opment of the programme was done in five phases. During phase one semi structured interviews were held with some of the learners. During phase two the interviews were evaluated thematically, The data was then organized into conceptual categories and was then analyzed. During phase three the programme was developed according to the themes derived from phase two. In phase four the programme was presented at the schools as a trial test. During phase five the programme underwent some changes according to the findings in phase four. The development of the programme went well, however presenting the programme was a more demanding task. Almost none of the participants could properly speak or understand Afrikaans or English. / Thesis (M.A. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007

Farm Design: Functional Architecture in a Family Farming Enterprise

Gudzinski, Mindy 22 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis challenges the argument that farms must grow larger and more specialized in order to survive. The root of this thesis stems from my disdain towards current mainstream industrial methods of farming, attempting to compete in the world market. In theory, current government farm policies are meant to assist and protect farmers on the global market but typically result in protecting the large companies responsible for manifesting the problems in the first place. These key factors have changed the face of the agricultural landscape of North America and have lead to a lost connection between society and their food. These factors have lead me to build upon more sustainable and value-added farm philosophies. Such practices highlight the benefits of small farm enterprises for the farmer, the animals, the environment and society as a whole. The design is in combination a response to the landscape and the local economic niche it functions within. Through physical connection, the architecture highlights the cycles of individual farm elements working together to strengthen the whole farm as system.
