Secondary effects of oral contraceptivesYuen, E Ho January 1978 (has links)
Norethynodrel, a common progestin in oral contraceptives, produces in female rats several significant physiological, cytological and biochemical changes at dose levels of 1 mg and 20 mg per kg: 1) a relative increase in liver mass 2) modification of appearance and extent of the endoplasmic reticulum 3) augmentation of the protein content of the liver 4) increase of the level of cytochrome P- 450 in the liver as determined by : a) difference spectroscopy b) increases in biotransformation of aniline and aminopyrine in vitro and c) reduction of sleeping times of rats dosed with phenobarbital The significance of these findings becomes evident when it is realized that norethynodrel affects and is affected by the same enzyme system which oxidizes medicaments in general in the body: induction of cytochrome P-450 by administration of norethynodrel may interfere with the action of other drugs . Ethinyl estradiol alone showed none of the inductive effects. At high dose levels (20 mg per kg) both norethynodrel and ethinyl estradiol caused a marked inhibition of growth of the animals, producing a net loss of body mass over the 30- day experimental period. Electron micrographic evidence implies that there is also a lowering of glycogen content and a chemical change in the lipids of adrenocortical and liver cells accompanying the use of these agents.

The use of topical subgingival application of simvastatin gel in treatment of peri implant mucisitis : A pilot studyMahrous, Ahmed 01 May 2017 (has links)
Dentistry has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Like all other healthcare specialties, dentistry has evolved through the years. The understanding of physiology of dental health and disease has evolved allowing us to treat dental diseases much more efficiently. However not all dental problems are fully understood.
Diseases that affect the bone and soft tissue around teeth and dental implants, also known as “periodontal” and peri-implant” diseases respectively, have proven to be among the least understood and challenging dental diseases to treat. Recent advancements in microbiology and immunology have revealed that periodontal and peri implant disease have a plethora of interactions between the invading bacteria, the defensive human cells, and signaling micro molecules that control inflammation. Those interactions have opened up a new frontier for researchers in dentistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology and dental materials to understand these interactions and explore possible new treatments.
Simvastatin is a commonly prescribed drug used to control blood cholesterol. Recent research has revealed that simvastatin also possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties, and research has shown that topical application simvastatin is effective at controlling inflammation around teeth with periodontitis. However it has not yet been tested around dental implants with peri-implant disease. Thus the purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect of topical simvastatin on implants with peri-implant inflammation

Oral MicrobiologyOsman, Shaiesta 08 1900 (has links)
Recent studies regarding research on oral microorganisms and the oral diseases are presented. The normal flora of the mouth and the oral environment are first described. Dental plaque and dental caries are primary causes of oral disease. Streptococcus mutans is the major contributor in the initiation and progression of dental caries. Lactobacillus, Actinomyces, and Veillonella are other genera of bacteria linked to dental caries. Periodontitis and gingivitis are periodontal diseases that are caused by oral microorganisms. New research has indicated that various antimicrobial agents and techniques to eliminate or lessen the severity of periodontal diseases. Premature delivery of low birth weight babies in pregnant women has been strongly linked to periodontal disease. Present and future microbiological tests are available to easily determine the causative organisms for most oral diseases that help in diagnosis and treatment of a particular disease.

THE BODILY ACTION RESEARCH OF RAY L. BIRDWHISTELL AND PAUL EKMAN: IMPLICATIONS FOR ORAL INTERPRETATION THEORY.WHITE, KATHLEEN GILSON SNOW. January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to compare the philosophical stance, terminology, methodology, and research findings of two representative and influential investigators in the field of nonverbal behavior, Ray L. Birdwhistell and Paul Ekman, drawing theoretical implications and practical applications for oral interpretation. The study found that while Birdwhistell has maintained that all nonverbal behavior is culturally learned and must be examined within the communication gestalt, Ekman has emphasized the innate, universal, and expressive elements of bodily movement, especially that of the face. Ekman has recognized the role of cultural learning, however. It was found that neither Birdwhistell's nor Ekman's research has rendered support for any of the theoretical approaches to nonverbal behavior which oral interpreters have entertained in the past. However, it was found that Birdwhistell's and Ekman's approaches to nonverbal behavior do justify a more deliberate training strategy in oral interpretation. It was found that Ekman's external variable research methodology which encompasses both indicative and communicative methods offers more chance of generating meaningful and useful research in oral interpretation than does Birdwhistell's structural approach. It was also found that Ekman's constructs of emblem, illustrator, regulator, adaptor, and affect display offer the most workable vocabulary with which to discuss and elucidate nonverbal behavior, and that Ekman's research which is continually updating and expanding these categories illuminates concepts with which oral interpretation scholars have been grappling for years.
