Critique of an intervention programme for educators affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic / Stefanie-Mariè EsterhuizenEsterhuizen, Stefanie-Mariè January 2007 (has links)
As South Africa is one of the countries with the highest HIVJAids prevalence in the world, many South Africans are affected by the pandemic. One of the structures being endangered by the HIVJAids pandemic is the education system. Educators are especially affected by the impact of the pandemic due to the fact that they not only have to cope with infected colleagues who are often absent, but are also burdened with numerous orphans and vulnerable children at their schools because of the pandemic. Sometimes these affected educators even have to care for their own loved ones who suffer from or die of the disease. The impact of the pandemic is personal stress, such as depression and suicidal ideation, plus professional impairment such as through increased workload and staff negativity. Affected educators are vulnerable, struggle to cope and are desperately in need of support, due to the pressure they experience regarding the pandemic. Current literature reports little support for educators affected by HIVJAids with regard to the personal and professional impact of the pandemic. This study focuses on determining the efficacy of REds (Resilient Educators), a support programme compiled to empower educators who are affected by HIVJAids, the implementation of which was also piloted by this study. A qualitative research design which included experimental and action research which focused on the latter (action research) was used. A purposive convenience sample consisting of eight volunteers from local primary schools participated. The researcher made use of a mixed-methods design for the pre and post-tests which included both qualitative and quantitative measuring instruments. REds was implemented over a period of nine consecutive weeks in a group setting and was continuously evaluated by the participants who proposed changes in order to improve the programme. In spite of being realistic about the obstacles they will face with regard to the HIVIAids pandemic, participants reported to be relieved, empowered and motivated to fight the effects of the pandemic. The quantitative results show some improvement in participants' experience of secondary trauma resulting from the impact of the pandemic. The results suggest that REds was efficacious, but that educators need continued support. Some modification of REds is also suggested action research affected impact. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2007.

The presentation of the orphan child in eighteenth and early nineteenth century English literature in a selection of William Blake's 'Songs of innocence and experience', and in Charlotte Brontë's 'Jane Eyre', and Emily Brontë's 'Wuthering Heights'Singh, Jyoti 18 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the presentation of the orphan child in eighteenth and early nineteenth century English literature, and focuses on William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. It is concerned with assessing the extent to which the orphan children in each of the works are liberated from familial and social constraints and structures and to what end. Chapter One examines the major thematic concern of the extent to which the motif of the orphan child represents a wronged innocent, and whether this symbol can also, or alternatively, be presented as a revolutionary force that challenges society's status quo in Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience. Chapter Two considers the significance of the child "lost" and "found", which forms the explicit subject of six of Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience and explores the treatment of these conditions, and their differences and consequences for the children concerned. Chapter Three focuses on Charlotte Bronte's depiction of the orphan in Jane Eyre, which presents two models of the orphan child: the protagonist Jane, and Helen Burns. The chapter examines these two models and their responses to orphan-hood in a hostile world where orphans are mistreated by family and society alike. Chapter Four determines whether the orphan constitutes a subversive threat to the family in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and also explores the notion that, although orphan-hood often entails liberation from adult guardians, it also comprises vulnerability and exposure. The thesis concludes by considering the extent to which orphan-hood can involve a form of liberation from the confines of social structures, and what this liberation constitutes for each of the three authors.

Previous issue date: 2014-08-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study aims at analysing available information regarding exposed and orphaned infants in nineteenth century s Paraíba and by these means comprehending the responsibility mechanisms of the province s Holy House of Mercy (Santa Casa de Misericórdia) and Government regarding these children s custody and destination. Some specific objectives stem from the aforementioned general objective and are as follows: situate the Province of Paraíba in the context of growing planning policies for both the people and the city, supported by the ideas of hygienism and philanthropy; comprehend spiritual bonds formed between infants and godparents; study the roles destined to poor exposed and orphaned infants, particularly the ones related to work, for boys, and marriage, for girls. In order to proceed with the research, the following documents were used: reports by purveyors (provedores) and inspectors (mordomos) corresponding to the period from 1860 to 1889; Book of the Exposed (Livro dos Expostos), from 1869 to 1897; Baptism Records (Assentos de Batismo), from 1833 to 1860; reports by Province Presidents, from 1852 to 1889; data on the first census performed in Brazil, in 1872; and local newspapers issued in the nineteenth century. This particular choice of period is due to the transformations which took place in the Province of Paraíba in both hygienic order and city organization, turning it into a civilised place. During the development of the analysis, bibliography connected to Social History was used as resource to observe relations between Paraíba s Province Government posture towards abandoned children and Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco Provinces. Therefore, our endeavour was to discuss particular aspects of Paraíba s Government policies regarding abandoned children during the studied period.

An evaluation of care and support centres for HIV/AIDS orphans in KhayelitshaRashe, Sivenkosi January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (MTech(Public Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2006 / One of the challenges facing the South African community is the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The epidemic not only disrupts the economy but one of its emerging impacts is
through the children who are left orphaned. The challenge has come at a time when
economic circumstances are making it difficult for extended families to lend a helping
hand to children who are orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. The children left behind
are usually left on their own or are absorbed through care and support centres which
are being becoming popular.
The challenge of these care and support centres has come at a time when an
increase in abuse by the personnel of care and support centres has emerged
internationally. Communities can no longer turn a blind eye to the atrocities that are
being experienced by the children within these centres. This challenge is double
edged as communities feel isolated by the care and support centres which are based
within their communities. The challenge is how communities can breach the gap
between children within care and support centres and children who are left on their
own.
The care and support centres available for HIV/AIDS orphans in Khayelitsha are
predominantly run by foreign donors, which limit community participation. This has
led to the isolation of community members and care and support centre staff and the
core problem of this study will address the evaluation of the care and support
centres. Questions such as what happens to children's properties after their parents'
death, and do they belong in care and support centres or within their communities
arise. These are the areas which will be scrutinized in the study. Areas in which this
thesis will attempt to provide insights and make concrete recommendations.
Simultaneously with the extensive exploration of care and support centres available
for HIV/AIDS orphans theories include the :
• Available care and support centres
• Community participation within care and support centres
• The concept of "ubuntu' in relation to family existence
It is hoped that the focus on the care and support centres available for HIV/AIDS
orphans will make some contribution to effective care and support centres in this
areas, thereby increasing community participation which in turn will revive the
concept of ubuntu within communities.
Finally, recommendations such as the direct involvement of community members is
required to attain which services the care and support centres can offer to the
community and how the community play an active role within care and support
centres will be offered in this thesis, as informed by the survey results, to effectively
manage care and support centres for HIV/AIDS orphans in Khayelitsha.

Exploring the resilience of adolescents in adolescent-headed households using creative expressive artsMoteane, Thembekile Phumzile 01 October 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / Adolescent-headed households are a rapidly growing form of family both nationally and internationally, due to increased death rates caused by HIV/AIDS, migration of labourers from rural to urban areas, and the weakened state of traditional family safety nets in taking up care. This raises responsibilities of orphaned children, with extended families no longer able to cope due to strained socio-economic circumstances. As a result, older siblings become caregivers to the younger siblings, and have to assume the role of parenting their siblings, ensuring that they are well taken care of financially, emotionally and otherwise. Resilience is needed to rise above adversity and to stand firm despite all the obstacles. This study was conducted to explore how creative expressive arts can explore the resilience of adolescents in adolescent-headed households. Creative expressive arts are a source of healing for people who may experience amongst other things emotional barriers as well as an inability to express feelings. Arts in therapy are also of exceptional value when used with people with learning difficulties. This study was based on a socio-cultural framework by Lev Vygotsky as a framework for the research with critical discussion of relevant literature on resilience, adolescent-headed households and their development, mild to moderate intellectual impairment as well as creative expressive arts. A qualitative research approach was chosen to understand the research topic from the perspective of the participants. For the purpose of the study, the interpretivist paradigm was chosen, which focused on how people create meaning out of their lives and experiences. A phenomenological design was employed and research participants included five adolescents from a school that catered for learners with mild intellectual impairments. The participants were purposefully selected. Data collection methods included semi-structured focus group interviews, artefacts and participant observation. As a method of data analysis, the Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to identify themes that emerged, namely: “externalising their contextual stories”, “voicing” and “connecting with belief systems”. The study concludes with possible contributions, limitations and recommendations for future research.
