The Supernatural Marine Vessels of the Vulgate Cycle

Guiver-Bond, Claire 06 1900 (has links)

The aim of this study is to show the literary influences and sources of the supernatural vessels in the Vulgate Cycle with particular concentration on the two religiously oriented and complementary stories, Lestoire del Saint Graal and La Queste del Saint Graal. Among the influences found are fairy and oriental literature, and Greek and Roman mythology which appear to be as prominent as the Biblical material on which the works are based.

In addition, based on the use of the supernatural vessel as a motif, an attempt has been made to determine whether the three stories of the Vulgate Cycle in which these vessels appear, La Mort le Roi Artu, the Estoire and the Queste, are due to a single author, independent authors, or an 'architect' with multiple authors. With reference particularly to the latter two, the evidence, based mostly on the common material of the Solomon's ship episode, seems to indicate that two authors of differing ability were responsible.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Les quakers dans les Lettres philosophiques de Voltaire

Kneppert, Denise January 1974 (has links)

/ Master of Arts (MA)

The Theme of Love in the Novels of André Langevin

McInnes, Ena Margaret January 1969 (has links)

The thesis presents an analysis of the much ignored yet essential theme of love in the novels of André Langevin. Love between man and God proves ineffectual while that love between man and others as well as the love between man and woman, although being characterized by several intrinsic limitations, are none the less beneficial to the Langevinian characters in providing a measure of relief from their basic condition of solitude.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Pirandello's Influence on Jean Anouilh as Seen in the Pièces grinçantes and Anouilh's later Plays

Eisenbichler, Konrad January 1974 (has links)

The purpose of this paper will be to examine the influence of Luigi Pirandello's works on the theatre of Jean Anouilh. In our presentation of Pirandello's concepts and techniques, examples will be chosen only from those plays that have been staged in Paris, as these would be most likely to have had an influence on the French dramatist . In Jean Anouilh's case, by far the greatest emphasis will be placed on the Pièces grinsantes and on his later plays that, because of their particular vision of life, could be considered as an imaginary Nouvelles pièces grinçantes. In this last group we list La Grotte, Cher Antoine ou l'Amour raté, Le Boulanger, la boulangère et le petit mitron, and Les Poissons rouges ou Mon père ce héros.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

The Chastity Test in the Lai du Cor and the Conte du Mantel

Greatbanks, Diane January 1968 (has links)

The purpose of this paper will be firstly to indicate the popularity of the chastity-testing theme in European medieval literature. This will be followed by an examination of the characters portrayed in two such texts, the Lai du Cor of Robert Biket and the anonymous Conte du Mantel. On the basis of this study, it will then be possible to ascertain at what stage in the development of the Arthurian romance these two poems were composed.
/ Master of Arts (MA)
