The outsourcing market for information technology services has been transformed over the last few years. Outsourcing, once inspired primarily by cost reductions, now forms part of overall company strategies in order to improve focus. Intent: The purpose of this research project is to conduct a critical analysis of the outsourcing of information technology infrastructure. In particular, this paper will focus on the process followed and on adherence to good corporate governance and business ethics. This dissertation addresses (i) the strategic reasons for outsourcing, (ii) reasons for not outsourcing, (iii) the different types of models available, (iv) the outsourcing process to follow, and (v) the risks associated with outsourcing. These five aspects were all empirically tested in Trans Hex. Findings: The main findings were that (i) no recognized formal process had been followed; (ii) the risk profile of the outsourcing company changed and (iii) a post-outsourcing review is required to determine whether the process is working as planned and to identify opportunities for improvement. Conclusion: A new approach is needed to improve the viability and success of outsourcing information technology infrastructure. Based on the present findings it is argued that a holistic approach to information technology infrastructure outsourcing should be adopted which combines several outsourcing processes into a company-specific outsourcing process framework.

Objective – Some of the most vulnerable children and youths in our country are those in out of home care, and these children demonstrate higher rates of psychopathology and fare more poorly in school and in social relationships than their peers. Typically, when studying at risk populations, negative outcomes are examined, thereby ignoring those who do well despite their vulnerability. These children, who demonstrate positive patterns of functioning and development despite their exposure to adversity, are considered resilient. The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with a resilient outcome among children and youths in out of home care. Method – The study sample was comprised of 417 children 10 to 15 years old in Ontario who had been removed from their homes of origin and placed in out of home care. Predictor variables were selected based on previous research findings in the area of resilient outcome. In the cross-sectional study, a series of sequential logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with a resilient outcome among children in out of home care. These children were then followed one year later. In the longitudinal study, another series of sequential logistic regression analyses were used to identify variables that were related to future resilient outcomes among the same children in out of home care. Results – The findings showed that many of the independent variables predicted resilient outcome on the different dimensions. Furthermore, overall resilient outcome was best predicted by the foster parental report of high sociability. Conclusion – The findings in the present study confirmed that there exists a subset of resilient children among children in out of home care. The findings allowed for the identification of some factors related to resilient outcome among this population. The practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Outsourcing in the cold supply chain can assist the fresh fruit industry to attain competitive advantage through its role in cost reductions and customer service enhancement. The South African fruit industry depends mainly on export markets to earn revenue. It should thus be reckon that the South African fresh fruit travel long distances to reach these markets as South Africa is remotely situated from its major markets. However, the products have to be in good quality on arrival, and also be on time. The challenge therefore is for the fresh fruit industry to ensure that the cold supply chain is maintained through to international destinations. The primary objective of the dissertation is to perform an analysis of the cold supply chain of the South African avocado for export – ‘charter the movement of the South African avocado from production areas to international markets, paying special attention to the outsourcing possibilities in the cold supply chain’. In order to fulfill this purpose, the study covers the following main aspects: • Developments in the fruit industry focusing specifically on the avocado fresh fruit industry. • Detailed analysis of the cold supply chain and costs associated with operating and managing the chain. • Outsourcing as a strategy for achieving the cold supply chain competitive advantage: assisting the avocado industry to compete effectively with other supplying countries. The dissertation has outlined a number of strategies relevant to deal with the challenges of cold supply chain, such strategies concern themselves with delivering the right product at the right time to the right customer at the right condition and at the right price. It is evident from the discussions in the study that the South African avocado supply chain is long, complex and involves interaction of various processes and role-players. The post-harvest cold supply chain processes involves temperature controlled storage and transportation. Every link in the supply chain must be analysed to identify weaknesses, as there should be no breakage in the chain so that quality of fruit is not compromised and profitability is achieved. Currently storage and transportation are outsourced to a number of service providers. As far as the chain is concerned there are minimal problems regarding temperature management in the chain. Few avocado fruits have in the past failed PPECB quality tests for export. The main challenge (amongst others) that the avocado chain is facing is effective information sharing to ensure a coordinated and well-aligned supply chain that will play a role in reducing costs and enhancing customer service. Lack of, for example accurate crop harvest estimate information and real-time communication and information sharing creates problems for the supply chain to function as a single entity with shared objectives. Based on the above, a number of conclusions about, and recommendations for, outsourcing in the cold supply chain of South African avocado for export are made, a summary of which is provided by the following statements: • A reliable relationship is important for both producers and service providers • Joint responsibility: farmers should play their part in the cold supply chain management • Ensuring cold supply chain best practices • Creation of supply chain vision • Ensuring of supply chain visibility • Adoption of total cost approach • Integrating and coordinating the supply chain Charting the movement of the South African avocados from production areas to international markets requires that short, medium and long-term decisions about outsourcing be thoroughly made. / Prof. J.H. This dissertation investigates the influence of family messages about gender, free expression, conformity, and privacy on coming out disclosures, a difficult experience in today’s society. Using communication privacy management theory, this study explored how heteronormative beliefs, family privacy boundaries, and family communication patterns relate to disclosure concerns. A total of 218 self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) participants were recruited using convenience and snowball sampling techniques. Participants completed an online survey to measure family privacy orientations, family communication patterns, heteronormative attitudes and beliefs, and disclosure concerns. Six linear regression analyses were performed. The findings suggest that both family privacy orientations and family communication patterns contribute to concerns about disclosing one’s sexual orientation. The study did not find heteronormative beliefs and attitudes to play a significant role in disclosure concerns. Additional findings indicate that family communication patterns inform family privacy orientations, which suggest a more complicated chain of influence. The findings of the study highlight the influence of early communication on LGBT individuals’ long-term ability to communicate about their sexual orientation.

In this article, the author dissects and refracts a single, defining moment in his life using autoethnography and the lenses of specific communication and social theories. The author mines the moment in first, second, and third person to uncover the different responses to overwhelming emotions ranging from the noble to the shameful in response to his father’s “coming out of the closet.” A torrent of emotion took the author by surprise and is the total moment of his analysis in this article. The author scrutinizes the multiple ways in which this moment was a release, a turning point, an ending, a beginning, bittersweet, hateful and hate filled, selfish, guilt ridden, and loving. Through multiple retellings of the event, like the film Groundhog Day, the author presents the moment in different narrative formats, from multiple perspectives, with relevant quotations and passages to thoroughly dissect the emotional layers.

This project is a study of how various Protestant Christian subcultures construct their identity and perceptions of LGBT couples in the 21st century United States sociopolitical context. Through an extensive content analysis of 105 sermon transcripts from www.sermoncentral.com, this project allows for a more accurate interpretation of Protestant Christian subgroups’ (via individual perceptions of pastors through their sermon rhetoric) stances on the issues of gay rights in the modern United States. Additionally, I use 2012 GSS survey data as background findings to frame and illustrate the relevance of the results from the content analysis. The content analysis findings show that various pastors from the sample construct their views of gay men and lesbians by 1) alienating LGBT couples, 2) enhancing in-group Protestant identities, and 3) calling for political action to maintain group norms.

The objective of this study was to determine the deflected wing shape and the out-of-plane loads of a large-scale carbon-composite wing of an ultralight aerial vehicle using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. The composite wing was instrumented with an optical fiber on its top and bottom surfaces positioned over the main spar, resulting in approximately 780 strain sensors bonded to the wings. The strain data from the FBGs was compared to that obtained from four conventional strain gages, and was used to obtain the out-of-plane loads as well as the wing shape at various load levels using NASA-developed real-time load and displacement algorithms. The composite wing measured 5.5 meters and was fabricated from laminated carbon uniaxial and biaxial prepreg fabric with varying laminate ply patterns and wall thickness dimensions. A three-tier whiffletree system was used to load the wing in a manner consistent with an inlight loading condition.
