Bukvišová, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the high speed transient modelling in the electrical networks. The introduction of this work discusses mathematical models of the individual devices used in the system and focuses on the line representation. It also contains a more detailed description of Bergeron and frequency dependent line model. The objective of this thesis is to design a network model using ATP-EMTP simulation program. In this model, the switching overvoltage caused by shunt reactor switching and lightning overvoltage are simulated. The thesis thoroughly describes the settings of the components used in the model of analysed network and in conclusion evaluates obtained simulation results in a relation to the insulation coordination.

An Estimation Method for PV Hosting Capacity of Distribution Grids

Ezzeddine, Kassem January 2020 (has links)
The Swedish Energy Agency has a target to increase solar photovoltaics (PV) power production by up to 5-10% of the total electricity demand by the year 2040. The PV potential for the residential market is high and its contribution to the total installed PV capacity is expected to increase significantly. The technical requirements should be met to keep high reliability and good power quality at the customers, therefore, it is important for planning reasons to proactively find the maximum amount PV power that can be connected at each low-voltage network without violating the performance of the grid. This amount is known as the hosting capacity. A method for PV hosting capacity estimation by taking overvoltage and transformer overload as performance indices was developed in this thesis. The method does not require any knowledge about the topology of the network. The overload hosting capacity can be estimated for any combination of customers having PV power and for the overvoltage hosting, the minimum at each penetration level can be estimated. The method was implemented on four low-voltage networks located in a typical Vattenfall medium-voltage network and the comparison of the estimation results to a power flow simulation showed good correspondence. It was shown how the impact of PV power in adjacent secondary substations can be accounted for. Using SS-EN50160 voltage limits, the studied networks were able to handle 3-7 times the PV penetration level needed (8 kWp at 20% of the customers) to achieve the national goal in Sweden without grid investments.

Transient Voltage Distribution in Bushing

Khan, Md Nazmus Shakib January 2020 (has links)
An electrical bushing is one of the most important elements in a power transformer. Steep front surges such as transient impulse voltage from lightning strikes is an inevitable electromagnetic transient mostly happening in power transmission and distribution system. The bushing might lead to be degraded due to such kind of surge. This project deals with overvoltage stress distribution on the transformer bushing under the effect of electromagnetic transient response such as lightning impulse. To understand the behavior of transient response on the bushing, a proper model of power transformer bushing is built-in Comsol multiphysics to authenticate the stress distribution. The electromagnetic wave of impulse propagates onto the overhead line that connects with the transformer. Some understanding of the transient behavior of a conductor bushing has been achieved through studying the influence of inductance property and the skin effect characteristics of a multi-layer coaxial cable on the wave propagation, which has been structured in this project to simplify the model. On the other hand, the skin effect analysis on the conductor of the bushing has been taken also into account in this project using real conductor simulation in the Comsol model. Thus, it will be interesting to compare the real conductor model with the perfect conductor of the bushing through analyzing the current density effect on it. In this project, multi-layer of coaxial cable and transformer bushing are simulated. The simulation is carried out for time domain and frequency domain in Comsol based on the model characteristics.

Gregory, Raquel Cristina Filiagi 25 July 2016 (has links)
The search for mitigation solutions, with respect to the effects of overvoltages linked to the energization and reclosing maneuvers of transmission lines include a challenging subject with strong impact on the insulation coordination of electrical systems. Although the recognition of classical and commercial proposals to mitigate these phenomena, other possibilities are certainly still worthwhile highlighting and investigations. In this context, the present work is grounded in the exposure of the physical and mathematical foundations of a strategy based on controlled switchings, whose moments to the line reclosing are pre-programmed. The computational evaluation of the effectiveness of the methodology is made using the ATP simulator, which are studies in a typical electrical system subjected to the action of short-circuits fallowed by shutdowns and subsequent reclosing, under the action of technology here focused and lack thereof. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Analys av kondensatorbatteriers tillkopplingsfenomen : Undersökning av de kopplingsfenomen som uppstår vid tillkoppling av kondensatorbatterier och deras påverkan på närliggande komponenter / Analysis of capacitor banks switching phenomena : Investigation of switching phenomena that occurs due to capacitor banks switching and their effects on surrounding components

Ezzeddine, Kassem, Oskarsson, Robert January 2017 (has links)
Many electrical devices need reactive power to operate. Transmission of reactive power occupies a proportion of the available capacity in the power system and therefore capacitor banks are used near to the end user to generate reactive power. Thus, the reactive effect is generated and consumed in a separate part of the power system. Capacitor banks switching causes transients which may damage the surrounding components. Based on the real substation Stallbacka in Trollhättan, this study has analysed capacitor banks switching transients within the medium voltage level. The analysis has covered the size of these transients according to different conditions and scenarios. The result showed that the transients in this case never reached serious levels, thus there was no impact on the components. It is not clear whether the transients affect the power quality because there are no defined limits. A calculation tool to the predicted transients was supposed to be created in the process. This calculation tool was never completed due to the unmanageable solution that was obtained.

Power quality analysis using relay recorded data

Birdi, Harjit Singh 01 September 2006
Demand for electrical power is increasing everyday. Along with the increase in power demand, the characteristics of the loads are also changing. From being high power consuming, simple, robust loads, today loads are more efficient, but at the same time more sensitive. The performance and life of these highly sensitive loads depend a lot on the quality of power supplied to them.
Power quality is any deviation of the voltage or current waveform from its normal sinusoidal waveshape. These disturbances include, but are not limited to, sag, undervoltage, interruption, swell, overvoltage, transients, harmonics, voltage flicker and any other distortions to the sinusoidal waveform. Occurrence of one or more of such disturbances is called a power quality event. Automatic classification of these disturbances is important for quick determination of the causes and to characterize possible impacts of the disturbances.
Modern microprocessor based protective relays have numerous integrated functions that allow them to provide information on power quality events. It is proposed to utilize the existing numerical relays to analyze the quality of power at any point in the power system. The numerical relays can be programmed to capture the oscillographic waveform or any disturbance on the analogue signal or change of state of the digital signals and store it in the form of Common Format For Transient Data Exchange (COMTRADE) format. These records are then transferred to a central monitoring workstation for off-line analysis.
This thesis describes a technique to automate the classification and analysis of the power quality events using relay recorded data. The technique uses voltage duration and magnitude (as specified in the IEEE Std. 1159 - 1995, IEEE Recommended Practice for Monitoring Electric Power Quality) of three phases to detect and classify the events. The classified results are then presented in a user-friendly graphical form. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is used to estimate the fundamental frequency and harmonic components in power systems. The graphical user interface of the power quality analysis tool is developed using Microsoft Visual C++ IDE and the algorithms are programmed in C++.
The proposed technique was tested using data obtained by simulating different power system disturbances as well as on the data recorded by relays. The algorithms were able to classify the power quality events accurately. In the future, this facility will: enhance the real time monitoring of power quality and provide statistical analysis of available power quality data. From the utility viewpoint, it would allow them to monitor power quality in a cost effective manner and assist in preventive and predictive maintenance besides helping them to fix differential tariff based on the quality of the delivered power. It may also turn out to be a smart tool for them to penalize the consumer polluting the power quality.
