Phenomenology of asymptotic safety

Gerwick, Erik January 2011 (has links)
In this work we explore the collider prospects for the asymptotic safety scenario being realized as a quantum theory of gravity. Testing gravity at colliders becomes a real possibility in the case of extra dimensional models, or with additional physics leading to a fundamental scale of gravity significantly lower than the Planck mass. We present several approximations for the full non-perturbative renormalization group running, and show how these can be implemented at the level of the graviton wave-function renormalization. The issue of scale identi fication of the physical process with the renormalization group scale k is clarified and several different choices are compared. The various approximations are resolved and shown in most cases to generate scheme independent results. On the phenomenological side, we investigate two separate observables. First, at tree-level we present results on LHC di-muon production due to asymptotically safe gravitons. By including fixed point scaling Kaluza- Klein modes, the predicted signal is enhanced and simultaneously problems associated with the breakdown of perturbative unitarity are reduced. At the one-loop level, we outline our calculation for the contribution to electro-weak precision observables originating from asymptotically safe gravity. New bounds are derived which show different behaviour as a function of the number of extra dimensions compared with previous effective field theory results. Finally, we comment on possible further directions for exploring the frontier of collider physics and quantum gravity.

Adolescent Depression: Experiences and Meanings of Being Parented and Parenting

Farmer, Terri Jean January 2006 (has links)
Major depression affects up to 40% of U.S. adolescents in mild to severe forms, compromising emotional, academic, and relational functioning, including that of interacting with parents. The purpose of this study was to explore the parent-adolescent relationship during an episode of depression in order to elucidate the adolescent experience of being parented and the parental experience as it contributes to the context of the adolescent. Research questions included: 1) What are the depressed adolescent's meanings and experiences of being parented? 2) How do the meanings and experiences of parenting contribute to the context of the lifeworld of the depressed adolescent? An adapted Colaizzian (1978) method was used to phenomenologically analyze interview data from 6 adolescents and 5 parents. Findings for adolescents supported an essential pattern of Dysphoric Tension Between Moving Away and Moving Toward, including themes of Feeling Devalued within the Relationship and Renegotiating the Relationship. Parent findings supported the essential pattern of Tension Between Pulling Closer and Letting Go, with 4 themes including Losing the Familiar, At the Nexus of Action, Composing Life with the Stranger, and Crisis Management Within. The adolescent and parent findings were compared for differences and commonalities to assist in understanding the context provided by the parents. Findings were used to refine the investigator's previous model of adolescent depression.

In the mood for Being : Grammatical mood and modality through phenomenological notions

Forsström, Adam January 2016 (has links)
Linguistic mood is a grammatical term as well as a morphological category of the verb. Due to its often philosophical implications it is challenging to find a definition or a common understanding of the notion; it has been proven historically and linguistically difficult to analyze. In this essay I aim to cast new light upon and interpret the concept of mood in extended, philosophical manners. The argument of the essay is that the traditional approach to the notion is done in ways that omit fundamental aspects of it, as well as puts it into a framework that tries to explain it in ways through which it cannot fully be explained. Thus the thesis is that there is more to the notion than what meets the eye. The idea is to find this through the work of phenomenologists. Alongside a linguistic use, the word mood [Modus/mode] is also being used in philosophy, most notably within a phenomenological discourse. Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty all use the word. By going through a close-reading of the concept, I argue for the proximity between the linguistic and the phenomenological adaption of mood and show how they are ontologically related; the objective is to suggest that there is more common ground between them than the mere (English) name. By concentrating on this term I want to further examine in what way a phenomenological understanding of language can challenge an overly narrow, one-dimensional understanding, which I see as a fault shared by the linguists.

Towards and Anticolonial Philosophy of Land in the West

Guernsey, Paul 30 April 2019 (has links)
Despite a preoccupation with the concepts of land and rent during initial historical cycles of colonization and capital expansion, today’s Western philosophers neglect the importance of land, preferring the generic ontologies offered by the ostensibly analogous affordances of space, place, earth, and world. At the same time, Native philosophers provide substantial and robust philosophies of land both as anticolonial strategies and as expressions of the self-determined legitimacy of Native worlds. This dissertation seeks to redress the failure of Western philosophers to engage in meaningful dialogue with Native philosophers by taking anticolonial criticism to the heart of settler environmental philosophies, especially ecological phenomenology and Marxism. / 2021-04-30
