To start our research, we start from the concept that the history of the long poem was linked to the history of epic and medieval poem until the emerging of Romantism – when the epic united itself to the lyric one (HEGEL, 1997, p. 551). In fact, before Romantism, the long poem was actually the epic poem, cause the classic authors, and the ones before them, was attached to the form to make their poems and the traditional form for a long poem was the epic. The romantic poets broke with the classic formalism, cause they sing about the feelings they are having, wich means, there is an immersion of the subject on the poetic discourse and the used for is a consequence of this. After that, they can composse poems in anyway they want to, with the propose to express the feelings of the moment. Because of that, we consider the long poem, as we know, as a product of Romantism, created from the broke to the classic formalism.

Assessing Poetry Markup with NUScholar

Jyoti, Megha 06 December 2013 (has links)
Scansion is the process of identifying the rhythm of a poem, which plays an important part in the process of analysing a poem by assisting readers in understanding its textual and contextual meaning. Usually, poetry students are taught to practice scansion on paper. In a time when digital media is assisting students through interactive learning in many fields, scansion is not much benefitted from it. Through this thesis we tried to provide a computer-based solution where users could practice scansion, with the added benefits of a digital medium. We conducted semi-structured interviews with the stakeholders of the project to gather the functional and design requirements for the system under consideration. Based on these requirements, we implemented an online scansion tool. We undertook an evaluation of the application to learn whether the system supports the scansion practice task in the way it is supposed to, if the additional features are beneficial in the learning process and which features needed improvement, along with an evaluation of the overall project. The results suggest that, although some features needed improvements, the users liked the application and expressed their interest in using it for practice.

George Eliot's Poetic Imagination: a Study of her Dramatic Poems and Poetic Mottoes

Lin, I-Chieh 12 February 2007 (has links)
Most people consider George Eliot a great Victorian novelist but neglect her role as a poetess. In fact, it is essential to read her poetry as well in order to grasp her thoughts. Her poems come mostly from her personal feelings, her observation of society, and her love of nature. This present thesis is a study of her poems and poetics, her poetic creativity, and her achievement in writing poetry. In the thesis, the introductory chapter has an overall look on George Eliot¡¦s poetic career. Chapter One examines her creative progress of composing poetry and her poetics. Chapter Two discusses her poetic experiment on dramatic poems in her times. The final chapter probes into the poetic mottoes applied to her last three novels. Most important of all, this thesis discovers George Eliot¡¦s identification as a poetess because she is conscious of what poetry offers and stimulates. This thesis, therefore, intends to show a new dimension of George Eliot as a poetess.

Jahre mit Paukenschlägen

Köhler, Klaus 10 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
... (aus dem Vorwort)

Liber Maiorichinus

Barnes, Gillian Elizabeth Helen January 1990 (has links)
At the beginning of the twelfth century the city of Pisa led an expedition against the Arabs in the Balearic islands in the guise of a crusade. Soon after the return of the victorious Pisans to their city an epic, approximately 3,500 hexameters in length, was written in Latin recording their glorious deeds. This poem, the Liber Maiorichinus, is heavily indebted to the epics of classical Rome for its imagery, and to the major classical epicists, Vergil in particular, for its language. The wealth of detail found in the poem concerning the expedition's route, its course of action and the characters who participated in it suggests that the author himself was a member of the expedition. Both of these aspects of the poem are discussed in the introduction to this thesis. The poem was revised soon after its composition; the revision, which was authorial, increased the classical content of the poem and added more detailed information about the expedition. A Pisan tradition maintains that the epic was composed by Henry of Pisa. Of the three manuscripts which contain a text of the Liber Maiorichinus, one, the oldest, contains no indication of the author's identity; the other two manuscripts suggest that Laurentius Veronensis was the author. Writers at the end of the last century and in the first twenty years of this century concentrated their research upon the identity of the poem's author. An outline of their conclusions is included in this thesis. The greater part of this thesis consists of a critical edition of the Liber Maiorichinus with a translation into English. None of the previous editions of the poem are critical ones, and no translation has been available in any language.
