An economics study of container ports in the global network of container shipping

Jarumaneeroj, Pisit 12 January 2015 (has links)
We propose a new measure, called the Container Port Connectivity Index (CPCI), to more accurately reflect the relative importance of container ports within the global network of container shipping. This index is based on both economics and network topology, where the strength of a port is based on its position within the global structure of shipping network and not just on local information, such as the number of TEUs handled or direct links to other ports. As the CPCI produces two separate scores for each inbound and outbound connectivity, we can use them to analyze the economic roles played by each port independently. We also propose a framework for evaluating market stability of a logistics hub in a competitive environment. In particular, we build a model, called the Liner Shipping Cooperative Model, to predict how the community of liners calling at a hub might develop as the result of actions by competitors. We use such a model to study the behavior of shipping lines, as well as the resulting trade-flow changes, as the system gradually moves toward new equilibrium defined by the grand coalition. With this piece of information, a port authority would be able to quantify threats posed by competitors and, consequently, devise counter strategies to safeguard its business against competing ports.

The operation impact of Mainland China container port on the Three Taiwan western container ports------An empirical study for Shanghai port

Cheng, Nieh-fu 28 July 2004 (has links)
Although Taiwan locates at the key position of the southeastern Asia and is also a transportation hub in the west Pacific basin, the intensified competitive surroundings, most of major ports in the world have still tried to improve their operational efficiency and create more service items for inducing more liners¡¦ calls. Mainland China¡¦s attraction as an investment locale for large-scale enterprises will doubtlessly have a great impact on Taiwan¡¦s port economic development. Such a phenomenon will speed up Mainland China¡¦s economic development but will result in a feeble constitution in Taiwan¡¦s port development. To cope with this situation, the ROC government should take additional efforts to improve Taiwan¡¦s port management environment, upgrade Taiwan¡¦s industrial production, and realize it as an Asia-Pacific Transshipment Center at an earlier date so as to provide a better investment environment in Taiwan. In addition, port ability has greatly relationship with international logistics ability, the port ability is influenced by the market situation of international ocean transportation, at the same time, the development of port management and logistics activities will be dependent on the performance of international economics. The purpose of this paper is aimed to figure out the existing issues of Taiwanese port management systems, and to discover the alternatives based on comparative analysis approaches among Taiwan straits.

Modelo de gestão e automação dos portos brasileiros. / Model of the management and automation of the Brazilian ports.

Vianna Júnior, Edison de Oliveira 04 May 2009 (has links)
This monograph could also be called by: elements and subsidies to a model of management and automation of the Brazilian ports, because its initial objective was to propose a model of the port processes. There was an expectation that the implantation of the system would occur in a short time. However, the desired model would only be ready after its implantation and being in operation. This new scene would make possible the reduction of logistic costs and the rational use of the mesh of transports, with the increment of the cabotage and inland navegation, using the Technology of the Communication and Information for rationalization of the processes and simplification of the activities of the public and private agents. Such model can be explained by the necessity of the improvement of the port operations, considering the international scenario of technology, with the increment of the automation , in which the trend is the dissemination of the electronic exchange of data (EDI Successful experiences in this direction can be evidenced in domestic territory, as the Supervia Electronic of data system (SED), used at the Ports of Santos and Rio de Janeiro. The evaluation of the model SISPORTOS proposal must be considered: it has being developed by the Departmento de Programas de Transportes Aquaviários (DEPTA). In spite of not being implanted and not being validated by the port community, the model is presented in order to subsidize new initiatives and to submit it the test. The focus will be given in the system of port management, over all in relation to that they depend on the relationship between the agents, private or public, in the diverse scopes (municipal, state and federal).

A Preliminary Study on the Planning of Eco-Port Kaohsiung

Chao, Su-Yu 10 February 2009 (has links)
The Port of Kaohsiung is the biggest port of Taiwan. Because South Taiwan is full of industries, the port of Kaohsiung ranked world number three. And as the production industry moved to Mainland China, the port of Kaohsiung regressed to the sixth container harbor in the world in 2008. The president, Ma Ying-jeou, elected in 2008, proposed that the port of Kaohsiung would become Eco-port in the future. There are many migratory birds visiting the port of Kaohsiung every April and May. This research referred to the development module in other countries¡¦ eco-ports, and tried to do the feasibility study on the development of Eco-port Kaohsiung. The method includes documents study, expert interview, sites investigate and sum up. This research hopes to let the port of Kaohsiung become the first Eco-port of Taiwan. And let the human development and ecosystem conservation coexists, reach the win-win situation.
