The operation impact of Mainland China container port on the Three Taiwan western container ports------An empirical study for Shanghai port

Although Taiwan locates at the key position of the southeastern Asia and is also a transportation hub in the west Pacific basin, the intensified competitive surroundings, most of major ports in the world have still tried to improve their operational efficiency and create more service items for inducing more liners¡¦ calls. Mainland China¡¦s attraction as an investment locale for large-scale enterprises will doubtlessly have a great impact on Taiwan¡¦s port economic development. Such a phenomenon will speed up Mainland China¡¦s economic development but will result in a feeble constitution in Taiwan¡¦s port development. To cope with this situation, the ROC government should take additional efforts to improve Taiwan¡¦s port management environment, upgrade Taiwan¡¦s industrial production, and realize it as an Asia-Pacific Transshipment Center at an earlier date so as to provide a better investment environment in Taiwan. In addition, port ability has greatly relationship with international logistics ability, the port ability is influenced by the market situation of international ocean transportation, at the same time, the development of port management and logistics activities will be dependent on the performance of international economics. The purpose of this paper is aimed to figure out the existing issues of Taiwanese port management systems, and to discover the alternatives based on comparative analysis approaches among Taiwan straits.

Para a adequada gestão portuária, é necessária a compreensão do porto em um sentido mais amplo, considerando o conjunto de atores que participam da cadeia logísticoportuária e as atividades por eles desenvolvidas. Nos últimos anos, vêm se aprofundando os estudos dos portos como aglomerados empresariais e dos mecanismos de coordenação ou governança dos diferentes atores da cadeia logístico-portuária. Nesse contexto, uma questão emergente diz respeito à análise dos modelos de governança e sua relação com a performance portuária. A governança de cadeias logístico-portuárias é um fator-chave para a competitividade dos portos, podendo ser definida como os mecanismos utilizados para coordenar as relações existentes entre os atores da cadeia logístico-portuária, buscando aumentar a eficiência e a eficácia dos fluxos logísticos relacionados e, consequentemente, melhorando a inserção competitiva do porto. Dado esse contexto, esta tese tem como objetivo propor um modelo de governança aplicado a cadeias logístico-portuárias. Para tanto, inicialmente são estudadas as diferentes classificações de portos, sendo considerados os elementos que as compõem e sua relação com a governança; são analisados os processos logístico-portuários, identificando-se possíveis oportunidades de melhoria e sua relação com a governança portuária; e é analisada a evolução dos estudos sobre governança portuária nos últimos anos, identificando-se os modelos de governança existentes e sua relação com a performance portuária. A partir desses elementos, é desenvolvido um modelo conceitual para apoiar a análise da governança em cadeias logístico-portuárias e, tendo como base o modelo proposto, é feita uma análise comparativa da governança das cadeias logístico-portuárias dos portos de Valência e de Santos. A Simulation Modelling Approach for Analysing Logistics Processes in the port of Gävle

In industries, successful logistics management delivers higher performance and value (time, cost, profits, and quality). Projects involving ports logistics systems are complex to manage due to the level and number of entities to manage, such as the expensive equipment units and the interconnection of the flows of goods and information. In these complex projects, it is difficult to conduct experiments on the real logistics system to help management predict future strategies due to high costs, time and infrastructure constrains. Therefore, to achieve the objectives of managing ports logistics system it requires that managers select the best strategic tools and methods. Simulation is one of the best predictive and strategic tools which allows the use of real-time, real-world data collection to stage mathematical analyses of the “what-if” scenarios. This thesis presents a simulation model for a case study on the port container terminal transportation of the port of Gävle in Sweden. In this model, a simulation approach is developed with a high software engineering maintainability that enables companies to analyse and study various scenarios that are motivated by changes in different inputs to measure their impact on the outputs that include throughput, resource utilization and waiting times. This study method adopted a simulation that covered both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The main contributions of this study are: (i) developing a simulation program helps improve visibility in decision making process at port industry.(ii) providing a guideline for designing the maintainability of simulation models (iii) The simulation model has proved to be an industrial solution for the case company and its various stakeholders.

Harboring the Future: Examining the Digitalization Challenges and Opportunities for Small and Medium-Sized Ports in Sweden

Background: In the context of the latest fourth Industrial Revolution, more and more people have a growing awareness of the concept of Industry 4.0. It has a wide range of applications in various fields and is also particularly important in port logistics. For small and medium-sized ports, digital transformation is significant important since they play a vital role in the supply chain. However, such ports still face many obstacles from digital transformation. Purpose: The study aims to investigate and understand the application of Industry 4.0 in small and medium-sized ports, identify challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies by analyzing existing advantages. Thus, help small and medium-sized ports better achieve the transformation of port digitization. Method: The method in this thesis is based on grounded theory. Besides, the researchers have chosen interpretivism to utilize surveys with port executives to examine the successful digitalization processes in different sized ports. The methodology employed involves a combination of qualitative data, quantitative and secondary data to support the findings. Additionally, the researchers incorporate stakeholder theory to assess the potential advantages and barriers associated with the digital transformation of ports. Conclusion: The researchers found that the technologies should be implemented in priorities such as digitization and Closed network system. Researchers also identified major barriers to implementation which are financing and knowledge & expertise. Most ports have recognized the importance of Industry 4.0. The main benefits of Industry 4.0 are improved operations and cost saving.

A study of demand forecasting cashew trade in Cearà through multivariate time series / Um Estudo da previsÃo de demanda da castanha de caju no comÃrcio exterior cearense atravÃs de sÃries temporais multivariadas

nÃo hà / The application of time series in varius areas such as engineering, logistics, operations research and economics, aims to provide the knowledge of the dependency between observations, trends, seasonality and forecasts. Considering the lack of effective supporting methods od logistics planning in the area of foreign trade, the multivariate models habe been presented and used in this work, in the area of time series: vector autoregression (VAR), vector autoregression moving-average (VARMA) and state-space integral equation (SS). These models were used for the analysis of demand forecast, the the bivariate series of value and volume of cashew nut exports from Cearà from 1996 to 2012. The results showed that the model state space was more successful in predicting the variables value and volume over the period that goes from january to march 2013, when compared to other models by the method of root mean squared error, getting the lowest values for those criteria. / A aplicaÃÃo de sÃries temporais em diversas Ãreas como engenharia, logÃstica, pesquisa operacional e economia, tem como objetivo o conhecimento da dependÃncia entre dados, suas possÃveis tendÃncias, sazonalidades e a previsÃo de dados futuros. Considerando a carÃncia de mÃtodos eficazes de suporte ao planejamento logÃstico na Ãrea de comÃrcio exterior, neste trabalho foram apresentados e utilizados os modelos multivariados, na Ãrea de sÃries temporais: auto-regressivo vetorial (VAR), auto-regressivomÃdias mÃveis vetorial (ARMAV) e espaÃo de estados (EES). Estes modelos foram empregados para a anÃlise de previsÃo de demanda, da sÃrie bivaria de valor e volume das exportaÃÃes cearenses de castanha de caju no perÃodo de 1996 à 2012. Os resultados mostraram que o modelo espaÃo de estados foi mais eficiente na previsÃo das variÃveis valor e volume ao longo do perÃodo janeiro à marÃo de 2013, quando comparado aos demais modelos pelo mÃtodo da raiz quadrada do erro mÃdio quadrÃtico, obtendo os menores valores para o referido critÃrio.

Local political and economical liberal transformations that took place by the beginning of 90 s had seen Estate assets being given to private investments (both in agricultural and port operations). As a result, this new institutional environment allowed the occurrence of hybrids corporate structures to coordinate logistical sugar and alcohol-ethanol exports from inland facilities to the Santos port. The main question is how this adaptation interferes on infrastructural and operational logistics management derived from new transactions within international sugar mayor traders. The main units of analysis are: i) São Paulo s state sugar producers (industrial plants) and port logistics providers; ii) port logistics providers and food trading companies. Results shall foster the comprehension on logistical process and relations amongst the three main actors across the sugar plantsport facilities chain. There are three goals to be achieved: i) identify the total extent of logistical domain across sugar s distributional channels via port of Santos; ii) how logistical assets and processes are developed or provided within those actors; iii) describe the difference among Santos port operations service providers, in relation value-added competitive basis. Theoretical framework blends logistics and supply chain management with foreign trade prospects as a guideline to collect data and empirical evidences. This works object is the São Paulo sugar plants-port of Santos facilities logistics chain. / Esta dissertação trata dos aspectos logísticos da cadeia terrestre e portuária de escoamento do açúcar paulista pelo Porto de Santos. A problemática desta pesquisa considera as transformações políticas e econômicas resultantes da desregulamentação do setor sucroalcooleiro, datadas do início da década de 90, e da concessão dos serviços portuários na metade daquela década. Este novo ambiente institucional possibilitou a ocorrência de novas formas organizacionais para a coordenação das operações logísticas para exportação de commodities sucroalcooleiras (açúcar e álcool) pelos portos brasileiros. Estudos multi-casos de cunho qualitativo compõem a estratégia de pesquisa. As unidades de análise são compostas pelos seguintes pares: i) terminais portuários açucareiros e a indústria sucroalcooleira paulista; ii) terminais portuários e as trading companys agrícolas que operam no mercado internacional de commodities. Os resultados servirão para a descrição dos processos e a análise das relações envolvidos naquela cadeia logística, conforme: i) formas de relacionamento entre os atores centrais, segundo as transações na cadeia de escoamento do açúcar; ii) processos logísticos, considerando o grau de controle sobre os recursos e competências (se desenvolvidos internamente ou terceirizados); iii) operações logísticas nos terminais açucareiros santistas, segundo as diferenças na prestação de serviços que agreguem, ou não, valor à carga embarcada. Estes resultados respondem à questão de pesquisa: quais são os condicionantes (sob o ponto de vista de aspectos comerciais) que interferem na organização e infra-estrutura disponibilizada para a logística de escoamento para exportação do açúcar paulista? A construção de um modelo teórico que associe a gestão da logística integrada aos fundamentos de comércio exterior guia as linhas de argumentos, norteando a coleta e levantamento de dados e constatações empíricas. O objeto de análise é o elo usina-porto, observando as estratégias comerciais e de operações da logística para o mercado internacional da commoditie açúcar.

La gestión Logística Portuaria en la descarga de vehículos importados tipo CBU en el muelle norte período 2015-2020 / Port Logistics management in the unloading of imported vehicles type CBU in the north dock period 2015-2020

El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo comprender la gestión logística portuaria en la descarga de vehículos importados tipo CBU en el muelle norte, período 2015-2020. En relación con la metodología aplicada, se describió un enfoque cualitativo, basada en la Teoría Fundamentada, de corte transversal, en el que se aplicó como instrumento de recopilación de información una guía de entrevista a profundidad con la participación de 20 entrevistados. Entre los resultados obtenidos se evidenció que, la gestión de logística portuaria en la descarga de vehículos importados tipo CBU en el muelle norte representa un componente importante dentro de los procesos que se desarrollan en el puerto, evidenciando que entre los factores que obstaculizan el proceso de descarga se estableció la infraestructura, el personal, la comunicación, la capacitación y basado en las categorías de la matriz presentada se destacan Gestión Logística, Infraestructura, Gestión Operativa, Gestión Administrativa y Comunicación y que se consideran deben optimizarse para agilizar tanto el flujo de tránsito como la supervisión de los vehículos importados tipo CBU, con el fin de otorgar herramientas para la mejora de las fases que intervienen dentro del muelle norte garantizando así la efectividad de los tiempos de espera hasta su despacho. / The objective of this work is to understand port logistics management in the unloading of imported CBU-type vehicles in the north dock, period 2015-2020. In relation to the applied methodology, a qualitative approach was described, based on Grounded Theory, cross-sectional, in which an in-depth interview guide was applied as an information collection instrument with the participation of 20 interviewees. Among the results obtained, it was evidenced that the port logistics management in the unloading of imported CBU-type vehicles in the north dock represents an important component within the processes that are developed in the port, showing that among the factors that hinder the process of download infrastructure, personnel, communication, training were established and based on the categories of the presented matrix, Logistics Management, Infrastructure, Operational Management, Administrative Management and Communication are highlighted and they are considered to be optimized to streamline both the traffic flow such as the supervision of imported CBU-type vehicles, in order to provide tools for the improvement of the phases that intervene within the north dock, thus guaranteeing the effectiveness of the waiting times until their dispatch. / Trabajo de investigación

Identificación y ponderación de las funcionalidades de una TOS (Terminal Operating System) mediante aplicación de método de análisis jerárquico (AHP). Microsimulación de resultados en ambiente real simulado

[ES] Este trabajo tiene como objetivo aumentar el conocimiento sobre las funcionalidades de los sistemas operativos de terminales (TOS) gestionando terminales de cualquier tipo (portuarias, interiores) con el fin de mejorar su desempeño y contribuir a la reducción de esa congestión. 117 funcionalidades han sido agrupadas en 6 clusters principales: Almacén, Operaciones marítimas, Puerta, Master Data, Comunicaciones y ERP Dashboard. Los resultados muestran que el traqueo del timing de los buques, la optimización de espacio, el desarrollo de listas de carga y/o descarga y la optimización de las ubicaciones de los contenedores son las funcionalidades más importantes de una TOS, y no deberían de faltar en ninguna de ellas que se precie para ser un buen cerebro de una terminal. Posteriormente, mediante una simulación en ambiente real, se perseguía el objetivo de verificar si profundizar en esas funcionalidades de una TOS efectivamente producía una mejora en los indicadores clave de desempeño de una terminal. / [CA] Aquest treball té com a objectiu augmentar el coneixement de les funcionalitats de les TOS gestionant terminales de qualsevol tipus (portuaries, interiors) amb la fi de millorar el seu acompliment i contribuir a la reducció d'eixa congestió. 117 funcionalitats han sigut agrupades en 6 clusters principales: Magatzem, Operacions marítimes, Porta, Master Data, Comunicacions i ERP Dashboard. Posteriorment, mitjançant una simulació en ambient reial, es perseguia l'objectiu de verificar si, profunditzant en eixes funcionalitats d'una TOS, efectivament es produïa una millora en el indicadors claus d'acompliment d'una terminal. / [EN] This work aims to improve the knowledge about the functionalities of Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) managing container terminales of sea, river, and dry ports, with the aim of improving their performance and contributing to reducing congestion and GHG emissions to achieve a higher sustainability. One hundred and seven functionalities were grouped into six main clusters: Warehouse, Maritime Operations, Gate, Master Data, Communications, and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Dashboard. The results show that time tracking of vessels, space optimization, development of loading and unloading lists, and optimization of container locations are the most important functionalities of a TOS.
