Caring in Nursing EducationDragich, Bernadette Marie 24 April 2001 (has links)
Narratives are used to explore personal beliefs and assumptions about caring in one's personal and professional life. This dissertation recognizes the process of caring is interpretative and evolves from personal experience. I address issues of caring within the practice of nursing and nursing education from a feminist perspective. I begin with my own personal narrative in which I seek to uncover my own caring essence as a basis for inquiring into issues of caring and feminism in nursing education. Theoretical constructs from educational nursing and feminist literature are explored to develop a personal model of caring within nursing education. Nursing students must be educated within a caring learning environment so they can develop a caring stance with patients. Dialogue within teacher-student interaction is at the center of such an environment. This dialogue encourages authentic presence with students that leads to an intuitive knowing. Nursing students need to learn to let their intuitive sense guide the use of technology. Of course, that means educating their intuitions. Autobiographical vignettes are used to reflect on the experience of a nurse educator as caring guides teaching-learning activities in a nursing curriculum. Caring within clinical teaching encourages reflection and increases self-awareness. Clinical teaching is seen as an opportunity to unite theory and practice. It encourages students to be receptive to patients and places value on contextual experiences. An examination of contextual experience shows that care is relational and encourages connections with others. Care is sustained through relationships that give voice to nursing students and patients. This process of giving voice makes caring more visible to others. This visibility allows nurses to celebrate caring occasions and validates worth of caring in nursing. Caring practices within nursing education help students recognize the power within themselves to institute change. Nurse educators must encourage students to care for themselves. This process will help them stay in touch with what they need as individuals as they provide care to others. / Ph. D.

The Importance of Reflection within the Academic Assignments of Study Abroad ProgramsPlaza, Raymond Vidal 16 August 2016 (has links)
Today, almost 305,000 U.S. college students are taking advantage of study abroad opportunities throughout the world. While study abroad experiences have has been increasing in number and scope, there continue to be questions about the importance and value of study abroad on the students' growth and development. This study highlights a summer study abroad program at Virginia Tech from 2008 – 2012.
Reflection and transformative learning serve as the primary theoretical frameworks for this study. The work of Dewey (1933), Mezirow (1991, 1997), Moon (2004), Whitney and Clayton (2011) and others help to provide additional insight into better understanding reflection and transformative learning.
The methodological framework is a qualitative case study focusing on the student participants from summer 2012 and examines the role of reflection in the academic components of the program and whether or not reflection helped to further enhance the influence and impact of the experience on the students.
I collected data from photo journals, weekly reflection papers and their final exam paper, all of which comprised the academic requirements for this credit-bearing course. The participants consisted of seven female identified students and four male identified students, representing the following academic disciplines: Human Development, Geography, Political Science, Journalism, Studio Art and International Studies.
Through content analysis (Mayan, 2009; Merriam, 1998), I discovered the themes of self-awareness and visibility and presence. These two themes provide a deeper understanding about how the study abroad experience has a distinct influence on the students, as can be evidenced through their academic work. While the two themes help to further reinforce the importance of reflective practice, the study also reveals that reflection can be problematic as well. / Ph. D.

Cinemacraft: Exploring Fidelity Cues in Collaborative Virtual World InteractionsNarayanan, Siddharth 15 February 2018 (has links)
The research presented in this thesis concerns the contribution of virtual human (or avatar) fidelity to social interaction in virtual environments (VEs) and how sensory fusion can improve these interactions. VEs present new possibilities for mediated communication by placing people in a shared 3D context. However, there are technical constraints in creating photo realistic and behaviorally realistic avatars capable of mimicking a person's actions or intentions in real time. At the same time, previous research findings indicate that virtual humans can elicit social responses even with minimal cues, suggesting that full realism may not be essential for effective social interaction. This research explores the impact of avatar behavioral realism on people's experience of interacting with virtual humans by varying the interaction fidelity. This is accomplished through the creation of Cinemacraft, a technology-mediated immersive platform for collaborative human-computer interaction in a virtual 3D world and the incorporation of sensory fusion to improve the fidelity of interactions and realtime collaboration. It investigates interaction techniques within the context of a multiplayer sandbox voxel game engine and proposes how interaction qualities of the shared virtual 3D space can be used to further involve a user as well as simultaneously offer a stimulating experience. The primary hypothesis of the study is that embodied interactions result in a higher degree of presence and co-presence, and that sensory fusion can improve the quality of presence and co-presence. The argument is developed through research justification, followed by a user-study to demonstrate the qualitative results and quantitative metrics. This research comprises of an experiment involving 24 participants. Experiment tasks focus on distinct but interrelated questions as higher levels of interaction fidelity are introduced. The outcome of this research is the generation of an interactive and accessible sensory fusion platform capable of delivering compelling live collaborative performances and empathetic musical storytelling that uses low fidelity avatars to successfully sidestep the 'uncanny valley'. This research contributes to the field of immersive collaborative interaction by making transparent the methodology, instruments and code. Further, it is presented in non-technical terminology making it accessible for developers aspiring to use interactive 3D media to pro-mote further experimentation and conceptual discussions, as well as team members with less technological expertise. / Master of Science / The work presented in this thesis explores social interactions and collaboration between users within the context of an immersive game platform. Improving the quality of these interactions is often challenging in terms of creating relatable virtual representations of the user that can also accurately capture user performances and behavioral intentions in real time. This research focuses on changing modes of performance capture to affect the quality of interactions between users. The immersive game platform, Cinemacraft, uses a Minecraft style game engine to propose how interaction qualities of a shared virtual space can be used to further involve a user as well as simultaneously offer a stimulating experience. The platform can accurately capture the users’ posture, limb movement, facial expressions and lip-synced mouth states and comes with an array of live cinematic production tools. The primary hypothesis of the study is that more natural modes of performance capture would result in a higher quality of interaction. Also, an additional level of intelligence to incorporate voice capture to improve tracking of users’ facial performance would yield the highest quality of interactions.
The argument is developed through research justification, followed by a user-study involving 24 participants, to demonstrate the qualitative results and quantitative metrics. The outcome of this research is the generation of an interactive and accessible immersive game platform capable of delivering compelling live collaborative performances and empathetic musical storytelling. This research contributes to the field of immersive collaborative interaction by making transparent the methodology, instruments and code. Caracterização do corredor ecológico da Mata Atlântica Costeira quanto à ocorrência da onça-pintada (Panthera onca) / Characterization of the ecological corridor in the Coastal Atlantic Forest regarding the occurrence of jaguar (Panthera onca)Maggiorini, Erica Vanessa 02 August 2013 (has links)
Currently, there are 90 areas identified as priority for the survival of the jaguar. The Atlantic Forest, one of the five most threatened hotspots in the world, is one of these high priority areas for the conservation of this species. Due to a lack of basic information on the jaguar in this biome, this study aimed to characterize the occurrence of the species in the Coastal Atlantic Forest region, and indicate suitable areas for its occurrence. We carried out interviews with local residents where jaguars have been sighted. We made a correlation analysis of these data with environmental variables (altitude, declivity, distance to roads, population density, density of drainage system, percentage of forest, distance to urban areas and presence of conservation units) to help identify the important areas for the conservation of the species. Moreover, we generated occupancy models (OM) and species distribution models (SDM) to identify suitable areas for the occurrence of jaguars in the study site. From May 2010 to June 2011, we carried out five interviews in each of 111 quadrants of 90 km2, totaling 577 interviews in 181 days. The variables that were significant for jaguar occurrence in the study site were: distance to urban areas, percentage of forest and altitude. The occupancy models show that 93% of the total area was used by jaguars and detectability corresponded to approximately 30%. Distance to urban areas was the main co-variable. The species distribution models considered refined reports of direct sighting of jaguars and footprints (N = 300) and refined reports of direct sighting (N = 56). The two selected models were satisfactory (AUC = 0.979 ± 0.0021 and 0.9851 ± 0.0032), with acceptable omission error (0.20 and 0.24) and significant (p = 0). Together, these models allowed the characterization of the Coastal Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo as a suitable environment for the jaguar. Interviews are a possible method to register the ocurrence of the jaguar and use it in occupancy and distribution modeling of the species, allowing the identification of important areas for the its conservation in the study area. Areas that deserve special attention are: the Caraguatatuba, São Sebastião and Picinguaba core areas of the PESM, the PN da Serra da Bocaina, PECB, PEI, PETAR, PERT, EE Juréia-Itatins EE de Guaraqueçaba and the area between Juquiá (SP) and Tapiraí (SP). The region of the Cubatão core area of the PESM that is unsuitable for jaguar occurrence needs urgent actions to minimize further antropic impacts thus keeping this area from becoming a barrier to the dispersal of the jaguar within the biome.

Social presence impacting cognitive learning of adults in distanced education (DE)Lane, Carol-Ann 09 May 2011 (has links)
This study examines evidence that supports the assertion of social presence (sp) theory impacting the community of inquiry for cognitive learning in distance education (DE). This study tested the validity of social presence assertions with respect to developing deep meaningful learning (dml) from the perspective of students engaged in distance education Master’s studies. This study employed a convenient sample of students enrolled at the graduate level; due to limited participation generalizations cannot be made to any population. The mixed method study involved both a quantitative online survey with 36 questions and qualitative follow-up telephone interviews conducted with 4 participants. A target population of 290 participants was obtained resulting in 25 returned surveys. Findings concluded no significant relationship exists between social presence and deep meaningful learning, cognitive learning and building a community of inquiry for deep meaningful learning. Findings strongly suggest social presence acts as a hindrance to deep meaningful learning. The results of the study justify further investigation and future studies are strongly recommended. / 2011-06

This thesis presents Presence Plus (PPLus), a model for identifying indicators of social presence in text-based interactions made by students in educational forums and chats. The degree of social presence (SP) can be an indicator of how individuals interact among themselves and with the learning environment, and is considered by the literature to be relevant for the development of relationships and the strengthening of the sense of belonging in the group. This study is based on Pragmatics, an area of Linguistics that emphasizes the importance of the context in communicative events and the dialogic dynamics among speakers. Considering that mapping students’ interactions, as well as detecting and evaluating their degree of SP, may be a complex and time-consuming task in distance learning tutoring, a software was developed to do the automatic processing of posts, aiming at making it a possible functionality in virtual learning environments (VLEs). Despite the few conflicting results, mostly related to textual syntactic relations, data from processing tests using lexicometrics were satisfactorily similar to those obtained by manual analysis. The PPlus model and the SP scale were also tested in a different course in the Moodle platform. Results from this experiment presented equally positive data. Feedback from the questionnaire answered by teachers and tutors working in distance learning courses support the proposal of a tool that may facilitate their assessment of affective states, involvement and text-based interaction dents within the environment.

Medierade Verkligheter : Verklighetsuppfattningen i Virtual RealityRundquist, Björn, Joensen, Johan January 2016 (has links)
Men varför känns just den här upplevelsen verklig? / Central to Virtual Reality is the experience of the digital as the real. But from where does this experience stem? By investigating several different perspectives on Virtual Reality, reality and deconstructions of concepts in previous Virtual Reality-science we’ve looked into the creation of this sensation of reality in Virtual Reality-games. Through a practical project, focusing on different types of scenes and control schemes, we then sought to create a discussion focusing on the practical application of the differing theories.
