The logistics collaboration requirements of a South African branded foods and beverages group with its retail customers

M.Com. (Business Management) / In the field of supply chain, rival organisations compete on the basis of routes to market. The organisation that has the most cost competitive route to market is able to gain dominance and ultimately increase its profitability. Currently Clover is faced with the challenge where its retail customers want to take ownership of the delivery of perishable goods from the manufactures to their retail stores. Such a move would result in considerable loss of revenue to Clover. To retain this business Clover needs to prove to the retail customers that it has the most cost competitive routes to market and that it can deliver to market in the most economical and efficient manner that will benefit both Clover and its retail customers. The availability of appropriate information plays a key role in any activity along the supply chain. This research will focus on Point-of-Sale (POS) data, and how it can strengthen strategic collaborations between Clover and its retail customers in order to achieve cost competitive routes to markets. The research explores the supply chain strategies that can be utilised by the branded food and beverages group to collaborate with its retail customers. The impact of these supply chain strategies on routes to market is established and investigated. The role of information systems, mainly POS data, is highlighted to indicate how it can assist in attaining cost competitive routes to market. A qualitative research approach was adopted in order to solve the research problem with interviews being used as the primary data collection instrument. The data collected through the interviews was coded and analysed according to the themes, time, distance, volume and weight. The research analysed how these identified key themes impact on the cost competitive routes to markets. The research recommendation on how to attain cost competitive routes to market include, strategic collaboration with retailers along distribution channels, where feasible introduction of leaner and agile supply chains,

本論文共一冊,七萬餘言,分為六章四十節,第一章緒論,第二章研究方法與系統架 構,第三章產品結構管理子系統,第四章存貨控制子系統,第五章物料需支計劃子系 統,第六章系統實施與結論。 自Orlicky 提出MRP 的觀念以來,有許多套系統在大型電腦上發展出來,且被實施成 功,但其費用太過高昂,近年來,個人電腦功能的增強,使在個人電腦上發展MRP 成 為可能,但國內目前卻缺乏一套這樣的系統,因此本論文乃嘗試發展國內第一套個人 電腦上的中文式MRP 系統,不但適合國內之生產型態與環境,以解決佔國內企業總數 百分之九十八的中小企業所面對的物料管理和生產管理難題,且以個案研究的方式, 使系統的建立能夠真正被應用,使理論和實務能夠連接,以完成系統的整合。

<b>Development of Innovative Hardwood Products</b>

<p dir="ltr">In response to the growing significance of wood as a sustainable resource and the challenges within the wood products industry, there is a pressing need for innovation and collaboration across sectors. This study underscores the importance of mapping the wood products industry to gain a comprehensive understanding of material flows, which is essential for educational and research endeavors. The findings aim to uncover new economic opportunities and advocate for sustainable resource management. To address the complexities of the wood products industry, we developed a Generic Map, including a version tailored for the U.S. hardwood sector. Moreover, Dive-in Chain Maps were introduced to elaborate on the main production chains: Sawmill (I), Veneer Mill (II), Reconstituted Wood Manufacturing (III), and Pulp and Paper Mill (IV).</p><p dir="ltr">The study suggests four strategies to augment the value of hardwood through production, design, material modification, and by-products management. We showcased some strategies through two case studies.</p><p dir="ltr">The first focuses on Cross-laminated Timber (CLT), demonstrating value addition to hardwood. We conducted a literature review on the availability of raw materials in the US region and evaluated their performance across various stages of laboratory testing. This was followed by evaluating the feasibility and environmental effects of utilizing yellow poplar for CLT production. Additionally, we compared the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) outcomes of yellow poplar CLT with those of traditional softwood CLT. This comparison aims to provide further insights for developing future by-product management or end-of-life strategies.</p><p dir="ltr">The second case study examines thermal modification, proposing an innovative method for efficient thermal treatment and employing an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to analyze the correlation between temperature, duration, and color change. We also compared the physical and mechanical properties of surface thermally treated samples to those of traditionally treated ones, discussing how different thermal treatments affect material properties.</p><p dir="ltr">Our findings illuminate the path for effective material flow and utilization, unveiling avenues for innovation and the creation of high-value products. Furthermore, the study provides strategies for waste minimization and informed end-of-life decision-making, thereby enhancing circularity and sustainability in the wood products industry.</p>
